This paper discusses an optimization-based approach for the design of a product platform for industrial three-axis linear-type robots, which are widely used for handling objects in manufacturing lines. Since the operational specifications of these robots, such as operation speed, working distance and orientation, weight and shape of loads, etc., will vary for different applications, robotic system vendors must provide various types of robots efficiently and effectively to meet a range of market needs. A promising step toward this goal is the concept of a product platform, in which several key elements are commonly used across a series of products, which can then be customized for individual requirements. However the design of a product platform is more complicated than that of each product, due to the need to optimize the design across many products. This paper proposes an optimization-based fundamental framework toward the design of a product platform for industrial three-axis linear-type robots; this framework allows the solution of a complicated design problem and builds an optimal design method of fundamental features of robot frames that are commonly used for a wide range of robots. In this formulation, some key performance metrics of the robot are estimated by a reducedorder model which is configured with beam theory. A multi-objective optimization problem is formulated to represent the trade-offs among key design parameters using a weighted-sum form for a single product. This formulation is integrated into a mini-max type optimization problem across a series of robots as an optimal design formulation for the product platform. Some case studies of optimal platform design for industrial three-axis linear-type robots are presented to demonstrate the applications of a genetic algorithm to such mathematical models.

The purpose of this paper is the development of guidance algorithm for a mobile robot which is used to acquire the position and state information of the pipe defects such as crack, damage and through hole. The data used for the algorithm is the range data obtained by the range sensor which is based on an optical triangulation method. The sensor, which consists of a laser slit beam and a CCD camera, measures the 3D profile of the pipe's inner surface. After setting the range sensor on the robot, the robot is put into a pipe. While the camera and the LSB sensor part is rotated about the robot axis, a laser slit beam (LSB) is projected onto the inner surface of the pipe and a CCD camera captures the image. From the images the range data is obtained with respect to the sensor coordinate through a series of image processing and applying the sensor matrix. After the data is transformed into the robot coordinate, the position and orientation of the robot should be obtained in order to guide the robot. In addition, analyzing the data, 3D shape of the pipe is constructed and the numerical data for the defects of the pipe can be found. These data will be used for pipe maintenance and service.
An intelligent miniature humanoid robot system is designed and implemented as a platform for researching walking algorithm. The robot system consists of a mechanical robot body, a control system, a sensor system, and a human interface system. The robot has 6 dofs per leg, 3 dofs per arm, and 2 dofs for a neck, so it has total of 20 dofs to have dexterous motion capability. For the control system, a supervisory controller runs on a remote host computer to plan high level robot actions based on the vision sensor data, a main controller implemented with a DSP chip generates walking trajectories for the robot to perform the commanded action, and an auxiliary controller implemented with an FPGA chip controls 20 actuators. The robot has three types of sensors. A two-axis acceleration sensor and eight force sensing resistors for acquiring information on walking status of the robot, and a color CCD camera for acquiring information on the surroundings. As an example of an intelligent robot action, some experiments on playing soccer are performed.

This study proposed a method of testing the stability when selecting gears to reduce the weight of a 3-DOF wrist mechanism for a pick-and-place 3-DOF parallel robot with an increased workspace by using an additional straight axis at its top. We performed SolidWorks® modeling- and ANSYS®-based structural analysis of a pinion gear, which is most vulnerable to the force from a 3-DOF wrist mechanism, to lighten the robot weight for performing various tasks. When the initial analysis results considerably differed from the theoretical values calculated in advance, we checked and identified the errors in the contact conditions or input values. Ultimately, it is believed that the methodology presented in this paper will help in mitigating errors during analysis and determine the accurate values for a lightweight 3-DOF wrist mechanism for a parallel robot with an expanded workspace.

This study developed a human robot master arm, which has a structure similar to the human arm, with the object of taking over human works. The robot arm was structured to reproduce human actions using three axes on each of the shoulder and the wrist based on mechanics, and the actuator of each axis adopted an ordinary DC motor. The servo system of the actuator is a one body type employing an amp for electric power, and it was designed to be small and lightweight for easy installation. We examined the posture control characteristics of the developed robot master arm in order to test its interlocking, continuous notions and reliability.
On this study, an E.E(End-Effector) for the 300 mm wafer transfer robot system is newly suggested. It is a mechanical type with $180^{\circ}$ rotating ranges and is composed of 3-point arms, two plate springs and single-axis DC motor controlled by microchip. To design, relationship between the gripping force and the wafer deformation is analyzed by FEM. By analytic results, the gripping force for 300 mm wafer is confirmed as 255~274 gf. From experimental results on gripping force, repeatable position accuracy and gripping cycle times in a wafer cleaning system, we confirmed that the suggested E.E was well designed to satisfiy on the required performance for 300 mm wafer transfer robot system.

This paper proposes a self-calibration method of robots those are used in industrial assembly lines. The proposed method is a position compensation using laser sensor and vision camera. Because the laser sensor is cross type laser sensor which can scan a horizontal and vertical line, it is efficient way to detect a feature of vehicle and winding shape of vehicle's body. For position compensation of 3-Dimensional axis, we applied block interpolation method. For selecting feature point, pattern matching method is used and 3-D position is selected by Euclidean distance mapping between 462 feature values and evaluated feature point. In order to evaluate the proposed algorithm, experiments are performed in real industrial vehicle assembly line. In results, robot's working point can be displayed 3-D points. These points are used to diagnosis error of position and reselecting working point.

In this paper, we propose a gait generation method for quadruped robots using the xz-axis sway of the quadruped robot, which minimizes the shake of the quadruped robot and maximizes the stability margin. In the proposed method, the gait is generated based on wave gaits and the stability analysis uses the body tilt information of the quadruped robot according to the leg's height of leg. In addition, to reduce the impact on the body caused by the z-axis sway while walking, the proposed method generates the smooth walking movement trajectory with less impact by using Fourier series. Finally, to verify the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed method, we carry out the computer simulations and the real walking experiments with the implemented quadruped robot.

This paper presents a method of grinding and polishing automation of precision die after CNC machining. The method employs a robot system equipped with a pneumatic spindle and a special abrasive film pad. The robote program is automatically generated off-line from a PC and downloaded to robot controller. Position and orientation data for the program is supplied from cutter contact (CC) data of NC machining process. This eliminates separate robot teaching process. This paper aims at practical automation of die finishing process which is very time consuming and suffering from shortage of workpeople. Time loss for changeover from one product to next is eliminated by off-line programming exploiting appropriate NC machining data. Dextrous 6-axis robot with rigid wrist and simple tooling enables the process applicable to larger, rather complex 3 dimensional free surfaces
