  • The water management is one of the key issues in low operating temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The gas diffusion layer (GDL) allows the reactant gases flow to the reaction sites of the catalyst layer (CL). At high current density, generated water forms droplets because the normal operating temperature is $60{\sim}80^{\circ}C$. If liquid water is not evacuated properly, the pores in the GDL will be blocked and the performance will be reduced severely. In this study, the microchannel GDL was proposed to solve the flooding problem. The liquid water transport through 3-D constructed conventional GDL and microchannel GDL was analyzed varying air velocity, water velocity, and contact angle. The simulation results showed that the liquid water was evacuated rapidly through the microchannel GDL because of the lower flow resistance. Therefore, the microchannel GDL was efficient to remove liquid water in the GDL and gas channels.

  • The objective of the paper is to investigate the effect of mix designing factors on the workability and rheological parameters of self compacting concrete in order to facilitate the difficulties of quality control of high sensitivity of SCC. Mix proportions of SCC were prepared with various conditions of coarse, and fine aggregate, and unit water content, and the SCC mixtures were tested on workability, rheological properties to provide basic data for quantitative evaluation. Test results indicated that the yield stress of SCC decreased with increasing the coarse aggregate volume ratio, and increased with increasing the amount of VMA. However, unit water content, fine aggregate type, and air content didn't affect the yield stress value. The plastic viscosity according to the mixing factors showed a similar tendency to the yield stress. In addition, there was no correlation between yield stress and workability (flow, T50, V-lot). However, there was closely correlation among plastic viscosity and T50 and V-lot. Especially, T50 and V-lot time decreased with decreasing plastic viscosity.

  • We investigate the transparent TFTs using a transparent ZnSnO3 (ZTO)/Ag/ZTO multilayer electrode as S/D electrodes with low resistivity of $3.24{\times}10^{-5}$ ohm-cm, and high transparency of 86.29% in ZTO based TFTs. The Transparent TFTs (TTFTs) are prepared on glass substrate coated 100 nm of ITO thin film. On atomic layer deposited $Al_2\;O_3$, 50 nm ZTO layer is deposited by RF magnetron sputtering through a shadow mask for channel layer using ZTO target with 1 : 1 molar ratio of ZnO : $SnO_2$. The power of 100W, the working pressure of 2mTorr, and the gas flow of Ar 20 sccm during the ZTO deposition. After channel layer deposition, a ZTO (35 nm)/Ag (12 nm)/ZTO(35 nm) multilayer is deposited by DC/RF magnetron sputtering to form transparent S/D electrodes which are patterned through the shadow mask. Devices are annealed in air at 300$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min following ZTO deposition. Using UV/Visible spectrometer, the optical transmittances of the TTFT using ZTO/Ag/ ZTO multilayer electrodes are compared with TFT using Mo electrode. The structural properties of ZTO based TTFT with ZTO/Ag/ZTO multilayer electrodes are analyzed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The transfer and output characterization of ZTO TTFTs are examined by a customized probe station with HP4145B system in are.

  • In this study, the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics within sandwich panels are investigated using computational fluid dynamics. Within the sandwich panels having periodic cellular cores, air can freely move inside the core section so that the structure is able to perform multi-functional roles such as simultaneous load bearing and heat dissipation. Thus, there needs to examine the thermal and flow analysis with respect to design variables and various conditions. In this regard, ANSYS Fluent was utilized to explore the flow and heat transfer within the pyramidal truss sandwich structures by varying the truss angle and inlet velocity. Without the entry effect in the first unitcell, the constant rate of pressure and the constant rate of Nusselt number was observed. As a result, it was demonstrated that Nusselt number increases and friction factor decreases as the inlet velocity increases. Moreover, the rate of Nusselt number and friction factor was appreciable in the range of V=1-5m/s due to the transition from laminar to turbulent flow. Regarding the effect of design variable, the variation of truss angle did not significantly influence the characteristics.

  • A computational fluid dynamics(CFD) model is developed and validated with on-site experiments for a urea-based SNCR(selective non-catalytic reduction) process to reduce the nitrogen oxides($NO_x$) in a municipal incinerator. The three-dimensional turbulent reacting flow CFD model having a seven global reaction mechanism under the condition of low CO concentration and 12% excess air and droplet evaporation is used for fluid dynamics simulation of the SNCR process installed in the incinerator. In this SNCR process, urea solution and atomizing air were injected into the secondary combustor, using one front nozzle and two side nozzles. The exit temperature($980^{\circ}C$) of simulation has the same value as in situ experiment one. The $NO_x$ reduction efficiencies of 57% and 59% are obtained from the experiment and CFD simulation, respectively at NSR=1.8(normalized stoichiometric ratio) for the equal flow rate ratio from the three nozzles. It is observed in the CFD simulations with varying the flowrate ratio of the three nozzles that the injection of a two times larger front nozzle flowrate than the side nozzle flowrate produces 8% higher $NO_x$ reduction efficiency than the injection of the equal ratio flowrate in each nozzle.

  • A gasoline direct injection engine has an intake air temperature can be lowered by the fuel vaporization in the combustion chamber increase the volume efficiency is high compression ratio. Therefore, study for injection rate and characteristics which influence mixture formation in combustion chamber is important. Movement of the injector needle has a direct effect on the injection of the fuel, such as formation of cavitation, the fuel injection rate, etc. Therefore, recent studies on the dynamic characteristics of the injector considering the movement of the needle have been reported, but it takes a lot of time and cost to experimentally confirm the movement of the needle inside the injector. In this study, AMESim, a commercial 1-D code, and Star-CCM+, a 3-D CFD code, were used to predict the dynamic performance of the injector with needle motion. In order to predict the movement of the needle under the high pressure, the result of the surface pressure distribution according to the movement of the needle was derived by using the morphing technique of flow analysis. In addition, we predicted the injection rate of the injector considering the movement of the needle in conjunction with the 1-D code. The injection rate of the injector was measured by the BOSCH's method and the results were similar to those of the simulation results. This method can predict the injection rate and injection characteristics and this result is expected to be used to predict the performance of gasoline direct injection engines with low cost and time in the future.

  • Angelicae gigantis Radix (dried root of Angelica gigas) including major bioactives such as decursin and decursinol angelate provides rich flavors and several healthy benefits. Recent studies have shown that ultrafine powders of herbal medicines provide better physical properties and biological activities. Thus, ultrafine Angelica powder was added into the oligosaccharide syrup to provide flavors and healthy benefits in this study. Angelicae gigantis Radix was pulverized into d(0.1) = 3.220, d(0.5) = 7.822, and d(0.9) = 7.817 $\mu$m respectively using an air-flow mill. The ultrafine Angelica powder was added into the oligosaccharide syrup process with different ratios of water to oligosaccharide syrup at 1:5, 1:8, 1:11, and 1:14. The physicochemical properties such as viscosity and bulk density were measured. The Stokes' law was applied to predict the sedimentation velocity of the added Angelica powder in the syrup. The Angelica syrup prepared in this experiment showed good stability since the Angelica particles precipitated down slowly. The ratio of water to oligosaccharide syrup at 1:11 showed the optimal preparation in terms of the stability and the viscosity. The ultrafine-sized herbal powders such as Angelicae gigantis Radix have potentials for various food and pharmaceutical applications.

  • A novel 3D mathematical model for water film runback and icing on a rotating surface is established in this work, where both inertial forces caused by the rotation and shear forces due to the air flow are taken into account. The mathematical model of the water film runback and energy conservation of phase transition process is established, with a cyclical average method applied to simulate the unsteady parameters variation at angles of attack. Ice accretion on a conical spinner surface is simulated and the results are compared with the experimental data to validate the presented model. Then Ice accretion on a cowling surface is numerically investigated. Results show that a higher temperature would correspond to a larger runback ice area and thinner ice layer for glaze ice. Rotation would enhance the icing process, while it would not significantly affect the droplet collection efficiency for an axi-symmetric surface. In the case at angle of attack, the effect of rotation on ice shape is appreciable, ice would present a symmetric shape, while in a stationary case the shape is asymmetric.

  • Noise regulation of heavy construction machinery is getting stricter: 3 dB per every 4 year in European community. To meet this requirement many engineers have adopted the enclosing structures with thick absorbing materials and small opening, This increases internal temperature of the enclosure which have engine systems such as electric equipment that are vulnerable to heat, and engine block and muffler that can be regarded as heat sources. So noise control engineers have to consider a coupling problem: combining heat balance and noise reduction. This paper describes this approach by introducing simple heat transfer theory and SEA. The enclosing system of the loader whose enclosing structure consists of two rooms is investigated to show the validity of this method. The results represent that the simple heat transfer theory can be useful to estimate cooling performance when it is linked together by the back pressure theory in duct system. and the radiated noise can also be estimated by the SEA. Therefore a designer can use these approaches to define the opening ratio of an enclosure and the mass flow rate of air considering radiating noise.
