  • The evaluation of reheat cracking susceptibility in CrMoV turbine rotor steel was performed using thermally simulated heat affected zones. The examinations were carried out in terms of microstructural characterization, microhardness measurement and a Charpy type notch opening three point bend test. It was found that reheat cracking susceptibility increased as the peak temperature increased. This effect was due to the combined effects of the carbide dissolution and unrestricted grain growth at 1350.deg. C peak temperature. Reheat cracking susceptibility was estimated based on microhardness measurement and prior austenite grain size. It was established that for this particular material, reheat cracking in coarse grained heat affected zone can be eliminated if the microhardness is below about 360DPH and the grain size is below about 30.mu.m. It is evident that reheat cracking susceptibility can be eliminated or reduced by carefully controlling the welding parameters such that a refined structure is produced in the coarse grained heat affected zone.

  • Long time creep strength and life prediction of 1% Cr-Mo-V and 12% Cr rotor steel were performed by using round-bar type specimens under static load at 500-600.deg. C TTP (time temperature parameter), MCM (minimum commitment method) and ISM (initial strain method newly devised) as life prediction methods were investigated, and the results could be summarized as follows. (1) The minimum parameter of SEE (standard error) by TTP was proved as LMP (larson-miller parameter), and the minimum parameter of RMS (root mean squares), by data less than 10$^{3}$hrs was MHP (manson-haferd parameter). (2) The parameters of the minimum and the maximum strength values predicted in $10^{5}$hrs creep life of 1% Cr-Mo-V steel by TTP were LMP and MSP, respectively. In case of 12% Cr steel above $550^{\circ}C$ OSDP (orr-sherby-dorn parameter) was minimum and MSP (manson-succop parameter) was maximum, but below $550^{\circ}C$, the inverse phenomena was observed. On the other hand the creep strengths before $10^{3}hrs$ life by MCM were similar to those by TTP, but the strengths after $10^{3}hrs$ life were 10-25% lower than those by TTP. (3) Creep strengths by ISM were maximum 5% lower than those by TTP. Because $10^{5}hrs$ strengths were similar to those of the lower band by TTP, the ISM was safer than the TTP.

  • When shooting small arms, the inner surface temperature is heated up to about $700{\sim}1,000^{\circ}C$ by the friction of the bullet and the inner wall of the barrel and the combustion of propellant. High-temperature propellant gas and high-speed movement of the bullet cause corrosion of the inner wall, which is noticeable immediately in front of the chamber. In this study, the mechanical properties of Cr-Mo-V steel, which is the base material, were tested using Taguchi experimental design to find the best nitriding treatment conditions. For the nitriding process, the working time, salt bath temperature, and salt concentration were combined as three conditions and placed in the $L_9(3^4)$, orthogonal array table. The thicknesses of the white layer and the nitrogen diffusion layer were measured after nitriding under each condition in a salt bath furnace. Durability was evaluated by measuring the degree of dispersion through actual shooting because it was difficult to evaluate the mechanical properties of the cylinder inner structure. As a result, it was confirmed that the durability was optimal at $565^{\circ}C$, 1 hour, 0.5%. These optimal conditions were selected by the statistical analysis of the Minitab program(ver.17).

  • Recently developed Austenite stainless steel, 309L was used to overlay on 3Cr-1Mo-V-Ti-B steels, using Electroslag welding process, which wide electrodes were adopted. Transition region in welding interlayer relating to disbonding crack was investigated. Also, the effect of welding condition on the width of transition region and coarsening grains of the austenite were studied. 1) With increasing welding speed the width of martensite at transient region was increased, but the amount of delta ferrite in weld metal was reduced, being fine grained. 2) The form of martensite at the transition region was occurred by reversible transformation during cooling since the interdiffusion of Cr and Ni from weld metal and Fe and C from base metals at the transition region, causes to lowering the concentration of Cr and Ni at the transition region, leading to increasing Ms point. 3) With increasing welding speed, the grain of austenite formed at the welding interface was finer. With increasing welding current under the same welding speed, the grain size of the austenite was finer. At high current, original grain size of the austenite is coarse, but the austenite has fine grains because the austenite was transformed to martensite during cooling. 4) In the case of high welding speed, the width of martensite at the welding interface was increased, but the grain size of austenite at the welding interface was finer. This indicates that the inhibition of disbonding crack may be achieved through dispersening fine carbides in the gain boundary.

M6C 탄화물은 주변의 molybdenum 농도를 떨어뜨려 강도의 저하를 가져오며 크립 기공의 발생 원인을 제공하였다.

  • In order to evaluate the proper fracture strength of microstructures in a steel weldment, smaller size loading ball than used for a conventional small punch(CSP) testing is required due to regional limitation on constitutive structures. In this study, the minimized loading ball(${\varphi}1.5mm$) and bore diameter of lower die(${\varphi}3mm$) were designed for an advanced small punch(ASP) test. The results obtained from the ASP test were compared with those from a CSP testing for a X20CrMoV121 steel weldment. It was found that the ASP test clearly showed the microstructural dependance on fracture strength and ductile-brittle transition behavior of the weldment. In the ASP test, especially, the cracks tend to initiate for various directions within hemispherical indentation region of an objective structure in SP test. This indicates that the evaluation of more proper fracture strength for F.L+CGHAZ, FGHAZ and ICHAZ can be performed by means of the ASP test in a steel weldment.

  • The phase changes, nitride precipitation and hardness variations of 14%Cr-6.7Ni-0.65Mo-0.26Nb-0.05V-0.03C super martensitic stainless steel were investigated after nitrogen permeation heat treatment at a temperature range between $1050^{\circ}C$ and $1150^{\circ}C$. The nitrogen-permeated surface layer was transformed into austenite. The rectangular type NbN, NbCrN precipitates and fine round type precipitate were coexisted in the surface austenite layer, while the interior region that was free from nitrogen permeation kept the martensitic phase. The hardness of surface austenite showed 280 Hv, while the interior region of martensite phase represented 340 Hv. When tempering the nitrogen-permeated steel at $450^{\circ}C$, a maximum hardness of 433 Hv was appeared, probably this is attributed to the secondary hardening effect of the precipitates. The nitrogen concentration decreased gradually with increasing depth below the surface after showing a maximum of 0.3% at the outmost surface. The strong affinity between nitrogen and Cr enabled the substitutional element Cr to move from interiors to the surface when nitrogen diffuse form surface to the interior. Corrosion resistance of nitrogen permeated steel was superior to that of solution-anneaed steel in the solution of 1N $H_2SO_4$.
