The effect of particle size on the edge notched disk (END) using particle flow code in three dimension

  • In this study, the effect of particle size on the cracks propagation and coalescence or cracking pattern of the edge notched disc specimens are investigated. Firstly, calibration of PFC3D was performed using Brazilian experimental test output. Then micro parameters were used to build edge notched disc specimen. The horizontal wall of the assembly is let to move downward with a standard low speed of 0.016 m/s. The numerical results show that the tensile cracks are dominant failure pattern for the modeled discs. These tensile cracks initiate from the pre-existing notch tip and propagate parallel to the loading direction then interact with the upper boundary of the modeled specimen. As the size of the balls (ball diameter) decrease the number of tensile cracks increase. The tensile fracture toughness of the samples also decreases as the particle size increases. Understanding the crack propagation and crack coalescence phenomena in brittle materials such as concretes and rocks is of paramount importance in the stability analyses for engineering structures such as rock slopes, underground structures and tunneling.

  • In the microstereolithography which can make 3-D microstructures, curing depth is different according to exposure energy. Curing depth has to be controlled to fabricate complex 3-D microstructures with overhang shape. It becomes increases when the exposure energy increases. And photocurable resin is cured when the exposure energy is bigger than critical energy. So optimal exposure energy has to be found to fabricate overhang structures without being gel. To make thinner layer, UV absorber is used and exposure pattern is changed. In this paper, we find curing characteristics according to exposure energy, and fabricate microstructures with overhang shape.

  • In this paper, we propose a modeling method for the flip-flops and test generation algorithms to detect the faults in the sequential circuits using VHDL in the high-level design environment. RS, JK, D and T flip-flops are modeled using data flow types. The sequence of micro-operation which is the basic structure of a chip-level leads to a control point where varnishing occurs to one of two micro- operation sequence. In order to model the fault of one micro-operation(FMOP) that perturb another micro-operation effectively, the concept of goal trees and some heuristic rules are used. Given a faulty FMOP or fault of control point (FCON), a test pattern is generated by fault sensitization, path sensitization and determination of the imput combinations that will justify the path sensitization. The fault models are restricted to the data flow model in the ARCHITECTURE statement of VHDL. The proposed algorithm is implemented in the C language and its efficiency is confirmed by some examples.

  • In this paper, we propose a new near-field reader antenna for 900 MHz RFID. The proposed antenna consists the micro-strip antenna with the periodic structure. The overall dimension of the antenna is $313mm{\times}152mm{\times}14mm$. The antenna has the uniform E-field distribution in near field region and the heart-shaped radiation beam pattern (Peak gain=-2 dBi). The transmitted power range is from 17 dBm to 23 dBm. We focus on minimizing the detected error by suppressing the reflected power from the metal, which is attached to the surface by tag, and by reducing the transmitted power from tag.

A Study on the MDAS-DR Antenna for Shaping Flat-Topped Radiation Pattern (구형 빔 패턴 형성을 위한 MDAS-DR 안테나에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, a new MDAS-DR antenna structure designed to efficiently shape a flat-topped radiation pattern is proposed. The antenna structure is composed of a stacked micro-strip patch exciter and a multi-layered disk array structure(MDAS) surrounded by a dielectric ring. The MDAS, which was supplied by a stacked microstrip patch exciter with radiating power, can form a flat-topped radiation pattern in a far field by a mutual interaction with the surrounding dielectric ring. Therefore, the design parameters of the dielectric ring and the MDAS structure are important design parameters for shaping a flat-topped radiation pattern. The proposed antenna used twelve multi-layered disk array elements and a Teflon material with a dielectric constant of 2.05. An antenna operated at 10 GHz$(9.6\sim10.4\;GHz)$ was designed in order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed antenna structure. The commercial simulator of CST Microwave $Studio^{TM}$, which was adapted to a 3-D antenna structure analysis, was used for the simulation. The antenna breadboard was also fabricated and its electrical performance was measured in an anechoic antenna chamber. The measured results of the antenna breadboard with a flat-topped radiation pattern were found to be in good agreement with the simulated one. The MDAS-DR antenna gain measured at 10 GHz was 11.18 dBi, and the MDAS-DR antenna was capable of shaping a good flat-topped radiation pattern with a beam-width of about $40^{\circ}$, at least within a fractional bandwidth of 8.0 %.

  • $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$eutectic fibers were grown by micro-pulling down technique and investigated their microstructure as a function of solidification rate. $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$eutectic fibers 0.2~2 mm in diameter and 500 mm in length have been grown with a pulling rate of 0.1~15 mm/min. The eutectic microstructures changed as a function of fulling rate from rod-shaped to cellular shape containing some thin lamellar pattern via uniform lamellar structure. Typical lamellar thickness decreased from about 380 nm to 110 nm as the pulling rate increased from 1 mm/min to 15 mm/min. The interlamellar spacing fitted with the inverse-square-root dependence on pulling rate according to $\lambda$= $1{\times}v^{-1/2}$, where $\lambda$ has the dimension in $\mu\textrm{m}$ and v is $\mu\textrm{m}$/s. Hardness value reached 13.1 GPa at 15 mm/min of pulling rate and tensile strength 900 MPa at 10 mm/min were also increased as the interlamellar spacing decreased.

A Study on Selection Capability and Investment Efficiency of Korean Venture Capitals (한국 벤처캐피탈의 선별력에 대한 분석)

  • This paper examines the investment efficiency of Korean venture capitals during 1987~2006 (20 years), focusing on their selection capability. Despite the Korean government's efforts, venture capital industry has evolved in a slow speed. Since the genesis of venture paradigm in Korea at 1997, venture capital industry as a macro unit has been fully discussed in Korean contexts. But venture capital's activities at micro level regarding each investment's outcome have not been examined. This study attempts to fill the voids of micro knowledge about each investment success rates by venture capitals. We analyzed venture investment records in 4,791 venture startups and their success rates. Their investment criteria were relevant to high potential industries and amount of tangible assets. But their criteria were not relevant to R&D intensity and financial growth of venture firms, which may indicate low level of maturity about Korean venture capital industry. We found that Korean venture capital's investment pattern may be originated from the low return of investment, so that efficiency of IPO markets is a prerequisite for the upgrade of venture capitals' efficiency. Some policy implications are discussed.

  • Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) - in general a complex pattern of micro- and nano-scale structures - can modulate and transform light in a predetermined way. Their importance is being increased nowadays because they can be designed to handle a number of simultaneous tasks. In view point of machining DOEs, it is a big challenge to fabricate micro- and nano-scale structures on a free-form surfaces. In this paper, the state-of-the-art of the ultra-precision machine tools is reviewed. Also some technical issues which determine the machine tool accuracy are discussed.

  • Three Dimensional measuring system using optical interference is greatly needed for semiconductor surface or optical surface. The application of this system are : MEMS product, semiconductor surfaces, optical components, precise machined surface, etc. In this paper, Interferometry based measurement system is introduced, which is nondestructive and noncontact inspection system. This system have relatively many advantage, compared with AFM/STM, SEM, Stylus, etc. The developed system can measure the surface topography with high precision and resolution, and with few seconds. And the associated software algorithm is also developed for the ultra precision 3D measuring surface. Various samples that is measured using this system is showed in the latter of this paper.

Design and Fabrication of UWB Antenna Using the SRR for WLAN Band Rejection (SRR을 이용한 WLAN 대역 저지용 UWB 안테나의 설계 및 제작)

  • In this paper, a novel UWB(Ultra Wide-band) antenna with suppressed band of IEEE 802.11a($5.15{\sim}5.825\;GHz$) WLAN was designed and fabricated by using SRR(Split Ring Resonator) with band rejection property. MWS(Micro-wave Studio) of CST company was utilized in the design stage. The antenna was fabricated on a substrate, Rogers 4003, with the thickness of 0.8 mm and relative permittivity of 3.38. The measured result shows that the proposed antenna has a good return loss below -10 dB and group delay below 1nsec over UWB communication band($3.1{\sim}10.6\;GHz$) except WLAN band. It also shows the omni-directional radiation pattern.
