  • The third-rail system is an important device supplying power directly to the Maglev train through physical contact with the collecting shoe. It is directly related to safety and reliability for the running of Maglev. However, most the third-rail system used in Korea depend on foreign product or technologies, Korea Urban Maglev in the development of appropriate power feeding is urgent. In particular, the turnout section is the weakness point in the system because bending force by turnout section movement and fatigue caused by repetitive motion as well as the expansion by temperature, the forces by Maglev collecting shoe is added th the third-rail. Therefore, this paper proposes the third-rail system appropriate for Korean Urban Maglev of turnout section. To verify the structural stability of POSCO ICT third-rail system, the finite element analysis and physical testing was performed. The third-rail is fixed on each side of the turn-out section steel structure by epoxy insulation supporter and the integral behaviors are occurred. Therefore, the maximum horizontal displacements of each support are investigated and then, it is applied to finite element model of the third-rail to investigate the moments and stress. Also, the bending test about one million times and Expansion Joint for the third-rail was performed. The third-rail system safety and reliability was identified by test line on Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials in Deajeon for under the actual usage environment such as the Maglev and turn-out operation.

  • Work roll wear in the cold rolling of mild steel strip is strongly affected by rolling materials, rolling conditions such as roll arrangement in the cold rolling mill and lubrication. The tests were performed to find the effects of roll arrangement n the cold rolling mill on the work roll wear under the same lubricating conditions. The obtained results are as follows:If the distance of cold rolling is about 60km, the surface roughness of its was reduced by half(Ra 0.49${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and Pc(peak count) also was decreased to 60 ea/cm.It is easier for CC(Continuous casting) to make a slip on rolling than IC(Ingot casting). It is due to surface mirror in which first residual product appears and iron powder included Al2O3 is sticked. Because bending degree of 4Hi-rolling mill is higher than 6Hi-rolling mill, the first surface mirror was occurred to its center-point which is loaded strongly. 6Hi-rolling mill shape-controlled by intermediate roll doesn't need the initial crown to work roll. Therefore, fatigue and wear would appear a little bit.

  • An experimental method was suggested for obtaining fracture toughness ($K_{Ic}$) and the tensile strength (${\sigma}_t$) of chopped strand glass fiber reinforced polymer concretes (PC). Semi-circular bend (SCB) specimens subjected to three-point bending were used for conducting the experiments on the PC material. While the edge cracked SCB specimen could be used to evaluate fracture toughness, the tensile strength was obtained from the un-cracked SCB specimen. The experiments showed the practical applicability of both cracked and un-cracked SCB specimens for using as suitable techniques for measuring $K_{Ic}$ and ${\sigma}_t$ in polymer concretes. In comparison with the conventional rectangular bend beam specimen, the suggested SCB samples need significantly less material due to its smaller size. Furthermore, the average values of ${\sigma}_t$ and $K_{Ic}$ of tested PC were approximately 3.5 to 4.5 times the corresponding values obtained for conventional concrete showing the improved strength properties of PC relative to the conventional concretes.

  • Recently, much attention has been paid to nonlinear ultrasonic technology as a potential tool to assess hidden damages that cannot be detected by conventional ultrasonic testing. One nonlinear ultrasonic technique is measurement of the resonance frequency shift, which is based on the hysteresis of the material elasticity. Sophisticated measurement of resonance frequency is required, because the change in resonance frequency is usually quite small. In this investigation, the nonlinear electromagnetic acoustic resonance (NEMAR) method was employed. The NEMAR method uses noncontact electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) in order to minimize the effect of the transducer on the frequency response of the object. Aluminum plate specimens that underwent three point bending fatigue were tested with a shear wave EMAT. The hysteretic nonlinear parameter ${\alpha}$, a key indicator of damage, was calculated from the resonance frequency shift at several levels of input voltage. The hysteretic nonlinear parameter of a damaged sample was compared to that of an intact one, showing a difference in the values.
