  • Recently three-dimensional (3-D) die design and production process has been widely introduced into the tooling shops of automotive manufacturers to reduce time-to-production of brand-new automobiles. 3-D solid models created in CAD systems are used not only for various simulations for design verification, but also for NC tool path generation to machine dies and their Styrofoam patterns. However, a lot of time and cost will be required to build solid models for dies if designers use only the generalized modeling capabilities of commercial 3-D CAD systems. To solve this problem, it is necessary to customize 3-D CAD system for the specific die design and manufacturing process. This paper describes a dedicated 3-D CAD system based on Unigraphics for die design for automotive body panels. The system provides not only 3-D design capabilities, but also standard part libraries, to enhance design productivity. The design process modeling technology has been introduced to facilitate redesign of the die for the modified panel. By introducing this system, dies can be designed more rapidly in the 3-D space, and their solid data can be directly transferred to CAM tools for NC tool path generation and simulation tools for virtual manufacturing.

  • This purpose of this study is to develop content that enables repetitive carving practice of the maxillary right central incisor (MRCI) based on augmented reality (AR). For a step-by-step practice of achieving the tooth shape, after creation of the storyboard from the square box shape in step 1 to the completed MRCI block in step 16, three-dimensional (3D) modeling data reflecting the characteristics of the mesial, distal, lingual, and labial surface of the MRCI were generated. An application was built in which 3D modeling data were output on the screen of the learner's mobile device, and image markers suitable for 3D modeling in steps 1 to 16 of the MRCI model were respectively generated. Using this information, the learner could carve a high-quality MRCI by repeatedly performing the tooth shape carving exercises. With AR, we intend to contribute to improved tooth morphology carving skills by linking the theory and practical techniques for a beginners in dentistry.

  • With property values of buildings rising, interior construction works are also increasing globally. Interior construction technology has developed into building information modeling(BIM) that can estimate and integrate material quantities. Two-dimensional(2D) drawings and three-dimensional (3D) modeling are becoming a trend owing to the demanding on-site cost and process. 2D drawings and 3D modeling have both advantages and disadvantages that give rise to defects during interior construction work. The field problems, 2D drawings, 3D modeling, and preliminary risk factors of interior construction work were analyzed to identify real problems. Based on the problem analysis, various problems were derived, such as (1) communication with purchasers, (2) communication with workers, and (3) comprehension of the drawings. In this study, a checklist for quality improvement of interior construction was proposed to address the aforementioned issues.

  • Many nations have been launched their own earth observation satellites due to much interest in space exploration. Because of this, the number of high resolution satellite are increasing day by day. With the development of web environment, general users have easy access to satellite images. The research conducted a basic study about web-based satellite photogrammetry in order to determine three dimensional coordinates easily without having profound knowledge of satellite sensor modeling. Various element technologies were analyzed to decide three dimensional coordinates by using high resolution satellite images in web environment, and case studies were conducted by using IKONOS satellite images. By applying parallel projection model, which is one of sensor modeling methods, epipolar image was created and prototype form of program that can decide three dimensional location in web environment was implemented. Through this, general users could decide three dimensional location easily in web environment and knew that already existed spatial information can be renewed and used in service area.

  • Three-dimensional geo-spatial information is important for the efficient use and management of the country and the three-dimensional expression and analysis of urban projects, such as urban plans devised by local governments and urban management. Thanks to the revitalization of the geo-spatial information service industry, it is now being variously used not only in public but also private areas. For the creation of high-guiltily three-dimensional geo-spatial information, emphasis should be placed on not only the quality of the source image and three-dimensional geo-spatial model but also the level of visualization, such as level of detail and texturing. However, in the case of existing three-dimensional geo-spatial information, its establishment process is complicated and its data are not updated frequently enough, as it uses ready-created digital maps. In addition, as it uses Ortho Images, the images exist Relief displacement. As a result, the visibility is low and the three-dimensional models of artificial features are simplified to reach LoD between 2 and 3, making the images look less realistic. Therefore, this paper, analyzed the quality of three-dimensional geo-spatial information created using the three-dimensional modeling technique were applied using Digital photogrammetry technique, using digital aerial photo images by an existing large-format digital camera and multi-looking camera. The analysis of the accuracy of visualization information of three-dimensional models showed that the source image alone, without other visualization information, secured the accuracy of 84% or more and that the establishment of three-dimensional spatial information carried out simultaneously with filming made it easier to gain the latest data. The analysis of the location accuracy of true Ortho images used in the work process showed that the location accuracy was better than the allowable horizontal position accuracy of 1:1,000 digital maps.

  • With recent developments in digital dentistry, research on techniques and materials for three-dimensional (3D) printing is actively underway. We report the clinical applications and outcomes of 3D printing of temporary crowns fabricated with polylactic acid (PLA) using a fused deposition modeling (FDM) printer. Five participants were recruited from among patients scheduled to be treated with a single full-coverage crown at a dental clinic in a university medical center from June to August 2022. We used 3D-printed crowns fabricated with PLA using an FDM printer as temporary crowns and were assessed for discomfort, fracture, and dislodging. The 3D-printed temporary crowns were maintained without fracture, dislodging, or discomfort until the permanent prosthesis was ready. The average time required for printing the temporary crowns was approximately 7 minutes. The 3D printing of temporary crowns with PLA using an FDM printer is a convenient process for dentists. However, these crowns have some limitations, such as rough surface texture and translucency; therefore, the 3D printing process should be improved to produce better prostheses.

  • This study was focused on digital restoration and surface depth modeling applying the three-dimensional laser scanning system of the Haeundae Stone Inscription. Firstly, the three-dimensional digital restoration carried out acquiring of point cloud using wide range and precision scanner, thereafter registering, merging, filtering, polygon mesh and surveyed map drawing. In particular, stroke of letters, inscribed depth and definition appearing the precision scanning polygon was outstanding compared with ones of the wide range polygon. The surface depth modeling completed through separation from polygon, establishment of datum axis, selection of datum point, contour mapping and polygon merging. Also, relative inscribed depth (5~17mm) and outline by the depth modeling was well-defined compared with photograph and polygon image of the inscription stone. The digital restoration technology merging wide range and precision scanning restored the total and detailed shape of the Stone Inscription quickly and accurately. In addition, the surface depth modeling visibly showed unclear parts from naked eye and photograph. In the future, various deteriorations and surrounding environment change of the Stone Inscription will be numerically analyze by periodic monitoring.

  • This paper presents a method of generating 3-dimensional images by preprocessing 2-dimensional abdominal images obtained using CT (computed tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) through segmentation, threshold technique, etc. and apply the method to virtual endoscopy. Three-dimensional images were visualized using indirect volume rendering, which can render at high speed using a general-purpose graphic accelerator used in personal computers. The algorithm used in the rendering is Marching Cubes, which has only a small volume of calculation. In addition, we suggested a method of producing 3-dimensional images in VRML (virtual reality modeling language) running on the Web browser without a workstation or an exclusive program. The number of nodes, the number of triangles and the size of a 3-dimensional image file from CT were 85,367, 174,150 and 10,124, respectively, and those from MRI were 34,029, 67,824 and 3,804, respectively.
