Enhancement of Fall-Detection Rate using Frequency Spectrum Pattern Matching

  • To the elderly, sudden falls are one of the most frightening accidents. If an accident occurs, a prompt action has to be taken to deal with the situation. Recently, there have been a number of attempts to detect sudden falls using acceleration sensors embedded in the mobile devices, such as smart phones and wrist-bands. However, using the sensor readings only, the detection rate of the falls is around 65%. Ordinary daily activities such as running or jumping could not be well distinguished from the falls. In this paper, we describe our attempts on improving the fall-detection rate. We implemented a wrist-band fall detection module, using a three-axis acceleration sensor. With the pattern matching on the fall signal-strength frequency spectrum, in addition to the conventional signal strength measurement, we could improve the detection rate by 9% point. Furthermore, by applying two wrist-bands in the experiment, we could further improve the detection rate to 82%.

A Two-step Kalman/Complementary Filter for Estimation of Vertical Position Using an IMU-Barometer System (IMU-바로미터 기반의 수직변위 추정용 이단계 칼만/상보 필터)

  • Estimation of vertical position is critical in applications of sports science and fall detection and also controls of unmanned aerial vehicles and motor boats. Due to low accuracy of GPS(global positioning system) in the vertical direction, the integration of IMU(inertial measurement unit) with the GPS is not suitable for the vertical position estimation. This paper investigates an IMU-barometer integration for estimation of vertical position (as well as vertical velocity). In particular, a new two-step Kalman/complementary filter is proposed for accurate and efficient estimation using 6-axis IMU and barometer signals. The two-step filter is composed of (i) a Kalman filter that estimates vertical acceleration via tilt orientation of the sensor using the IMU signals and (ii) a complementary filter that estimates vertical position using the barometer signal and the vertical acceleration from the first step. The estimation performance was evaluated against a reference optical motion capture system. In the experimental results, the averaged estimation error of the proposed method was 19.7 cm while that of the raw barometer signal was 43.4 cm.

  • The vehicle attitude and sideslip is critical information to control the vehicle to prevent from unintended motion. Many of estimation strategy use bicycle model or IMU integration, but both of them have limits on application. The main purpose of this paper is development of vehicle orientation estimator which is robust to various vehicle state and road shape. The suggested estimator use 3-axis magnetometer, yaw rate sensor and lateral acceleration sensor to estimate three Euler angles of vehicle. The estimator is composed of two individual observers: First, comparing the known magnetic field and gravity with measured value, the TRIAD algorithm calculates optimal rotational matrix when vehicle is in static or quasi-static condition. Next, merging 3-axis magnetometer with inertial sensors, the extended Kalman filter is used to estimate vehicle orientation under dynamic condition. A validation through simulation tools, Carsim and Simulink, is performed and the results show the feasibility of the suggested estimation method.

  • The electric wheelchair is the vehicle system to support the elderly, infirm, and disabled person. Most of the electric wheelchair is used the encoder sensor for controlling the posture, and the encoder generates the defects caused by frequent mechanical friction. To improve the problem, we have designed the electric wheelchair base on triple acceleration sensor, and implemented. And its performance was evaluated through experiments.

  • Social activities of the elderly have been increasing as our society progresses toward an aging society. As their activities increase, so does the occurrence of falls that could lead to fractures. Falls are serious health hazards to the elderly. Therefore, development of a device that can detect fall accidents and prevent fracture is essential. In this study, we developed a portable fall detection system for the fracture prevention system of the elderly. The device is intended to detect a fall and activate a second device such as an air bag deployment system that can prevent fracture. The fall detection device contains a 3-axis acceleration sensor and two 2-axis tilt sensors. We measured acceleration and tilt angle of body during fall and activities of daily(ADL) living using the fall detection device that is attached on the subjects'. Moving mattress which is actuated by a pneumatic system was used in fall experiments and it could provide forced falls. Sensor data during fall and ADL were sent to computer and filtered with low-pass filter. The developed fall detection device was successful in detecting a fall about 0.1 second before a severe impact to occur and detecting the direction of the fall to provide enough time and information for the fracture preventive device to be activated. The fall detection device was also able to differentiate fall from ADL such as walking, sitting down, standing up, lying down, and running.

Construction of Measuring System for Magnetic Properties Measurement of Azimuth Angle Sensor (방위각센서의 자기특성 측정 장치 제작)

  • North indicating azimuth angle sensors have been used in airplanes, ships traditionally and nowadays employed in smart phones. For the azimuth and roll angle measurement of the sensor, 3-axis acceleration sensor was added to the 3-axis magnetic field sensor. In this work, we have constructed a measuring system for the measurement of the magnetic field and the angle uncertainty of the magnetic field sensors. Measuring system could be useful not only in non-magnetic laboratory but also in normal laboratory, we constructed small size of 3-axis Helmholtz coils for the compensation environment magnetic field (Earth magnetic field and magnetic field from building) and the generation of magnetic field for the test of magnetic field sensor. The constructed measuring system could compensate environment magnetic field below 10 nT level and generate 3-dimensional magnetic field with magnitude uncertainty of 0.2 % and angle error of $0.2^{\circ}$ within the volume of ${\pm}30mm$ diameter at center of Helmholtz coils. For the conformation of developed measuring system, We tested commercially available 3-axis magnetometer and heading sensor.

  • Self-diagnosis, regular examination, completion examination and precise safety examination on an elevator offer primary sources for evaluating performance and stability of the elevator. as critical examination for operating the elevator. The items on vibration of an elevator in the self-diagnosis and safety examination are not especially specified but vibration itself is considered as essential element to provide diverse analysis data. There is the equipment "EVA-625" for measuring vibration of an elevator. It is operated by reading data via computer and analyzing data by skilled engineer. This study aims to design and realize software to analyze data collected through the LabVIEW, a graphic program language and hardware for receiving data measuring vibration of an elevator by using 3-Axis acceleration sensor.

Construction of 3-Axis Flux-gate Magnetometer for Attitude Control of Satellite (인공위성의 자세제어용 3-축 Flux-gate 마그네토미터 제작)

  • In this work, we have constructed 3-axis flux-gate magnetometer for the attitude control of satellite. The constructed magnetometer shows uncertainty of ${\pm}1%$, noise level of $0.2nT/\sqrt{Hz}$ at 1 Hz under 1W power consumption. Environment test for satellite component, acceleration test and thermal cycle test were carried out. For the acceleration test, magnetometer was vibrated frequency ranging from 10 Hz to 1 kHz at 15 g (g : gravitational acceleration at earth), and for thermal cycle test, 4 times of thermal cycle were carried out temperature ranging from $-55^{\circ}C\;to\;+80^{\circ}C$ under vacuum of $1x10^{-6}Torr$.

  • Aircraft have a cross axis of the three each other for maintenance of aircraft position. It is called roll axis, pitch axis and yaw axis. Attitude reference system is a sensor for detecting a change of the three axis. In this paper, mobile robot platform install part of Pan-tilt and HMD attitude reference system, because of we use control camera. The acceleration sensor is very weak a lot of noise to vibration, also problem with data from process of mapping to the data problems to arise. However to solve this problem, we removed the average filter and Cosine Interpolation for Pan-tilt. Using capacity evaluation for outdoor environment for we are proposing. Mobile robot has HMD and equipped Pan-tilt. We control mobile robot camera. In this experiment result is little bit delay happening, however Pan-tilt camera is relatively stable control checking. Also, we will checking any terrain and slopes is no problem for mobile robot driving skills.

  • A real time monitoring system from a PC has been developed which can be accessed through transmitted data, which incorporates an established low powered transport system equipped with a single chip combined with wireless sensor network technology from a three-axis acceleration sensor. In order to distinguish between static posture and dynamic posture, the extracted parameter from the rapidly transmitted data needs differentiation of movement and activity structures and status for an accurate measurement. When results interpret a static formation, statistics referring to each respective formation, known as the K-mean algorithm is utilized to carry out a determination of detailed positioning, and when results alter towards dynamic activity, fuzzy algorithm (fuzzy categorizer), which is the relationship between speed and ISVM, is used to categorize activity levels into 4 stages. Also, the ISVM is calculated with the instrumented acceleration speed on the running machine according to various speeds and its relationship with kinetic energy goes through correlation analysis. With the evaluation of the proposed system, the accuracy level stands at 100% at a static formation and also a 96.79% accuracy with kinetic energy and we can easily determine the energy consumption through the relationship between ISVM and kinetic energy.
