The one-dimensional (1D) finite-difference method (FDM) with Abbott-Ionescu scheme and the two-dimensional (2D) finite-volume method (FVM) with an approximate Riemann solver (Osher scheme) for unsteady flow calculation in river are described. The two models have been applied to several problems including flow in a straight channel, flow in a slightly meandering channel and a flow in a meandering channel. The uniform rectangular channel was employed for the purpose of comparing results. A comparison is made between the results of computation on 1D and 2D flows including straight channel, slightly meandering channel and meandering channel application. The implementation of the finite-volume method allows complex boundary geometry represented. Agreement between FVM and FDM results regarding the discharge and stage is considered very satisfactory in straight channel application. It was concluded that a 1D analysis is sufficient if the channel is prismatic and remains straight. For curved (meandering) channels, a 2D or 3D model must be used in order to model the flow accurately.
The microchannel heat sink is promising heat dissipation method for high heat flux source. Contrary to conventional circular channel, MEMS based microchannel had rectangular or trapezoidal cross-sectional shape. In our study, we conducted three dimensional conjugate heat transfer calculation for rectangular shape microchannel. First, we simulated that channel was completely drained with known heating power. As a result we obtained calibration line, which indicates heat loss was function of temperature. Second, we simulated single phase heat transfer with various mass flux, 100-400 $kg/m^2s$. In conclusion, the single phase test verified that the present heat loss evaluation method is applicable to micro scale heat transfer devices. Heat fluxes from each side wall shows difference due to non-uniform heating. However those ratios were correlated with supplied total heat. Finally, we proposed effective area correction factor to evaluate appropriate heat flux.

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effects of using various shapes of turbulence promoter on the heat-transfer enhancement of 2-D and 3-D arrays of rectangular modules in a rectangular channel for design of noiseless and low-powered cooling fan in the electronic systems. Measurements of heat/mass transfer coefficients were made using a naphthalene sublimation technique, and the friction factors were measured for Reynolds numbers in the range$3.3{\time}10^3$~$1.6{\time}10^4$. Flow visualization was peformed by oil-film method. It was found that heat transfer and pressure drop increased remarkably due to the existence of the promoter. The results of the performance evaluation based on equal pumping power were showed that substantial heat-transfer enhancement was obtained at low Reynolds number range by use of a turbulence promoter.
Dynamic behavior of immiscible gas bubble attached to the wall in channel flow plays very important role in many engineering applications. Special attention has been paid to micro direct methanol fuel cell(${\mu}$DMFC) where surface tension becomes dominant factor with minor gravitational effect due to its reduced size. Therefore, displacement of $CO_2$ bubble generating on a cathode side in ${\mu}$DMFC can be very difficult and efficient removal of $CO_2$ bubbles will affect the overall machine performance considerably. We have focused our efforts on studying the dynamic behavior of immiscible bubble attached to the one side of the wall on 2D rectangular channel subject to external shear flow. We used Level Contour Reconstruction Method(LCRM) which is the simplified version of front tracking method to track the bubble interface motion. Effects of Reynolds number, Weber number, advancing/receding contact angle and property ratio on bubble detachment characteristic has been numerically identified.

Experimental and numerical analysis on the heat transfer behaviors and the associated frictional loss in a rectangular channel with two inclined perforated baffles($\;5^{\circ}$) mounted on the bottom plate has been systematically performed. The parametric effects of perforated baffles (3, 6, 9 holes) and flow Reynolds number on heat transfer characteristics of the heated target surface are explored. A combination of two baffles of same overall size was considered and the flow Reynolds number for this study is varied between 28,900 and 61,800. Comparisons of the experimental data with the numerical results by commercial code CFX 5.7 are made. As for the investigation of heat transfer behaviors on local Nusselt number with the two baffles installed at $x/D_h=0.8\;and\;x/D_h=8.0$, it is evident that there exist an optimum perforation density to maximize heat transfer coefficients; i.e., the maximum Nusselt number decreases with increasing number of holes.

We demonstrate rotationally invariant space-time (ST) trellis codes with a 4-D rectangular signal constellation for data transmission over fading channels using two transmit antennas. The rotational invariance is a good property to have that may alleviate the task of the carrier phase tracking circuit in the receiver. The transmitted data stream is segmented into eight bit blocks and quadrature amplitude modulated using a 256 point 4-D signal constellation whose 2-D constituent constellation is a 16 point square constellation doubly partitioned. The 4-D signal constellation is simply the Cartesian product of the 2-D signal constellation with it-self and has 32 subsets. The partition is performed on one side into four subsets A, B, C, and D with increased minimum-squared Euclidian distance, and on the other side into four rings, where each ring includes four points of equal energy. We propose both linear and nonlinear ST trellis codes and perform simulations using an appropriate multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model. The 4-D ST codes constructed here demonstrate about the same frame error rate (FER) performance as their 2-D counterparts, having however the added value of rotational invariance.

Numerical analysis was applied to a simplified two-dimensional Ondol heating model which consists of heating space on the top of it along with radiant and convective heating floor panel, flue channel in the midway and rectangular underground soil region at the bottom. These three components constitute a system thermally coupled at the top and bottom interfaces of the flue channel. Investigated in the present paper are effects with variations of the Reynolds numbers of 100, 200, and 300, Grashof numbers of $0.1{\times}10^6$ and $0.3{\times}10^6$ and aspect ratios of 15 and 20 on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of two-dimensional Ondol heating model by computer simulation.

In this present paper, a comprehensive drain current model incorporating the effects of channel length modulation has been presented for multi-layered gate material engineered trapezoidal recessed channel (MLGME-TRC) MOSFET and the expression for linearity performance metrics, i.e. higher order transconductance coefficients: $g_{m1}$, $g_{m2}$, $g_{m3}$, and figure-of-merit (FOM) metrics; $V_{IP2}$, $V_{IP3}$, IIP3 and 1-dB compression point, has been obtained. It is shown that, the incorporation of multi-layered architecture on gate material engineered trapezoidal recessed channel (GME-TRC) MOSFET leads to improved linearity performance in comparison to its conventional counterparts trapezoidal recessed channel (TRC) and rectangular recessed channel (RRC) MOSFETs, proving its efficiency for low-noise applications and future ULSI production. The impact of various structural parameters such as variation of work function, substrate doping and source/drain junction depth ($X_j$) or negative junction depth (NJD) have been examined for GME-TRC MOSFET and compared its effectiveness with MLGME-TRC MOSFET. The results obtained from proposed model are verified with simulated and experimental results. A good agreement between the results is obtained, thus validating the model.

In this paper, we compare the performance of initial timing acquisition in direct sequence ultra-wideband(DS-UWB) systems with different transmit pulse shaping filters through extensive computer simulations. Simulation results show that the timing acquisition performance of the DS-UWB system, whose chip rate is 1.32 Gchip/s, employing a rectangular transmit filter is similar to that employing a square root raised cosine(SRRC) filter with an interpolation factor of 4 in the realistic UWB channels(CM1 and CM3) as well as the additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) channel. Additionally, we present both a 24-parallel digital correlator structure and a 24-parallel processing searcher operating at a 55 MHz system clock, and then briefly discuss the initial timing acquisition procedure. Because we can adopt an 1.32 Gsample/s digital-to-analog(D/A) converter and an 1.32 Gsample/s analog-to-digital(AID) converter in the DS-UWB system by employing the rectangular transmit filter, we have a realistic solution for the DS-UWB chipset development.
The flow characteristics of a NACA0012 airfoil was investigated in rectangular water circulating channel. The flow patterns around an airfoil at various angles of attack between $0^{\circ}\;and\;30^{\circ}\;at\;Re=1.91{\times}104$ were visualized and measured with 2-D PIV system and laser sheet illumination. Flow behaviors such as velocity distribution, kinetic energy and flow separation etc. around an airfoil were obtained by means of 2-D PIV system. The behaviors show the difference of flow pattern clearly and separation phenomena become more active with increasing angle of attack.
