  • Novel method to calculate flux linkage for 3-D finite element analysis is proposed. It does not require any integral path if the current direction in a coil is known. The flux linkage can be calculated very easily using simple volume based integration. The current direction is calculated based on the recently developed technique by the authors. The novel method for flux linkage calculation is verified by applying to a very complicated deflection yoke coil. The simulation result is compared to the experimental one. From the simulation, it is shown that the proposed method is very accurate and effective to calculate the flux linkage of a coil.

  • The conformation of synthetic oligosaccharide can be elucidated by employing molecular modeling and highfield proton NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy. Information with respect to the composition and configuration of saccharide residues and the sequence and linkage positions of the oligosaccharide can be obtained by employing a variety of one- and two-dimensional NMR techniques and molecular modeling. These techniques are also useful in establishing the solution conformation of the oligosaccharide moiety. This study is focused on the elucidation of linkage positions of synthetic trisaccharides, Gal(β1-4)Glc(β1-3)Glc, Gal(β1-4)Glc(β1-4)Glc and Gal(β1-4)Glc(β1-6)Glc.

  • This paper presents a flux-weakening control algorithm for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drives that reflects the magnitude of the characteristic current. A stator flux linkage observer is utilized to calculate the varying ratio of permanent magnet(PM) flux linkage. The characteristic current magnitude is indirectly calculated using the ratio of the calculated PM flux linkage. The calculated PM flux linkage is used to determine the application of Maximum Torque Per Voltage (MTPV) control for the IPMSM(Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) through a 3D Look-Up Table(LUT). The proposed flux-weakening control method is validated through simulations.

  • This paper presents the efficient 2-D linear brake analysis model which can compensate the lateral leakage flux by changingng the airgap length and magneto-motive force(MMF). The linkage flux of the 2-D analysis is larger than that of 3-D analysis. This is caused by the assumption in 2-D analysis that geometric and physical values are constant along the perpendicular direction(z) to the analysis region. The equivalent MMF have been calculated from the linkage flux difference between the 2-D and 3-D analyses which are performed at zero velocity. The performances of the linear brake have been analyzed effectively by using the compensated 2-D models without using 3-D FEM.

  • Cereal $\beta$-glucans, linked essentially by mixed $\beta$-(1,4/1,3) glycosidic bonds, were extracted, purified, and structurally identified. Previously chemical structure of barley $\beta$-glucans was characterized from 3 varieties of 'Gang', 'Ohl', and 'Gwangan', and the (1,4)/(1,3) linkage ratio of the $\beta$-glucans was identical. In this study, $\beta$-glucans from 1 barley ('Chal') and 3 oat ('Ohl', 'Samhan', and 'Donghan') varieties were structurally scrutinized, and the linkage pattern of total 7 cereal $\beta$-glucans was compared. The amount of 2 major 3-O-$\beta$-cellobiosyl-D-glucose (DP3) and 3-O-$\beta$-cellotriosyl-D-glucose (DP4) from barley and oat accounted for only 66.6-73.3 and 68.12-81.89% of water-extractable $\beta$-glucan fractions, and the (1,4)/(1,3) linkage ratios of both barley and oat $\beta$-glucans were within very narrow range of 2.27-2.31 and 2.38-2.39, respectively, among the cultivars tested. Structural difference in the cereal $\beta$-glucans was evident when DP3:DP4 ratio in the $\beta$-glucan structure was compared. As a result, this ratio was significantly greater for barley $\beta$-glucan (2.26-2.74) than for oat (1.54-1.66). Chal-B had the greatest DP3 to DP4 ratio among the samples, which in turn reflected the least amount of (1,4)-linkages.

  • It's necessary to develope a facile methodology forming ${\alpha}$-altropyranosidic linkage, for the synthesis of trisaccharide repeating unit of O-antigenic part of Campylobacter jejuni gram negative bacteria. In this paper, the effective synthesis of disaccharides containing ${\alpha}$-altropyranosidic linkage by 1,2-trans glycosidation of allal derivatives was discussed. 4, 6-O-Benzylidene-3-O-(t-butyldimethylsilyl)-D-allal was treated with DMDO (3,3-dimethy ldioxirane) to yield 1,2-anhydro-4, 6-O-benzylidene-3-O-(t-butyldimethylsilyl)-${\beta}$-D-altropyranose. The reaction of 1,2-anhydro-4, 6-O-benzylidene-3-O-(t-butyldimethylsilyl)-${\beta}$-D-altropyranose with allyl alcohol gave allyl 4, 6-O-benzylidene-3-(t-butyldimethylsilyl)-${\alpha}$-D-altropyranoside quantitatively, and reactions with glucals were also successful to prepare ${\alpha}$-altropyranosodic disaccharides. It is convinced that 1,2-trans glycosidation of allal derivatives should be an attractive choice for preparing oligosaccharides containing ${\alpha}$-altropyranosidic linkages.

  • This study was carried out to construct mapping population and to evaluate the methods involved, including polymorphic DNA marker system and appropriate statistical analysis. As an initial step to establish chicken genome mapping project, White Leghorn (WL) and Korean Ogol chicken (KOC) were used for generating backcross population. From 8 initial parents, total 280 backcross progenies were obtained and 40 were used for genotyping and linkage analysis. For development of novel polymorphic markers for KOC, Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers specific for this chicken line were generated. Also included in this study were six microsatellite markers from East Lansing map as reference loci. For segregation analysis, 15 RAPD markers and 6 microsatellites were used to genotype the backcross population. Among the RAPD markers that we developed, 2 pairs of markers were identified to be linked and another 4 RAPD markers showed linkage with microsatellites of known map. In summary, this study showed that our backcross population generated from the mating of KOC to WL serves as a valuable genetic resource for genotyping. Furthermore, RAPD markers are proved to be valuable in linkage mapping analysis.

  • Although the genetic basis for bone mineral density (BMD) has been studied by many groups so far, genes responsible for this complex trait has not been completely revealed. In order to localize quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for BMD variation in Asian population, the study was designed using a group of Mongolian population, a genetically closed population with a homogeneous lifestyle. BMD was measured at the left and right wrists and ankles using DEXA in 1,082 participants from 142 families. Genotyping of 13 polymorphic microsatellite markers on chromosome 13 (average spacing 8-9 cM) and two-point and multipoint linkage analysis were performed. In two-point linkage analysis, we identified two markers, D13S175 (6.03 cM) and D13S265 (68.73 cM) that had LOD scores greater than 1 for left ankle (LOD=2.09, LOD=1.49, respectively). We also found a marker D13S175 (6.03 cM) with a high LOD for left wrist (LOD=1.49) and the markers D13S265 (68.73 cM) and D13S217 (17.21 cM) for the right wrist (LOD= 1.82, LOD= 1.62, respectively). Among these significant marker regions, only two regions at 17 cM (13p11) and 65 cM (13q21) for the right wrist overlapped with major QTLs reported in following multipoint linkage analysis (LOD= 1.7549, LOD=1.4462, respectively). This study provides the possible evidence of the presence of QTLs affecting right wrist BMD in Mongolian populations on 13p11 and 13q21. Modest evidence was also found for genes affecting left ankle and left wrist BMD on 13p13.

  • The development of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is bringing new innovations to various fields such as health care, architecture, and fashion. 3D printing can be manufactured to suit the size of the consumer's body, modify the design to meet their tastes, and produce small quantities of various products. Therefore, 3D printing in the field of fashion has great potential. The purpose of this study was to investigate various application models of 3D printing for fashion design and analyze their characteristics after developing the fashion garment samples. First, the background of 3D printing was reviewed then, fashion designed by a 3D printing application was analyzed. As a result, four types of 3D printing applications were developed: object-attached, linkage, kinematics, and assembly. The object-attached type was the method of printing 3D material as an object in the intended shape and form and was attached to the garment by sewing. The linkage type referred to printing 3D material in small pieces of certain shapes that could be linked. The kinematics type was structures with hinges that could flex to fit the human body. The assembly type referred to developing 3D materials in female and male pieces such as nuts and bolts. By providing the advantages, disadvantages, trial-and-errors, and challenges of the 3D printing fashion design process, this study contributes to the effective applications and possibilities of future design.

  • The author examined the relationship of two markers, D5S39(p105-153Ra), D5S76(p105-599Ha) of chromosome 5 and $D_2$, $D_3$ receptor genes in a Korean schizophrenic pedigree using polymerase chain reaction(PCR). The results were as follows : 1) On D5S39 locus, 5 different alleles(224/226 bp : 4 cases, 218/226 bp : 3 cases, 222/226 bp : 3 cases, 218/230 bp : 1 case, 222/224 bp : 1 case) were produced. 2) On D5S76 locus, 5 different alleles(102/112 bp : 4 cases, 94/112 bp : 3 cases, 108/112 bp 3 cases, 94/94 bp : 1 case, 102/108 bp 1 case) were produced. 3) On $D_2$ receptor gene, 3 different alleles($A_1A_2$ : 8 cases, $A_1A_1$ : 2 cases, $A_2A_2$ : cases) were produced. 4) On $D_3$ receptor gene, 2 different alleles(1/2 : 7 cases, 1/1 : 5 cases) were produced. The author had not find any specific alleles on all four loci in all pedigree nor any specific alleles in the schizophrenic patients. Though the author has not found absolute relationship between the four loci and the onset of schizophrenia, there still remains the possibilities if the more detailed and elaborated pedigree studies are done.
