KANT (KAIST Advanced Nuclear Tachygraphy) is a PWR core simulator recently developed at Korea Advance Institute of Science and Technology, which solves three-dimensional steady-state and transient multigroup neutron diffusion equations under Cartesian geometries alongside the incorporation of thermal-hydraulics feedback effect for multi-physics calculation. It utilizes the standard Nodal Expansion Method (NEM) accelerated with various Coarse Mesh Finite Difference (CMFD) methods for neutronics calculation. For thermal-hydraulics (TH) calculation, a single-phase flow model and a one-dimensional cylindrical fuel rod heat conduction model are employed. The time-dependent neutronics and TH calculations are numerically solved through an implicit Euler scheme, where a detailed coupling strategy is presented in this paper alongside a description of nodal equivalence, macroscopic depletion, and pin power reconstruction. For validation of the steady, transient, and depletion calculation with pin power reconstruction capacity of KANT, solutions for various benchmark problems are presented. The IAEA 3-D PWR and 4-group KOEBERG problems were considered for the steady-state reactor benchmark problem. For transient calculations, LMW (Lagenbuch, Maurer and Werner) LWR and NEACRP 3-D PWR benchmarks were solved, where the latter problem includes thermal-hydraulics feedback. For macroscopic depletion with pin power reconstruction, a small PWR problem modified with KAIST benchmark model was solved. For validation of the multi-physics analysis capability of KANT concerning large-sized PWRs, the BEAVRS Cycle1 benchmark has been considered. It was found that KANT solutions are accurate and consistent compared to other published works.
Coolant mixing under natural circulation flow regime constitutes a key parameter that may play a role in the course of an accidental transient in a nuclear pressurized water reactor. This issue has motivated some experimental investigations carried out within the OECD/NEA PKL projects. The aim was to assess the coolant mixing phenomenon in the reactor pressure vessel downcomer and the core lower plenum under several asymmetric steady and unsteady flow conditions, and to provide experimental data for code validations. Former studies addressed the mixing phenomenon using, on the one hand, one-dimensional computational approaches with cross flows that are not fully validated under transient conditions and, on the other hand, expensive computational fluid dynamic tools that are not always justified for large-scale macroscopic phenomena. In the current framework, an unsteady coolant mixing experiment carried out in the Rossendorf coolant mixing test facility is simulated using the three-dimensional porous media capabilities of the thermal-hydraulic system CATHARE code. The current study allows highlighting the current capabilities of these codes and their suitability for reproducing the main phenomena occurring during asymmetric transient natural circulation mixing conditions.

The injection nozzle of an electro-hydraulic injector is being opened and closed by movement of a injector's needle which is balanced by pressure at the nozzle seat and at the needle control chamber, at the opposite end of the needle. In this study, the effects of needle movement in a piezo-driven injector on unsteady cavitating flows behavior inside nozzle were investigated by cavitation numerical model based on the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. Aimed at simulating the 3-D two-phase flow behavior, the three dimensional geometry model along the central cross-section regarding of one injection hole with real design data of a piezo-driven diesel injector has been used to simulate the cavitating flows for injection time by at fully transient simulation with cavitation model. The cavitation model incorporates many of the fundamental physical processes assumed to take place in cavitating flows. The simulations performed were both fully transient and 'pseudo' steady state, even if under steady state boundary conditions. As this research results, we found that it could analyze the effect the pressure drop to the sudden acceleration of fuel, which is due to the fastest response of needle, on the degree of cavitation existed in piezo-driven injector nozzle.

The natural convection from an inclined ice flat plate immersed in cold water near its density maximum is studied numerically. Finite difference analysis has been performed for the heat and momentum transfer with respect to various inclined angles and ambient water temperatures. The results of the analysis are presented for ambient water temperatures, 1.0deg. C. leq. T/sub .inf./.leq. 15.0deg. C and the inclined anales from 0deg to 60deg. They include velocity profiles, temperature profiles, melting velocities, and mean Nusselt numbers for entire flow fields, Generally, in the range of 0deg. C .leq.theta. .leq. 60.deg. C, the results show three distinct flow regimes, In the range of 1.0 deg. C .leq. T/sub .inf./ .leq. 4.6 .deg. C, the greatest mean Nuselt number exists about 3.0deg. C. In the range of 5.7deg. C .leq. T/sub .inf./ .leq. 15.0deg. C, mean Nuselt number increases as ambient water temperature increases. Also, the mean Nuselt number decreases as the inclined angle increases. This theoretical results are compared with previous experimental ones and multiple steady state ones.

The direct extrusion with porthole die can produce condenser tube which has the competitive power in costs and qualities compared with the existing conform extrusion. In general, porthole die extrusion has a great advantage in the forming that produces the hollow sections difficult to produce by conventional extrusion with a mandrel on the stem. Especially, condenser tube manufactured by porthole die belongs to sophisticated part and demands tighter dimension tolerance and higher surface finish than any other part. In order to confirm the general of porthole die extrusion, we perform the 3D FE analysis of hot porthole extrusion in non-steady state by using DEFORM 3D and investigate a pattern of elastic deformation for porthole die through the stress analysis using ANSYS 5.5 during extrusion process.
General classes of boundary-pressure-driven flows of incompressible Newtonian fluids in threedimensional (3D) channels and in 3D pipes with known steady laminar realizations are investigated respectively. The characteristic physical and geometrical quantities of the flows are subsumed in the kinetic Reynolds number Re and a parameter $\psi$, which involves the energetic ratio and the directions of the boundary-driven part and the pressure-driven part of the laminar flow. The solution of non-stationary dimension-free Navier-Stokes equations is sought in the form $\underline{u}=u_{L}+U,\;where\;u_{L}$ is the scaled laminar velocity and periodical conditions are prescribed for U in the unbounded directions. The objects of our numerical investigations are autonomous systems (S) of ordinary differential equations for the time-dependent coefficients of the spatial Stokes eigenfunction, where these systems (S) were received by application of the Galerkin-method to the dimension-free Navier-Stokes equations for u.

Three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of flow around a hipped-roof building representative of UK inland conditions are conducted. Unsteady simulations are performed using three variations of the k-ϵ RANS turbulence model namely, the Standard, Realizable, and RNG models, and their predictive capability is measured against current European building standards. External pressure coefficients and wind loading are found through the BS 6399-2:1997 standard (obsolete) and the current European standards (BS EN 1991-1-4:2005 and A1:20101). The current European standard provides a more conservative wind loading estimate compared to its predecessor and the k-ϵ RNG model falls within 15% of the value predicted by the current standard. Surface shear stream-traces and Q-criterion were used to analyze the flow physics for each model. The RNG model predicts immediate flow separation leading to the creation of vortical structures on the hipped-roof along with a larger separation region. It is observed that the Realizable model predicts the side vortex to be a result of both the horseshoe vortex and the flow deflected off it. These model-specific aerodynamic features present the most disparity between building standards at leeward roof locations. Finally, pedestrian comfort and safety criteria are studied where the k-ϵ Standard model predicts the most ideal pedestrian conditions and the Realizable model yields the most conservative levels.
The current emission regulations, US Tier-4 and EU Stage-V, are only able to satisfy the regulations when all currently mass-produced emission reduction technologies such as EGR, DOC, DPF, and SCR are applied. Therefore, in this study, for the application of the Urea-SCR system to non-road diesel engines, the database was established by measuring the NO, NO2 concentration and calculating the NO2/NOx ratio based on the catalyst temperature and exhaust mass flow rate. Also, based on the measured NO2/NOx ratio data, a mathematical model was proposed to predict the NO2/NOx ratio at SCR catalyst, and the suitability of the model was verified through steady-state and transient mode. As a result of comparing the NO2/NOx ratio measured at the DOC outlet under the steady-state condition to two model values separately, the R2 was 0.9811 for the 3D map model and 0.9303 for the mathematical model. And in the case of the NO2/NOx ratio measured at the DPF outlet, the R2 was 0.9797 for the 3D map model and 0.935 for the mathematical model. It was confirmed that the R2 with the model value of the 3D Map of the mathematical model in the transient mode is 0.957, which shows high reliability.
The structural analysis of a reactor coolant pump(RCP) of a nuclear power plant is very important for the safety assessment of the plant. Accurate boundary conditions for the heat transfer coefficient are required for reliable thermal stress analysis of the pump casing, especially in transient operations of the pump since the coolant properties are largely dependent on operational conditions. In the present study, a 3D mixed flow type coolant pump was modeled from the RCP drawings and analyzed in the steady state and number of transient flow conditions by using a commercial code STAR-CD. From the result of the computation, it is seen that the average heat transfer coefficients for the cases considered are found to be the suggested values of the manufacturer, Westinghouse Energy System. The unevenness in local heat transfer coefficients, however, is found to be considerable so that the use of average heat transfer coefficients in all boundaries might not give reliable thermal stress predictions.
The jet pump is being used in many fields for several purposes because of its simple construction and easy operation. The characteristics of the geometrical variables, pressure gradient and velocity distribution of the jet pump are studied using the CFD technique. The flow calculations through a bended nozzle. a mixing chamber and a venturi are presented and phenomenological aspects are discussed. This study solve 3-D steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using the Iterative time marching scheme. The governing equations are differenced with 1st-order accurate backward difference scheme for the time derivatives and 3rd-order accurate QUICK scheme for the convective terms. The Mark-and-cell concept was applied efficiently to solve continuity equation, which is differenced 2nd-order accurate central differenced scheme. The 4th-order artificial damping is added to the continuity equation for numerical stability. A O-type of grid system is generated inside a nozzle and venturi of the jet pump. It has concluded that the results of present study properly agree with physical flow phenomena.
