큐벡시 스토커 소각로 2차원 비반응 유동장 수치해석 (A Numerical Study of the 2-D Cold Flow for a Qubec City Stoker Incinerator)

  • 수치해석 방법에 의해 큐백시의 스토커 소각로 유동장을 분석하였다. 수치모사의 변수는 큐백시의 스토커 소각로를 중심으로 한 5가지 내부 형상, 1차공기 속도, 2차공기 속도 및 주입각, 출구면적을 고려하였다. 검사체적에 기초한 Patankar의 유한차분 방법을 사용한 본 논문에서는 power-law scheme과 SIMPLEC 알고리즘을 사용했으며 난류 유동은 표준 k-e 모델을 이용했다. 소각로 유동장 분석을 위해서 재순환 영역의 크기, 난류 점성계수 및 이차공기의 질량분율 분포, 압력강하를 계산했다. 계산 결과는 물리적 의미에 잘 맞게 나타났으며, 큐백시의 스토커 소각로가 다른 내부 형상의 소각로에 비해 상부에 강한 난류를 가진 재순환 영역을 형성하였다.

우주발사체의 플룸에 따른 유동박리 현상에 대한 수치적 연구 (NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF PLUME-INDUCED FLOW SEPARATION FOR A SPACE LAUNCH VEHICLE)

  • In this paper, the supersonic flows around space launch vehicles have been numerically simulated by using a 3-D RANS flow solver. The focus of the study was made for investigating plume-induced flow separation(PIFS). For this purpose, a vertex-centered finite-volume method was utilized in conjunction with 2nd-order Roe's FDS to discretize the inviscid fluxes. The viscous fluxes were computed based on central differencing. The Spalart-Allmaras model was employed for the closure of turbulence. The Gauss-Seidel iteration was used for time integration. To validate the flow solver, calculation was made for the 0.04 scale model of the Saturn-5 launch vehicle at the supersonic flow condition without exhaust plume, and the predicted results were compared with the experimental data. Good agreements were obtained between the present results and the experiment for the surface pressure coefficient and the Mach number distribution inside the boundary layer. Additional calculations were made for the real scale of the Saturn-5 configuration with exhaust plume. The flow characteristics were analyzed, and the PIFS distances were validated by comparing with the flight data. The KSLV-1 is also simulated at the several altitude conditions. In case of the KSLV-1, PIFS was not observed at all conditions, and it is expected that PIFS is affected by the nozzle position.

Counter Flow 방식의 랙 다이를 이용한 고정 밀도 Worm 전조기술 개발 (Development of Form Rolling Technology for High Precision Worm Using the Rack Dies of Counter Flow Type)

  • The objective of this study is to suggest the form rolling technology to produce high precision worm on the base of three dimensional finite element simulation and experiment. It is important to determine the initial workpiece diameter in form rolling because it affects the quality of tooth profile. The calculation method of the initial workpiece diameter in form rolling is suggested and it is verified by finite element simulation. The form rolling processes of worm shaft used as automotive part using both the rack dies of counter flow type and the roll dies are considered and simulated with the same numerical model as actual process by the commercial finite element code, BEFORM-3D. Deformation modes of workpiece between the form rolling by the rack dies of counter flow type and the roll dies are investigated from the result of simulation. The experiments using rack dies and roll dies are performed under the same conditions as those of simulation. The surface roughness, the straightness and the profile of worm are measured precisely using the worm shafts obtained from experiment. The results of simulation and experiment in this study show that the form rolling process of worn shaft using the rack dies is decidedly superior to that using roll dies from the aspect of the precision of worm such as the surface roughness, the straightness and the profile of worm.

소형 풍력발전기 소음 저감을 위한 익형 설계 연구 (Design of Low Noise Airfoil for Use on Small Wind Turbines)

  • Wind power is one of the most reliable renewable energy sources and the installed wind turbine capacities are increasing radically every year. Although wind power has been favored by the public in general, the problem with the impact of wind turbine noise on people living in the vicinity of the turbines has been increased. Low noise wind turbine design is becoming more important as noise is spreading more adverse effect of wind turbine to public. This paper demonstrates the design of 10 kW class wind turbines, each of three blades, a rotor diameter 6.4m, a rated rotating speed 200 rpm and a rated wind speed 10 m/s. The optimized airfoil is dedicated for the 75% spanwise position because the dominant source of a wind turbine blade has been known as trailing edge noise from the outer 25% of the blade. Numerical computations are performed for incompressible flow and for Mach number at 0.145 and for Reynolds numbers at $1.02{\times}10^6$ with a lift performance, which is resistant to surface contamination and turbulence intensity. The objective in the low design process is to reduce noise emission, while sustaining high aerodynamic efficiency. Dominant broadband noise sources are predicted by semi-empirical formulas composed of the groundwork by Brooks et al. and Lowson associated with typical wind turbine operation conditions. During the airfoil redesign process, the aerodynamic performance is analyzed to minimize the wind turbine power loss. The results obtained from the design process show that the design method is capable of designing airfoils with reduced noise using a commercial 10 kW class wind turbine blade airfoil as a basis. The new optimized airfoil clearly indicates reduction of total SPL about 3 dB and higher aerodynamic performance.

열간 자유단조 공정시 내부 공극 압착 거동에 관한 연구 (A study on Cavity Closure Behavior During Hot Open Die Forging Process)

  • Recently, there is a need to produce a large forged part for the flight, shipping, some energies, and military industries, etc. Therefore, an open die forging technique of cast ingots is required to obtain higher quality of large size forged parts. Cogging process is one of the primary stages in many open die forging processes. In the cogging process prior to some open die forging processes, internal cavities have to be eliminated for defect-free. The present work is concerned with the elimination of the internal cavities in large ingots so as to obtain sound products. In this study, hot compression tests were carried out to obtain the flow stress of cast microstructure at different temperature and strain rates. The FEM analysis is performed to investigate the overlap defect of cast ingots during cogging stage. The measured flow stress data were used to simulate the cogging process of cast ingot using the practical material properties. Also the analysis of cavity closure is performed by using the $DEFORM^{TM}-3D$. The calculated results of cavity closure behavior are compared with the measured results before and after cogging, which are scanned by the X-ray scanner. From this result, the criteria for deformation amounts effect on the cavity closure can be investigated by the comparison between practical experiment and numerical analysis.

시뮬레이션 격자구조 제작을 위한 Mesh 기반 지질솔리드모델의 Gmsh, COMSOL 변환 프로그램 개발 (The Development of Converting Program from Sealed Geological Model to Gmsh, COMSOL for Building Simulation Grid)

  • FEM 수치해석을 위한 사면체격자 생성을 위해서는 물체의 볼륨정보를 표현할 수 있는 Boundary Representation (B-Rep) 모델이 필요하다. 공학분야에서는 파라메트릭 솔리드 모델링(Parametric Solid Modeling) 방법을 사용하여 B-Rep 모델을 정의한다. 반면 지질모델링은 메쉬 기반의 불연속(discrete) 모델링 방법을 사용하는데 이를 지질솔리드모델(Sealed Geological Model)이라 부르며 지층, 단층, 관입암, 모델 경계면과 같은 지질학적 인터페이스들을 이용해 지질도메인을 정의한다. 공학분야의 파라메트릭 모델링과 불연속 모델링 방식의 자료구조의 차이로 인해 불연속 B-Rep 모델은 공학분야에서 사용하는 다양한 오픈소스, 상용 메쉬제작 소프트웨어와 쉽게 호환되지 않는다. 이 논문에서는 공학용 메쉬 제작 소프트웨어와의 호환성을 가지도록 지질솔리드모델을 대표적인 오픈소스인 Gmsh와 상용 FEM 해석 소프트웨어인 COMSOL로 변환하는 프로그램을 제작하였다. 지질모델링 소프트웨어를 통해 제작한 복잡한 지질구조모델을 사용자 편의성을 갖춘 다수의 상용 소프트웨어서 쉽게 활용할 수 있어 지열, 암석역학 등 다양한 지구과학 시뮬레이션 연구에 도움이 될 것으로 생각된다.

Soil and ribbed concrete slab interface modeling using large shear box and 3D FEM

  • Cast in situ and grouted concrete helical piles with 150-200 mm diameter half cylindrical ribs have become an economical and effective choice in Shanghai, China for uplift piles in deep soft soils. Though this type of pile has been successful used in practice, the reinforcing mechanism and the contribution of the ribs to the total resistance is not clear, and there is no clear guideline for the design of such piles. To study the inclusion of ribs to the contribution of shear resistance, the shear behaviour between silty sand and concrete slabs with parallel ribs at different spacing and angles were tested in a large direct shear box ($600mm{\times}400mm{\times}200mm$). The front panels of the shear box are detachable to observe the soil deformation after the test. The tests were modelled with three-dimensional finite element method in ABAQUS. It was found that, passive zones can be developed ahead of the ribs to form undulated failure surfaces. The shear resistance and failure mode are affected by the ratio of rib spacing to rib diameter. Based on the shape and continuity of the failure zones at the interface, the failure modes at the interface can be classified as "punching", "local" or "general" shear failure respectively. With the inclusion of the ribs, the pull out resistance can increase up to 17%. The optimum rib spacing to rib diameter ratio was found to be around 7 based on the observed experimental results and the numerical modelling.

지반-구조물 상호작용이 면진 원전구조물의 지진응답에 미치는 영향 평가 (Evaluation of the Soil-structure Interaction Effect on Seismically Isolated Nuclear Power Plant Structures)

  • This study intends to evaluate the conservativeness of the fixed-base analysis as compared to the soil-structure interaction (SSI) analysis for the seismically isolated model of a nuclear power plant in Korea. To that goal, the boundary reaction method (BRM), combining frequency-domain and time-domain analyses in a twofold process, is adopted for the SSI analysis considering the nonlinearity of the seismic base isolation. The program KIESSI-3D is used for computing the reaction forces in the frequency domain and the program MIDAS/Civil is applied for the nonlinear time-domain analysis. The BRM numerical model is verified by comparing the results of the frequency-domain analysis and time-domain analysis for the soil-structure system with an equivalent linear base isolation model. Moreover, the displacement response of the base isolation and the horizontal response at the top of the structure obtained by the nonlinear SSI analysis using BRM are compared with those obtained by the fixed-base analysis. The comparison reveals that the fixed-base analysis provides conservative peak deformation for the base isolation but is not particularly conservative in term of the floor response spectrum of the superstructure.

Research on aerodynamic force and structural response of SLCT under wind-rain two-way coupling environment

  • Wind-resistant design of existing cooling tower structures overlooks the impacts of rainfall. However, rainstorm will influence aerodynamic force on the tower surface directly. Under this circumstance, the structural response of the super-large cooling tower (SLCT) will become more complicated, and then the stability and safety of SLCT will receive significant impact. In this paper, surrounding wind fields of the world highest (210 m) cooling tower in Northwest China underthree typical wind velocities were simulated based on the wind-rain two-way coupling algorithm. Next, wind-rain coupling synchronous iteration calculations were conducted under 9 different wind speed-rainfall intensity combinations by adding the discrete phase model (DPM). On this basis, the influencing laws of different wind speed-rainfall intensity combinations on wind-driving rain, adhesive force of rain drops and rain pressure coefficients were discussed. The acting mechanisms of speed line, turbulence energy strength as well as running speed and trajectory of rain drops on structural surface in the wind-rain coupling field were disclosed. Moreover, the fitting formula of wind-rain coupling equivalent pressure coefficient of the cooling tower was proposed. A systematic contrast analysis on its 3D distribution pattern was carried out. Finally, coupling model of SLCT under different working conditions was constructed by combining the finite element method. Structural response, buckling stability and local stability of SLCT under different wind velocities and wind speed-rainfall intensity combinations were compared and analyzed. Major research conclusions can provide references to determine loads of similar SLCT accurately under extremely complicated working conditions.

Numerical analysis of the combined aging and fillet effect of the adhesive on the mechanical behavior of a single lap joint of type Aluminum/Aluminum

  • Bonded joints have proven their performance against conventional joining processes such as welding, riveting and bolting. The single-lap joint is the most widely used to characterize adhesive joints in tensile-shear loadings. However, the high stress concentrations in the adhesive joint due to the non-linearity of the applied loads generate a bending moment in the joint, resulting in high stresses at the adhesive edges. Geometric optimization of the bonded joint to reduce this high stress concentration prompted various researchers to perform geometric modifications of the adhesive and adherends at their free edges. Modifying both edges of the adhesive (spew) and the adherends (bevel) has proven to be an effective solution to reduce stresses at both edges and improve stress transfer at the inner part of the adhesive layer. The majority of research aimed at improving the geometry of the plate and adhesive edges has not considered the effect of temperature and water absorption in evaluating the strength of the joint. The objective of this work is to analyze, by the finite element method, the stress distribution in an adhesive joint between two 2024-T3 aluminum plates. The effects of the adhesive fillet and adherend bevel on the bonded joint stresses were taken into account. On the other hand, degradation of the mechanical properties of the adhesive following its exposure to moisture and temperature was found. The results clearly showed that the modification of the edges of the adhesive and of the bonding agent have an important role in the durability of the bond. Although the modification of the adhesive and bonding edges significantly improves the joint strength, the simultaneous exposure of the joint to temperature and moisture generates high stress concentrations in the adhesive joint that, in most cases, can easily reach the failure point of the material even at low applied stresses.
