A novel 3D BE formulation for general multi-zone domains under body force loading

  • The current paper proposes a boundary element formulation, applicable to 2-D and 3-D elastostatics problems using a unified approach for transformations of the domain integrals into boundary integrals. The method is applicable to linear problems encompassing both finite and infinite multi-region domains allowing non-vanishing body forces. Numerical results agree quite well with the analytical solutions; while the present method offers easy formulation with less numerical efforts in comparison to FEM or some BEM which need interior points to treat arbitrary body forces. It is demonstrated that the method has the potential to have profound impact on engineering design, notably in dam-foundation interaction.

  • The lattice Boltzmann (LB) method has been used to simulate rarefied gas flows in a micro-system as an alternative tool. However, previous results were mainly focused on a simple geometry with flat walls because the LB method is modeled on uniform Cartesian lattices. When previous boundary conditions for the microflows are applied to curved walls, the use of them requires approximation of the curved boundary by a series of stair steps, and introduces additional errors. For macroflows, no-slip curved wall boundary treatments have been developed remarkably in order to overcome these limits. However, the investigations for the slip curved wall boundary have rarely been performed for microflows. In this work, a curved boundary treatment of the LB method for a slip flow has been introduced. The results of the LB method for 2D microchannel and 3D microtube flows are in excellent agreement with the analytical solutions.

  • A simple and sensitive analytical method based on RP-HPLC with UV detector$(225{\cal}nm)$ and mobile phases using $0.1{\%}$ phosphoric acid and acetonitrile was developed for simultaneous determination of quinclorac, bentazone, 2,4-D, bensulfuron-methyl, dymuron, capropamide, pencycuron, ethofenprox. This method was resulted in recovery of $78{\~}96{\%}$ with RSD $3.3{\~}7.5{\%}$, LODs $0.12{\~}0.84$ and LOQs $0.34{\~}1.20{\cal}mg/L$. Calibration curves were linear with r of $0.9995{\~}0.9999$.

폴리염화비페닐류 함유 액상폐기물 시험방법별 분석결과 비교 (Comparison of three analytical methods for PCBs-containing liquid wastes)

  • 본 연구에서는 국제적으로 관심의 대상이 되고 있는 폴리염화비페닐류 함유 액상폐기물의 효율적인 관리를 위해 국내에서 사용되고 있는 L2000DX을 이용한 스크리닝, 신속 GC/ECD 및 기존 GC/ECD 분석방법을 절연유 15건에 적용하였다. 분석 결과 L2000DX을 이용한 경우에는 4.4~182.8 mg/L의 농도 범위로 Aroclor 1242 환산농도가 검출된 반면, 기존 GC/ECD 및 신속 GC/ECD를 이용한 분석 결과 각각 불검출~14.63 mg/L 및 불검출~13.03 mg/L로 나타났다. GC/ECD 분석방법들 간에는 약 4 mg/L이하에서 거의 차이가 없었으나, 국내의 규제농도인 2 mg/L부근의 검출농도에서는 일부 시료의 경우 기존 GC/ECD 분석결과(2.71 mg/L)에 비해 신속 GC/ECD 방법이 다소 낮은(2.49 mg/L) 측정치를 보여 국내 규제기준 2 mg/L부근에서 저평가되는 경향이 있는 것으로 나타났다.

  • The columns with large widths in out-of-plane direction fail showing the high nonlinearity of strain distribution. In order to predict the nonlinear behavior with reasonable accuracy in 2 dimensional analysis the material models taking this characteristic into account are indispensible. In this study equivalent softening model is developed which releases the same amount of energy at failure as that of 3-D analysis. Its validity is confirmed by comparing the analysis result with that of 3-D.

  • In this paper, an analytical model for the prediction of the elastic properties of multi-axial warp knit fabric (MWK) composites is proposed. The geometric limitation, effect of stitching fibers and design parameters of MWK composites are considered in the model. The elastic behavior of MWK composites was conducted by using an averaging method. The predicted elastic properties are in reasonably good agreement with experimental values. Finally the effect of stitching in the MWK composites are discussed.

Using an equivalent continuum model for 3D dynamic analysis of nanocomposite plates

  • Most of the early studies on plates vibration are focused on two-dimensional theories, these theories reduce the dimensions of problems from three to two by introducing some assumptions in mathematical modeling leading to simpler expressions and derivation of solutions. However, these simplifications inherently bring errors and therefore may lead to unreliable results for relatively thick plates. The main objective of this research paper is to present 3-D elasticity solution for free vibration analysis of continuously graded carbon nanotube-reinforced (CGCNTR) rectangular plates resting on two-parameter elastic foundations. The volume fractions of oriented, straight single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction. In this study, an equivalent continuum model based on the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach is employed to estimate the effective constitutive law of the elastic isotropic medium (matrix) with oriented, straight carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The proposed rectangular plates have two opposite edges simply supported, while all possible combinations of free, simply supported and clamped boundary conditions are applied to the other two edges. The formulations are based on the three-dimensional elasticity theory. A semi-analytical approach composed of differential quadrature method (DQM) and series solution is adopted to solve the equations of motion. The fast rate of convergence of the method is demonstrated and comparison studies are carried out to establish its very high accuracy and versatility. The 2-D differential quadrature method as an efficient and accurate numerical tool is used to discretize the governing equations and to implement the boundary conditions. The convergence of the method is demonstrated and to validate the results, comparisons are made between the present results and results reported by well-known references for special cases treated before, have confirmed accuracy and efficiency of the present approach. The novelty of the present work is to exploit Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach in order to reveal the impacts of the volume fractions of oriented CNTs, different CNTs distributions, various coefficients of foundation and different combinations of free, simply supported and clamped boundary conditions on the vibrational characteristics of CGCNTR rectangular plates. The new results can be used as benchmark solutions for future researches.

Extrapolating B-H Curve Data using Common Electrical Steel Characteristics for High Magnetic Saturation Applications

  • In this paper, an adequate B-H curve extrapolation method is proposed and its reliability is verified through experiments. A method is developed to estimate the magnetic saturation induction from the density of the lamination core and electrical resistivity. The magnetic saturation induction of electrical steels measured using a vibration sample magnetometer are compared with the analytical results to validate the accuracy of the proposed estimation method. It is found that the predicted error in the magnetic saturation induction of the electrical steels are approximately 1.2% when the proposed method is used. The performance of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors that applies the proposed method are evaluated via 2D nonlinear finite element analysis and through experiments. Based on the obtained results, the extrapolated B-H curves from the estimated saturation induction can be used for various analyses in saturation region.

  • 고순도 암모니움 명반 결정을 합성한 후 열분해 시켜 높은 순도의 초미세 산화알루미늄(${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$)분말을 합성하였다. 이 때 불순물인 Na$_2$O의 혼입과 Al(OH)$_3$의 침전을 최대한으로 방지하기 위해 pH = 1.5∼2.5의 영역에서 암모니움 명반을 합성하였으며, pH 조건은 수용액 중에서 Na와 Al 이온의 수산화물과 탄산염 형성을 고려, pH에 따른 각 이온종들의 농도가 이론적으로 계산되었다. 그 결과 ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$의 순도는 99.7%이상이고, 입자는 ${\phi}$ = 0.1∼0.5 ${\mu}$m의 균일한 크기의 분말이 얻어졌다.

Simultaneous Determination of C22-C26 Very Long - Chain Fatty Acids Following tert-Butyldimethylsilyl Derivatization by Stable Isotope GC- MS for the Screening of Adrenoleucodystrophy

  • A rapid analytical method was developed to quantify very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs, C22:0, C24:0, C26:0) in human plasma with good sensitivity and specificity using tert-butyldimethylsilyl (TBDMS) derivatization and stable isotope GC-MS selective ion monitoring (GC-MS/SIM). Two-hundred and fifty ${\mu}L$ of plasma was fortified with deuterated stable isotope internal standards (d3-C22:0, d3-C24:0, d3-C26:0) and standard mixtures of chloroform and methanol, and then extracted with hexane and acetonitrile. To upper layer of liquid-liquid-extraction, N-(t-Butyldimethylsilyl)-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide was added and then heated to $60^{\circ}C$ for 30 min to produce the TBDMS derivatives. Derivatives of VLCFAs were analyzed by GC-MS/SIM. Calibration curves showed a linear relationship for the target compounds in the concentration range of $10^{-4}{\sim}2{\times}10^3\;{\mu}g/mL$ with the correlation coefficient ranging from 0.996 to 0.999. The limit of quantification for the plasma was $10^{-4}{\sim}2{\times}10^{-4}\;{\mu}g/mL$ (S/N=3). When applied to the plasma specimens of patients with peroxisomal disorder, X-linked adrenoleucodystropy (ALD, Mckusick 202370), the method clearly differentiated normal subjects from ALD patients. The C24:0/C22:0 and C26:0/C22:0 ratios were significantly elevated in the plasma of patients with X-linked ALD compared to normal subjects. The new developed method might be useful for a rapid and sensitive diagnosis of X-linked ALD and other peroxisomal disorders.
