  • While the wheel flat is an asymmetrical phenomenon in the railway, majority of researches have used two-dimensional models in the investigation of the effect of wheel flat on the wheel rail forces. This is due to the considerably low computational costs of two dimensional (2D) models although their reliability is questionable. This leaves us with the question of "what is the optimum modeling technique?". It is addressed in this research. For this purpose, two and three dimensional numerical models of railway vehicle/track interaction were developed. The three dimensional (3D) model was validated by comparisons of its results with those obtained from a comprehensive field tests carried out in this research and then, the results obtained from the 2D and 3D models were compared. The results obtained indicate that there are considerable differences between wheel/rail forces obtained from the 2D and 3D models in the conditions of medium to large wheel-flats. On the other hand, it was shown that the results of the 2D models are reliable for particular ranges of vehicle speed, railway track stiffness and wheel-fats lengths and depths. The results were used to draw a diagram, which presents the optimum modeling technique, compromising between the costs and accuracy of the obtained results.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the resting postures of the fingers and wrist based on the biomechanical model in term of hand posture (neutral, pronation, and supination) and gender (male and female). The finger and wrist joint angles were measured with VICON motion system. The EMG system was used to examine the muscle activity in the resting condition. The participants consisted of twenty male and twenty female students. The angles of the fingers and wrist were analyzed by means of the coordinate system associated with the International Society of Biomechanics. Hand posture was significant for all the joints. The finger and wrist joint flexed in supination more than in neutral and pronation. The hand posture and gender were not significant for the results of muscle activity, but it had larger muscle activities in supination more than in neutral and pronation.

  • The nonlinear behaviors of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) frame structure are investigated by numerical simulation method with 3-D finite fiber elements. The dynamic characteristics and the seismic performance of the RAC frame structure are analyzed and validated with the shaking table test results. Specifically, the natural frequency and the typical responses (e.g., storey deformation, capacity curve, etc.) from Model 1 (exclusion of strain rate effect) and Model 2 (inclusion of strain rate effect) are analyzed and compared. It is revealed that Model 2 is more likely to provide a better match between the numerical simulation and the shaking table test as key attributes of seismic behaviors of the frame structure are captured by this model. For the purpose to examine how seismic behaviors of the RAC frame structure vary under different strain rates in a real seismic situation, a numerical simulation is performed by varying the strain rate. The storey displacement response and the base shear for the RAC frame structure under different strain rates are investigated and analyzed. It is implied that the structural behavior of the RAC frame structure is significantly influenced by the strain rate effect. On one hand, the storey displacements vary slightly in the trend of decreasing with the increasing strain rate. On the other hand, the base shear of the RAC frame structure under dynamic loading conditions increases with gradually increasing amplitude of the strain rate.

  • This work has been directed at studying and developing a prototype Computer Aided Design(CAD) tool to be used for planning tendon paths in hand reconstructive surgery. The application of CAD to rehabilitative surgery of the hand is a new field of endeavor. There are currently no existing systems designed to assist the orthopedic surgeon in planning these complex peocedures. Additionally, orthopedic surgeons are not trained in mechanics, kinematics, math modeling, or the use of computers. It was also our intent to study the mechanisms and the efficacy of the application of CAD techniques to this important aspect of hand surgery. The following advances are reported here: Interactive 3D tendon path definition tools., Software to calculate tendon excursion from an arbitrary tendon path crossing any number of joints., A model to interactively compute and display the foirces in muscle and tendon., A workstation environment to help surgeons evaluate the consequences of a simulated tendon transfer operation when a tendon is lengthened, rerouted, or reattached in a mew location., It also has been one of the primary concerns in this work that an interactive graphical surgical workstation must present a natural, user-friendly environment to the orthopedic durgeon user. The surgical workstation must ultimately aid the surgeon in helping his patient or in doing his work more efficiently or more reliably.

  • Multiview stereo (MVS) 3D reconstruction of a scene from images is a fundamental computer vision problem that has been thoroughly researched in recent times. Traditionally, MVS approaches create dense correspondences by constructing regularizations and hand-crafted similarity metrics. Although these techniques have achieved excellent results in the best Lambertian conditions, traditional MVS algorithms still contain a lot of artifacts. Therefore, in this study, we suggest using a transformer network to accelerate the MVS reconstruction. The network is based on a transformer model and can extract dense features with 3D consistency and global context, which are necessary to provide accurate matching for MVS.

  • A 3D ultrasonic anemometer measures the direction and velocity of wind in a 3D space. The 2D ultrasonic anemometers developed by different manufacturers do not differ significantly in terms of their form or structure. The 3D ultrasonic anemometers, on the other hand, have more diverse forms than their 2D counterparts depending on the measurement algorithms and methods. Designing and reviewing the structure at the initial stage and defining its performance objectives are time-consuming processes. The process can be made cost-effective and time-saving if the validity is tested by model design and structural interpretation, and the structure is designed to withstand high wind velocities. This study presents the results of a 3D ultrasonic anemometer on real sample data by using a 3D modeling program, CATIA, for ultrasonic anemometer modeling.

  • Objective : The aim of this study was to explore the immunity in rats transplanted with adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) and acellular nerve (ACN) for repairing sciatic nerve defects. Methods : ADSCs were isolated from the adipose tissues of Wistar rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were used to establish a sciatic nerve defect model and then divided into four groups, according to the following methods : Group A, allogenic nerve graft; Group B, allograft with ACN; Group C, allograft ADSCs+ACN, and Group D, nerve autograft. Results : At the day before transplantation and 3, 7, 14, and 28 days after transplantation, orbital venous blood of the Sprague-Dawley rats in each group was collected to detect the proportion of $CD3^+$, $CD4^+$, and $CD8^+$ subsets using flow cytometry and to determine the serum concentration of interleukin-2 (IL-2), tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}$ ($TNF-{\alpha}$) and $interferon-{\gamma}$ ($IFN-{\gamma}$) using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). At each postoperative time point, the proportion of $CD3^+$, $CD4^+$, and $CD8^+$ subsets and the serum concentration of IL-2, $TNF-{\alpha}$, and $IFN-{\gamma}$ in group C were all near to those in group B and group D, in which no statistically significant difference was observed. As compared with group A, the proportion of $CD3^+$, $CD4^+$, and $CD8^+$ subsets and the serum concentration of IL-2, $TNF-{\alpha}$, and $IFN-{\gamma}$ were significantly reduced in group C (p<0.05). Conclusion : The artificial nerve established with ADSCs and ACN has no obvious allograft rejection for repairing rat nerve defects.

  • In this paper we develop an approximation formalism on the queue length distribution for general queueing models. Our formalism is based on two steps of approximation; the first step is to find a lower bound on the exact formula, and subsequently the Chernoff upper bound technique is applied to this lower bound. We demonstrate that for the M/M/1 model our formula is equivalent to the exact solution. For the D/M/1 queue, we find an extremely tight lower bound below the exact formula. On the other hand, our approach shows a tight upper bound on the exact distribution for both the ND/D/1 and M/D/1 queues. We also consider the $M+{\Sigma}N_jD/D/1$ queue and compare our formula with other formalisms for the $M+{\Sigma}N_jD/D/1$ and M+D/D/1 queues.
