As a tool for strain measurement to work with screw driven or hydraulic material test systems, in which mechanical vibration is inherent, SSDG(Speckle Strain/Displacement Gage), ESP(Electronic Speckle Photography) and its 3-dimension version SDSP are investigated for the theory and practical appliance. Through tension test of steel strips, their validity and shortcomings are examined. As the results, it has been shown that, although SSDG and ESP provide direct measurement of in-plane strain in one direction, they are so sensitive to the out-plane displacement. On the other hand, SDSP which is aided with DIC (Digital Image Correlation) technique to trace the movement of the speckles provides not only in-plane 2-dimensional displacement field, but also out-of-plane displacement simultaneously. However, because the DIC is time-consuming, not automated yet and it needs post-processing to evaluate strain from the displacement field, SDSP appears to be not adequate as a real time sensor.

The thickness of specimen is an important factor in microscopic researches. Thicker specimen contains more information, but it is difficult to obtain well focused image with precise details due to optical limit of conventional microscope. Recently, a microscope unit that combines improved illumination system, which allows real time three-dimensional (3D) image and automatic z-stack merging software. In this research, we evaluated the usefulness of this unit in observing thick samples; Golgi stained nervous tissue and ground prepared bone, tooth, and non-transparent small sample; zebra fish teeth. Well focused image in thick samples was obtained by processing z-stack images with Panfocal software. A clear feature of neuronal dendrite branching pattern could be taken. 3D features were clearly observed by oblique illumination. Furthermore, 3D array and shape of zebra fish teeth was clearly distinguished. A novel combination of two channel oblique illumination and z-stack imaging process increased depth of field and optimized contrast, which has a potential to be further applied in the field of neuroscience, hard tissue biology, and analysis of small organic structures such as ear ossicles and zebra fish teeth.
The aim of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of combining three popular tools used in pattern recognition, which are the Active Appearance Model (AAM), the two-dimensional discrete cosine transform (2D-DCT), and Kernel Fisher Analysis (KFA), for face recognition across age variations. For this purpose, we first used AAM to generate an AAM-based face representation; then, we applied 2D-DCT to get the descriptor of the image; and finally, we used a multiclass KFA for dimension reduction. Classification was made through a K-nearest neighbor classifier, based on Euclidean distance. Our experimental results on face images, which were obtained from the publicly available FG-NET face database, showed that the proposed descriptor worked satisfactorily for both face identification and verification across age progression.
In this work a Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT)-based feature dimensionality reduced approach for fingerprint matching is proposed. The DCT is applied on a small region around the core point of fingerprint image. The performance of our proposed method is evaluated on a small database of Bologna University and two large databases of FVC2000. A dimensionally reduced feature vector is formed using only approximately 19%, 7%, and 6% DCT coefficients for the three databases from Bologna University and FVC2000, respectively. We compared the results of our proposed method with the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) method, the rotated wavelet filters (RWFs) method, and a combination of DWT+RWF and DWT+(HL+LH) subbands of RWF. The proposed method reduces the false acceptance rate from approximately 18% to 4% on DB1 (Database of Bologna University), approximately 29% to 16% on DB2 (FVC2000), and approximately 26% to 17% on DB3 (FVC2000) over the DWT based feature extraction method.
