  • Although the aircraft industry was the first to use fibre composites, now they are increasingly used in a range of structural applications such as flooring, decking, platforms and roofs. Interlayer delamination is a major failure mode which threatens the reliability of composite structures. Delamination can grow in size under increasing loads with time and hence leads to severe loss of structural integrity and stiffness reduction. Delamination reduces the natural frequency and as a consequence may result in resonance. Hence, the study of the effects of delamination on the free vibration behaviour of multilayer composite structures is imperative. The focus of this paper is to develop a 3D FE model and investigate the free vibration behaviour of fibre composite multilayer sandwich panels with interlayer delaminations. A series of parametric studies are conducted to assess the influence of various parameters of concern, using a commercially available finite element package. Additionally, selected points in the delaminated region are connected appropriately to simulate bolting as a remedial measure to fasten the delamination region in the aim of reducing the effects of delamination. First order shear deformation theory based plate elements have been used to model each sandwich layer. The findings suggest that the delamination size and the end fixity of the plate are the most important factors responsible for stiffness reduction due to delamination damage in composite laminates. It is also revealed that bolting the delaminated region can significantly reduce the natural frequency variation due to delamination thereby improving the dynamic performance.

  • The Paektu-san mountains are geographically situated in the Korea strait to the north of the main peninsula, coordinated between the longitudes of W(127$^{\circ}$15'~128$^{\circ}$00')and E(128$^{\circ}$15'~129$^{\circ}$00'), and between the latitudes of S(41$^{\circ}$15'~42$^{\circ}$00') and N(42$^{\circ}$10'~42$^{\circ}$40'). The volcanic group of the Paektu-san mountains can be devided into 2 main kinds of volcanos by the method investigation, The ashes are mainly made of tremolite, trachte, basalt and pumice, or, a little quartz, labradorite and volcanic glass. These sorts, ratios and forms of the rocks are respectively similar. The Haeven lake is surrounded by 19 peaks. The central volcanic cone is a secant cone in shape, with an altitude of the 1800m to 2749,2m (Chang-kun-bong), an average diameter of 10km, and a shape of an ellipse seen high from the plane. They say there were several eruptions in 1668, 1700 and 1702 A. D. The crystal structure of the rock sample collected at the cave of Mt. Paektu-san is monoclinic. The quantitative analysis of the rock samples in the cave is done by using XRF this time. The chemical compositions by XRF fundamamental parameter analysis is : SiO$_2$: 50.72Wt%, TiO = 2.422Wt%, $Al_2$O$_3$= 17.65Wt%, Fe$_2$O$_3$= 9.371Wt%, CaO = 8.711Wt%, MgO = 4.l19Wt%, MnO = 0.l15Wt%, $K_2$O = 1.369Wt%, Na$_2$O : 3.028Wt% and P$_2$O$_{5}$ = 0.365Wt%. The K-Ar age of the rock sample is also determined to be 0.16Ma. This paper describes some problems experienced in dating young volcanic rocks, and then discusses chemical compositions, X-ray fluorescence analyses and the age of the formation of a lava tunnel such as in Mt. • An eigenvalue design sensitivity formulation of a general nonsymmetric-matrix rotor-bearing system is devised. using the DDM (direct differential method). Then, investigations on the design sensitivities of critical speeds are carried out for an APU turbogenerator with a spline shaft connection. Results show that the dependence of the rate of change of the critical speed on the stiffness changes of bearing models of spline shaft connection points is negligible, and thereby their modeling uncertainty does not present any problem. And the passing critical speeds up to the 4th critical speed are not sensitive to the design stiffness coefficients of four main bearings. Further, the dependence of the rate of change of the critical speed on the shaft-element length changes shows quantitatively that the spline shaft has some limited influence on the 4th critical speed but no influence on the 1st to 3rd critical speeds. With no adverse effect from the spline shaft, the APU system achieves a critical speed separation margin of more than 40% at a rated speed of 60,000 rpm.

  • Mechanical properties and microstructures of medium carbon high manganese steels were investigated in terms of alloying elements such as Mn, C contents, and heat treatment condition. Austenite volume fraction was increased with increasing Mn content, leading to hardness decrease in the range of Mn content of above 10% after quenching and tempering. Such results are also supported by microstructural analysis and X-ray diffraction in that the increase in mangaese content results in the increase in austenite fraction. Studies on tempering condition indicated that not only hardness and tensile strength but also charpy impact values were reduced as tempering temperature were raised in the range of $250^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. It was also observed that fracture mode was changed from dimple to intergranular fracture. Such results are thought to be due to very fine carbide precipitation or impurity segreagation at grain boundaries as tempering temperature goes up. Heat treatment of Fe-5Mn-2Si-1Al-0.4C can be optimized by austenitizing at $850^{\circ}C$, air cooling and tempering at $250^{\circ}C$, resulting in 1950 MPa in Tensile strength, 17% in elongation and 23.3 $J/cm^2$ in charpy impact energy with high work hardening characteristics.

  • A GFRP based composite blade was developed for a 750kW wind energy conversion system of type class I. The blade sectional geometry was designed to have a general shell-spar structure. The load cases specified in the IEC61400-1 international specification were considered. For withstanding all relevant extreme loads, the structural analysis for the complete blade was performed using a commercial FEM code. The static load carrying capacity, buckling stability, blade tip deflection and natural frequencies at various rotational speeds were evaluated to satisfy the strength requirements in accordance with the IEC61400-1 and GL Regulations. For designing a lightweight blade, the thickness and the lay-up pattern of the skin-foam sandwich structures were optimized iteratively using the DOT program T-bolts were used for joining the blade root and the hub, which were modeled using a 3D FE volume model. In order to confirm the safety of the root connection, the static stresses of the thick root laminate and the steel. bolts were predicted by taking account of the bolt pretension and the root bending moments. The calculated stresses were compared with the material strengths.

  • This paper compiles solutions of plastic $\eta$ factors and crack tip stress triaxialites for standard and nonstandard fracture toughness testing specimens, via detailed three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) analyses. Fracture toughness testing specimens include a middle cracked tension (M(T)) specimen, SE(B), single-edge cracked bar in tension (SE(T)) and C(T) specimen. The ligament-to-thickness ratio of the specimen is systematically varied. It is found that the use of the CMOD overall provides more robust experimental J estimation than that of the LLD, for all cases considered in the present work. Moreover, the J estimation based on the load-CMOD record is shown to be insensitive to the specimen thickness, and thus can be used for testing specimen with any thickness. The effects of in-plane and out-of-plane constraint on the crack tip stress triaxiality are also quantified, so that when experimental J value is estimated according to the procedure recommended in this paper, the corresponding crack tip stress triaxiality can be estimated. Moreover, it is found that the out-of-plane constraint effect is related to the in-plane constraint effect.

  • In this research, a representative volume element (RVE)-based FE Model is presented to estimate the mechanical properties of additively manufactured continuous fiber-reinforced composites with different fiber orientations. To construct the model, an ABAQUS Python script has been implemented to produce matrix and fiber in the desired orientations at the RVE. A script has also been developed to apply the periodic boundary conditions to the RVE. Experimental tests were conducted to validate the numerical models. Tensile specimens with the fiber directions aligned in the 0, 45, and 90 degrees to the loading direction were manufactured using a continuous fiber 3D printer and tensile tests were performed in the three directions. Tensile tests were also simulated using the RVE models. The predicted Young's moduli compared well with the measurements: the Young's modulus prediction accuracy values were 83.73, 97.70, and 92.92 percent for the specimens in the 0, 45, and 90 degrees, respectively. The proposed method with periodic boundary conditions precisely evaluated the elastic properties of additively manufactured continuous fiber-reinforced composites with complex microstructures.

  • The reinforced concrete (RC) structures might need strengthening or upgradation due to adverse environmental conditions, design defects, modification requirements, and to prolong the expected lifespan. The RC beams have been efficiently strengthened using the near surface mounted (NSM) approach over the externally bonded reinforcing (EBR) system. In this study, the performance of RC beam elements strengthened with NSM-steel rebars was investigated using an experimental program and nonlinear finite element modeling (FEM). Nine medium-sized, rectangular cross-section RC beams total in number made up for the experimental evaluation. The beams strengthened with varying percentages of NSM reinforcement, and the number of grooves was assessed in four-point bending experiments up to failure. Based on the experimental evaluation, the load-displacement response, crack features, and failure modes of the strengthened beams were recorded and considered. According to the experimental findings, NSM steel greatly improved the flexural strength (up to about 84%) and stiffness of RC beams. The flexural response of the tested beams was simulated using a 3D non-linear finite element (FE) model. The findings of the experiments and the numerical analysis showed good agreement. The effect of the NSM groove and reinforcement on the structural response was then assessed parametrically.

  • Fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) have a proven strength enhancement capability when installed into Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams. The brittle failure of traditional FRP strengthening systems has attracted researchers to develop novel materials with improved strength and ductility properties. One such material is that known as polyethylene terephthalate (PET). This study presents a numerical investigation of the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams externally strengthened with PET-FRP systems. This material is distinguished by its large rupture strain, leading to an improvement in the ductility of the strengthened structural members compared to conventional FRPs. A three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) model is developed in this study to predict the load-deflection response of a series of experimentally tested beams published in the literature. The numerical model incorporates constitutive material laws and bond-slip behavior between concrete and the strengthening system. Moreover, the validated model was applied in a parametric study to inspect the effect of concrete compressive strength, PET-FRP sheet length, and reinforcing steel bar diameter on the overall performance of concrete beams externally strengthened with PET-FRP.

  • In the steel industry, there is a need to produce large forged parts for the automobile industries, the flight and shipping industries ad military industries. In the steel-industry application, a cogging technique for cast ingots is required, because the major parts are needed as one large body in order to obtain higher quality. Therefore, cogging process is the primary step in manufacturing of practically large open-die forging. In the cogging process, internal voids have to be eliminated as defects, The present work is concerned with the elimination of the internal voids in large ingots so as obtain sound products. In this study, hot compression tests were carried out to obtain the flow stress of cast microstructure at different temperature and strain rates. The FEM analysis are performed to investigate the overlap defect of cast ingots during cogging stage. The measure flow stress data were used to simulate the cogging process of cast ingot using the practical material properties. Also the analysis of void closure are performed by using the $DEFORM^{TM}$-3D. The calculated results of void closure behavior are compared with the measured results before and after cogging, which are scanned by the X-ray scanner. From this result, the criteria for deformation amounts effect on the void closure can be investigated by the comparison of practical experiment and numerical analysis.
