  • The present numerical study is aimed to investigate time-dependent characteristics of a two-dimensional lid-driven square cavity flow of three high Reynolds numbers, $7.5{\times}10^3$, $10^4$ and $3{\times}10^4$. A conservative convection term on irregular grids was adopted by renewing the MAC type difference schemes on regular grids. Relaxation of velocity and pressure is implemented by SOLA algorithm. In case of $Re=7.5{\times}10^3$, flow behavior converges to steady state after a transient period. But for $Re=10^4$, periodic unsteady sinusoidal fluctuation of local velocity and kinetic energy is found and continuous movements of small eddies in the secondary flow regions are also discovered. Random generation of eddies and their active migrating behavior are detected for $Re=3{\times}10^4$, resulting in complete unsteady and non-linear flow characteristics. And, an organized structure similar to a Moffat vortex is also observed from the time-mean flow patterns. Furthermore, a typoon-like vortex(TLV) appears intemittently and rotates along the separation regions and boundary layers.

  • As information technology fusion is accelerated, the researches to improve the quality and productivity of crops inside a plant factory actively progress. Advanced growth environment management technology that can provide thermal environment and air flow suited to the growth of crops and considering the characteristics inside a facility is necessary to maximize productivity inside a plant factory. Currently running plant factories are designed to rely on experience or personal judgment; hence, design and operation technology specific to plant factories are not established, inherently producing problems such as uneven crop production due to the deviation of temperature and air flow and additional increases in energy consumption after prolonged cultivation. The optimization process has to be set up in advance for the arrangement of air flow devices and operation technology using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) during the design stage of a facility for plant factories to resolve the problems. In this study, the optimum arrangement and air flow of air circulation fans were investigated to save energy while minimizing temperature deviation at each point inside a plant factory using CFD. The condition for simulation was categorized into a total of 12 types according to installation location, quantity, and air flow changes in air circulation fans. Also, the variables of boundary conditions for simulation were set in the same level. The analysis results for each case showed that an average temperature of 296.33K matching with a set temperature and average air flow velocity of 0.51m/s suiting plant growth were well-maintained under Case 4 condition wherein two sets of air circulation fans were installed at the upper part of plant cultivation beds. Further, control of air circulation fan set under Case D yielded the most excellent results from Case D-3 conditions wherein air velocity at the outlet was adjusted to 2.9m/s.

  • To address the increase of weather hazards and the emergence of new types of such hazards, an optimization technique for three-dimensional (3D) representation of meteorological facts and atmospheric information was examined in this study as a novel method for weather analysis. The proposed system is termed as "meteorological and air quality information visualization engine" (MAIVE), and it can support several file formats and can implement high-resolution 3D terrain by employing a 30 m resolution digital elevation model. In this study, latest 3D representation techniques such as wind vector fields, contour maps, stream vector, stream line flow along the wind field and 3D volume rendering were applied. Implementation of the examples demonstrates that the results of numerical modeling are well reflected, and new representation techniques can facilitate the observation of meteorological factors and atmospheric information from different perspectives.

  • This study was conducted to suggest the measurement procedure and to build up national greenhouse gas inventory database of animal agricultural sector by assessing methane and nitrous oxide emissions according to IPCC guidelines for national greenhouse gas inventory report in order to correspond to the Climate Change Convention. Ten house-made steady-state Half dome floating chambers were used to collect air samples emitted from slurry stored in the pit under the slat. Those chambers were spread out in order that air samples might represent the whole area of slurry under the slat. Fresh air was pumped into the chambers by $5{\sim}9{\ell}/min$ and air inside the chambers was sampled by $1{\ell}/min$. Surplus air by the higher flow rate of fresh air than sampling flow rate was passed through a hole on the top of chambers. Nitrous oxide fluxes measured from 10 locations would be negligible as concentrations between background air and sampled air from the chambers were within the error range. However, mean $CH_4$ fluxes were $0.15{\sim}1.02mg/m^2{\cdot}s$. The application of continuous greenhouse gas measurement techniques would be preferred if the patterns of greenhouse gas emissions are considered.

  • In this study, a series of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations carried out to evaluate the optimum design model of the internal flow path of drill bit. The Star-CCM+ code was adopted to simulate the multi-phase discharge flow of rock particles and flushing air during a drilling process. The input parameters for the flow simulation of rock particles and air were obtained from the in-situ drilling test results. After the three design factors were determined, the experimental design method (Taguchi method) was utilized to evaluate the optimum value of each factor.

  • The present study is aimed to investigate experimentally on the hydrodynamic behaviours of air ~ pulverized coal flow in rectangular combustor with cavity. Mean velocity, density and tur¬bulent properties of pulverized coal in rectangular entrained flow combustor were measured by PDA. Experimental results show that the flow reattachment point at the lower plane in the com¬buster chamber has been developed near X/D= 15. The similarities at each section are found after the flow reattachment point. The maximum values of turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stress have been shown near Y/D=6, which is higher than centerline. The maximum density of the pulverized coal sited in the range ofY/D=6~8.

  • According to the wide application of diesel equipments in tunneling faces, the air contamination by various toxic gases and carcinogenic diesel particulate matter becomes a serious problem these days. For taking a scientific measures to solve the problem, the way to simulate 3 dimensional flow movement of the working sites is required. In this paper, the newly developed simulation program(3D-FLOW) and the results of a simulation on a model tunneling workings using diesel equipments are introduced. In case of typical model of tunneling face, the gas concentration of human height is about one third of roof concentration and right side half of the tunnel shows better environment than left half. NOx concentration of workings can be estimated about 0.45ppm which is much lower than permissible level(5 ppm).

  • This paper reports an experimental study around a module about forced air flow by blower($35{\times}35{\times}6mm^3$) in portable PC(10mm high, 200mm wide, and 235mm long). The channel inlet flow velocity has been varied between 0.26, 0.52 and 0.78m/s. The power input to the module is 4Wthis report, particular attention is directed to the fluid flow and adiabatic wall temperature($T_(ad)$) around a module which is under fluid mechanical and thermal influences of the module. The fluid flow around a module was visualized using PIV system. Liquid crystal thernography is used to determine the adiabatic wall temperature around a heated module on an acrylic board. Plots of $T_(ad)$ (or F) show marked effects of dispersion of thermal wake near the module.
