  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate validity, reliability and reproducibility of tooth width (TW), arch length (AL) and arch length discrepancy (ALD) measured on a digital model taken via 3-dimensional model scanner and intraoral scanner compared to a plaster model. A total of 30 patients aged 12 to 18 were eligible for the study. 3 types of models were acquired from each patient: a conventional plaster model (P), a model scanned digital model (MSD) taken via Freedom UHD® and an intraoral scanned digital model (ISD) taken via CS3600® in-vivo. The reliability of TW and AL in each group was evaluated using Pearson's correlation coefficient, while the reproducibility was evaluated with intraclass correlation coefficient. The validity of space analysis was assessed by paired t-test. As a result, all measurements of P, MSD and ISD groups showed favorable reliability and reproducibility. Most of measurements for space analysis in MSD group and TW in ISD group also presented high validity. AL and ALD presented statistically significant difference between P and ISD group. The validity of measurements of space analysis in ISD group was short in doubt to valid, but clinically acceptable. Both MSD and ISD are clinically acceptable to use for space analysis but clinician should be aware that errors can be found using a digital model.

  • Slug tests can be adopted to estimate hydraulic conductivity of the slurry trench wall backfill for its abilities to reflect the in-situ performance of the construction. A comprehensive three-dimensional numerical model is developed to simulate the slug test in a slurry trench wall considering the presence of bentonite cake on the interface boundaries between the wall and the surrounding soil formation. Influential factors such as wall width (i.e., proximity of wall boundary), well deviation, vertical position of well intake section, compressibility of wall backfill, etc. are taken into account in the model. A series of simulation results are examined to evaluate the bentonite cake effect in analyzing practical slug test results in the slurry trench wall. The results show that the modified line-fitting method can be used without any correction factor for the slug test in the slurry trench wall with the presence of bentonite cake. A case study is reanalyzed with the assumption of existing bentonite cake. The results are compared with the previously reported results by the approaches assuming no bentonite cake (constant-head boundary) or upper-bound solution (no-flux boundary). The case study demonstrates the bentonite cake effect and the validity of the modified line-fitting method in the estimation of the hydraulic conductivity of the slurry wall backfill.

  • Wave drift forces which are small in magnitudes compared to the first order wave exciting forces can cause very large motion of a vessel in waves. In this paper a theoretical and experimental analysis is made of the mean and slowly varying wave dirft forces on the semi-submersible platform. Theoretical calculations are performed by using near field method with three dimensional diffraction theory and model tests are carried out in regular and irregular waves with a 1/60 semi model. Test results are compared with theoretical calculations and the mooring spring effects in the test are discussed.

  • PURPOSE. To evaluate the fit of a three-unit metal framework of fixed dental prostheses made by subtractive and additive manufacturing. MATERIALS AND METHODS. One master model of metal was fabricated. Twenty silicone impressions were made on the master die, working die of 10 poured with Type 4 stone, and working die of 10 made of scannable stone. Ten three-unit wax frameworks were fabricated by wax-up from Type IV working die. Stereolithography files of 10 three-unit frameworks were obtained using a model scanner and three-dimensional design software on a scannable working die. The three-unit wax framework was fabricated using subtractive manufacturing (SM) by applying the prepared stereolithography file, and the resin framework was fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM); both used metal alloy castings for metal frameworks. Marginal and internal gap were measured using silicone replica technique and digital microscope. Measurement data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis H test and Mann-Whitney U-test (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. The lowest and highest gaps between premolar and molar margins were in the SM group and the AM group, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the marginal gap among the 3 groups (P<.001). In the marginal area where pontic was present, the largest gap was $149.39{\pm}42.30{\mu}m$ in the AM group, and the lowest gap was $24.40{\pm}11.92{\mu}m$ in the SM group. CONCLUSION. Three-unit metal frameworks made by subtractive manufacturing are clinically applicable. However, additive manufacturing requires more research to be applied clinically.

  • In this paper, the behaviour of shell foundation was studied. In the theoretical program, the general shallow foundation theories and failure mechanism developed by Terzaghi, Mayerhof and others were reviewed and compared. In the numerical study, the 2 and 3 dimensional FEM simulations were carried out using an uncoupled-analysis approach. The results obtained from the model test show that the bearing capacity of shell foundation was about 25% to 30% larger than that of general foundation. Due to the cases of shell angle, the maximum bearing capacity of shell foundation shows when the shell angle of foundation was $60^{\circ}$. In addition, even if the shell foundation has various advantages compared with the general foundations as described above, the practical verifications in full scale size will be necessary to use in the field and will be helpful in the technical development of other special foundations.

  • In this paper, to study the stability of surrounding rock during roadway excavation in different rock mass structures, the physical model test for roadway excavation process in three types of intact rock mass, layered rock mass and massive rock mass were carried out by using the self-developed two-dimensional simulation testing system of complex underground engineering. Firstly, based on the engineering background of a deep mine in eastern China, the similar materials of the most appropriate ratio in line with the similarity theory were tested, compared and determined. Then, the physical models of four different schemes with 1000 mm (height) × 1000 mm (length) × 250 mm (width) were constructed. Finally, the roadway excavation was carried out after applying boundary conditions to the physical model by the simulation testing system. The results indicate that the supporting effect of rockbolts has a great influence on the shallow surrounding rock, and the rock mass structure can affect the overall stability of the surrounding rock. Furthermore, the failure mechanism and bearing capacity of surrounding rock were further discussed from the comparison of stress evolution characteristics, distribution of stress arch, and failure modes in different schemes.

  • The purpose of this study was to elucidate the size and morphologic characteristics of maxillary primary first molars in Korean children using three-dimensional laser scanner and compare three-dimensional image with preformed stainless steel crown. Scanned three-dimensional images of dental cast taken from 132 children(male 62, female 70) by three-dimensional laser scanner(Breuckmann opto-Top HE100, INUS, Korea) were used. Mesiodistal diameter, buccolingual diameter, occlusogingival height and crown shape of each image were calculated by Rapidform 2004 program(INUS, Korea). The values were statistically compared by independent samples t-test with 95% of significant level. The results were as follows : 1. No significant difference in crown size was found between left and right maxillay primary first molar(p>0.05). 2, Significant difference in mesiodistal diameter, buccolingual diameter, buccal occlusogingival height was found between male and female (p<0.05), and crown size of male was bigger than that of female. 3. Average image of maxillay primary first molar was shaped three-dimensionally and measured. In comparison with 3M stainless steel crown, this image was similar with No.4 or No.5 SS crown in male, No.4 in female. In comparison with ILSUNG SS crown, this image was similar with No.5 in male, No.4 in female. 4 Mesiolingual line angle area, distolingual line angle area and buccogingival ridge were more obvious in average image than 3M stainless steel crown. ILSUNG SS crown was more square and had longer mesiodistal diameter than average 3D image.

  • Hydraulic fracturing technique has been applied in various fields in order to improve the recovery of energy resources such as gas, oil and geothermal energy and research about finding out hydraulic fracturing mechanism and application has been steadily proceeded. In this study, for effective hydraulic fracturing, a scale modeling was progressed to simulate similarly with the actual site. In order to analyze the development aspect of surface crack initiation pressure during hydraulic fracturing followed by different conditions, the number of guide holes hydraulic fracturing test was carried out by setting up a hydraulic fracturing test equipment. Also, through the result, we tried to derive reliable results by comparing and analyzing the value of numerical modeling which is obtained based on the physical properties and mechanical properties with 3DEC, a three-dimensional discrete element method program. As a result, it is considered possible to generate effective crack using the guide hole.

  • This study employs three-dimensional simulation through FLAC3D to investigate the impact of installation angles on the dynamic characteristics of Triaxial Micropiles. The numerical model is validated against centrifuge test results to ensure accuracy. The findings reveal significant influences of the installation angle on the dynamic behavior of Triaxial Micropiles. Specifically, under seismic conditions such as the Capetown and San Fernando earthquakes, the lowest recorded values for peak bending moment and settlement occurred at an installation angle of 15 degrees. In contrast, when subjected to an artificial earthquake with a frequency of 2 Hz (Sine 2 Hz), Micropiles installed at 0 degrees exhibited the lowest peak bending moment, maximum axial load, and settlement values.

  • This paper proposes a model for the solutions predicting the coefficient of thermal expansion of composites including fiber-like shaped$(a_1>a_2=a_3)$ and disk-like shaped$(a_1=a_2>a_3)$ inclusions like two dimensional geometries, which was analyzed by one axis and a single aspect ratio, $(\rho_\alpha=a_1/a_3)$. The analysis follows the procedure developed for elastic moduli by using the Lee and Paul's approach. The effects of the aspect ratio on the coefficient of thermal expansion of composites containing aligned isotropic inclusions are examined. This model should be limited to analyze the composites with unidirectionally aligned inclusions and with complete binding to each other of both matrix and inclusions having homogeneous properties. The longitudinal coefficients of thermal expansion $\alpha_{11}$ decrease and approach the coefficient of thermal expansion of filler, as the aspect ratios increase. However, the transverse coefficients of thermal expansion $\alpha_{33}$ increase or decrease with the aspect ratios.
