Modeling of coupled liquid-gas-solid three-phase processes due to fluid injection

  • A coupled liquid-gas-solid three-phase model, linking two numerical codes (TOUGH2/EOS3 and $FLAC^{3D}$), was firstly established and validated by simulating an in-situ air flow test in Essen. Then the coupled model was employed to investigate responses of multiphase flow and soil skeleton deformation to compressed air or freshwater injection using the same simulation conditions in an aquifer of Tianjin, China. The simulation results show that with injecting pressurized fluids, the vertical effective stress in some area decreases owing to the pore pressure increasing, an expansion of soil skeleton appears, and land uplift occurs due to support actions from lower deformed soils. After fluids injection stops, soil deformation decreases overall due to injecting fluids dissipating. With the same applied pressure, changes in multiphase flow and geo-mechanical deformation caused by compressed air injection are relatively greater than those by freshwater injection. Furthermore, the expansion of soil skeleton induced by compressed air injection transfers upward and laterally continuously with time, while during and after freshwater injection, this expansion reaches rapidly a quasi-steady state. These differences induced by two fluids injection are mainly because air could spread upward and laterally easily for its lower density and phase state transition appears for compressed air injection.

  • In order to investigate the influence of changes in the thermal properties of solid combustibles on thermal decomposition, a series of solid pyrolysis experiments were performed using a cone calorimeter specified in KS F ISO 5660-1. In the present study, Poly Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA) which does not produce Char during pyrolysis process was used as solid fuel. Results obtained from cone calorimeter experiments were compared to ones obtained from numerical analysis of Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) 1D pyrolysis model adopted with thermal properties of solid fuel as input parameters. Comparisons between experimentally calculated and model-predicted mass loss rate were then made to elucidate the effect of changes in the thermal properties on pyrolysis of PMMA.

  • A practical modeling approach has been proposed in this study to better understand the behavior of penetration grouting which is normally applied to the jointed rock masses to increase the bearing capacity and to reduce the ground water flow into the tunnel. Based on Bingham model together with a steady-state flow of the grout, penetration model is simulated in the commercial package called UDEC and, injection pressure as well as joint thickness are found to be the main parameters to determine the range of grout spread. Another numerical model on fracturing grouting is also suggested and, in this case, the tensile strength as well as cohesion of the rock masses are proven to be the major factors to decide the fracturing mechanism of the rock masses. The reinforcement effect of the grout-reinforced rock masses is calculated from the suggested algorithm on orthotropic material model and it is found that the directional stiffness of reinforced rock masses is increased up to 3 to 4 times compared with original jointed rock masses. Future work will be concentrated on the water control around the tunnel by the grout injection and a model test will also be performed to verify the suggested methods developed in this study.

  • In this research we present a method to reconstruct the casting flow simulation result as a 3D model and visualize it on a VR display. First, numerical analysis of heat flow is performed using an existing commercial CAE simulation software. In this process the shape of the original design model is approximated to a regular rectangular grid. The filling ratio and temperature of each voxel are recorded iteratively by predefined number of steps starting from pouring the melted metal into a mold until it is entirely filled. Next we reconstruct the casting by voxels using the simulation result as an input. The color of voxel is determined by mapping the colors to temperature and filling ratio at each step as the flow proceeds. The reconstructed model is visualized on the Projection Table which is one of horizontal-type VR display. It provides active stereoscopic images.

  • A 3-D numerical model, which could demonstrate the static and dynamic responses of a curved bridge more precisely with the moving vehicles, was developed The dynamic response induced by the centrifugal rolling motion of vehicle was identified according to the variations of the partial grade and the curvature of the slab. Dynamic characteristics of the curved bridge with the moving vehicle were analyzed under the condition of support types and two different support systems. Parametric studies were conducted to compare the efficiency of load distribution in the curved bridge. In general, while the vehicle was crossing the curved bridge, negative reaction occurred in the inside of the girder. The final result showed that the support system located outside the girder was more advantageous than other systems, and the characteristics of load distributions differed from the others in the various conditions of support systems.

A Study on the Development of Performance Evaluation Method for the Stormwater Treatment Wetland (비점오염관리를 위한 강우유출수 처리습지의 성능평가방법 개발)

  • The performance of the stormwater wetlands can be significantly influenced by antecedent stormwater in storage at the commencement of a stormevent. As inflows are intermittent and stochastic in nature, the evaluation of the treatment efficiency of a stormwater wetland should be considered by runoff capture and water treatment characteristics during interevent periods. In this study, analytical probabilistic model is applied to identity runoff capture rate and treatment efficiency of the stormwater wetland. To achieve this, continuous rainfall data recorded in Busan for 31 years has been analyzed to derive the runoff capture rate, and 1st order kinetic decay constants ($k_V$, 1/d) are calculated from regression analysis to identify pollutants removal during interevent periods. The results show that about 60.9% of annual average runoff is captured through the stormwater wetland. The annual average treatment efficiencies of SS, BOD, COD, TN and TP is about 11.4, 8.9, 9.8, 4.3 and 9.6%, respectively. The analytical model has been compared with the numerical model and it shows that analytical model is valid. Performance evaluation methods developed in this study has the advantages of considering characteristics of rainfall-runoff, facility type and pollutant removal.

Hemodynamic Characteristics Affecting Restenosis after Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty with Stenting in the Angulated Coronary Stenosis

  • Backgrounds: The present study in angulated coronary stenosis was to evaluate the influence of velocity and wall shear stress (WSS) on coronary atherosclerosis, the changes of hemodynamic indices following coronary stenting, as well as their effect of evolving in-stent restenosis using human in vivo hemodynamic parameters and computed simulation quantitatively and qualitatively. Methods: Initial and follow-up coronary angiographies in the patients with angulated coronary stenosis were performed (n=80). Optimal coronary stenting in angulated coronary stenosis had two models: < 50 % angle changed(model 1, n=43), > 50% angle changed group (model 2, n=37) according to percent change of vascular angle between pre- and post-intracoronary stenting. Flow-velocity wave obtained from in vivo intracoronary Doppler study data was used for in vitro numerical simulation. Spatial and temporal patterns of velocity vector and recirculation area were drawn throughout the selected segment of coronary models. WSS of pre/post-intracoronary stenting were calculated from three-dimensional computer simulation. Results: Follow-up coronary angiogram demonstrated significant difference in the percent of diameter stenosis between two groups (group 1: $40.3{\pm}30.2$ vs. group 2: $25.5{\pm}22.5%$, p<0.05). Negative WSS area on 3D simulation, which is consistent with re-circulation area of velocity vector, was noted on the inner wall of post-stenotic area before stenting. The negative WSS was disappeared after stenting. High spatial and temporal WSS before stenting fell into within physiologic WSS after stenting. This finding was prominent in Model 2 (p<0.01) Conclusions: The present study suggests that hemodynamic forces exerted by pulsatile coronary circulation termed as WSS might affect on the evolution of atherosclerosis within the angulated vascular curvature. Moreover, geometric change, such as angular difference between pre / post-intracoronary stenting might give proper information of optimal hemodynamic charateristics for vascular repair after stenting.

Numerical Analysis of Four Circular Columns in Square Array and Wave Interaction (파랑과 정사각형 배열의 원형 기둥 구조물의 상호작용 수치해석)

  • Accurate prediction of wave-structure interactions is important in the safety and design cost effectiveness of fixed and floating offshore structures exposed to extreme environmental conditions. In this study, regular waves and circular column structure interactions for four circular columns in regular waves are analyzed. To simulate 3D two-phase flow, open source computational fluid dynamics libraries, called OpenFOAM, were used. When the four circular columns are arranged in a square array, the interactions according to the incident slopes of the regular waves are analyzed. The wave run-up in the circular column surface was compared according to the slope of the incident wave. It was confirmed that high amplitude waves are generated between the circular columns due to the interaction between the circular column and the incident wave. It is expected that this analytical result will be used as the basic data of the study on the air gap due to the interaction between the structure and incident wave.

  • In case of the Soil Nail System applied to a slope, effects of vibrations from blasting, earthquake and creep of long term behaviors cause reductions of adhesion between grout and soil-nail. There are some reports of nail's pull-out failure by those reasons. In this paper it is suggested that the Cone Nailing System is enable to diminish effects of vibrations and creep. In this study on Cone Nailing System, the cones are installed to each nail by 2m. By such installing cones, the adhesion between nail and grout will increase and the long term creep behavior will decrease. In this study, the centrifuge test is performed to understand the behaviors of the Cone Nail System. For the centrifuge test, the soil tank is 52cm in width, 17cm in length and 35cm in height. In comparison with general soil nail, the centrifuge test of general soil nail(without cone) is performed equally. Additionally, the interface between cone nail and soil through the pull-out test is applied to FLAC 2D version 3.3. and the evaluation of application for the Cone Nail System in slope is performed.

  • Automatic washing machines have been improved and popularized steadily since the first electric washing machine was produced in the early 1900's. Appliance industry has tried to obtain the performance of washing machine with large capacity, high energy efficiency, low vibration and low noise levels. As the installation peace of a washer becomes closer to the living space, vibration and noise problems become more important challenges. In general, a washing machine has four legs to support its body. Four legs of the washing machine should be attached on a floor. If not so, it may cause severe vibration or walking in the spin-drying process. Unfortunately, the floor of an ordinary house is bumpy in general, and the consumers will not accept bolting washing machines to a foundation; moreover, sometimes they move the location of their washing machines to utility rooms or bath rooms or kitchens and don't care for leveling the legs exactly. In this study, we devise an auto-leg system that prevents the occurrence of abnormal vibration and walking of washing machines. It is simply composed of a spring and a friction damper. Some experiments are implemented to show the dynamic characteristics of the three-dimensional auto-legged washing machine model that is located on the even or uneven ground. A spring parameter is optimized to adjust the length of the auto-leg system automatically up to 10 mm irregularity, and the friction damper is designed to decrease a resonance induced by the spring of the auto-leg system. Some numerical results show that placing the proposed auto-leg system in a washing machine makes good performance with low vibration, as well as low noise, regardless of the unevenness of the floor.
