  • Fluid transport is a key issue in the development of microfluidic systems. Recently, Myong (2014) has proposed a new concept for droplet transport without external power sources and numerically validated the results for a hypothetical 2D, initially having a hemicylindrical droplet. In this paper, the movement of an actual water droplet, initially having a 3D hemispherical shape, on horizontal hydrophilic/hydrophobic surfaces is simulated using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package, Fluent, with VOF (volume of fluid) method. The results are compared with the 2D analysis of Myong (2014), and the transport mechanism for the actual water droplet is examined based on the numerical results of the time evolution of the droplet shape, as well as the total kinetic, gravitational, surface free and pressure energies inside the droplet.

  • In this paper, the surface settlement resulted from the shallow TBM tunnelling has been numerically simulated. TBM tunnelling is especially used in urban area to avoid serious vibration and noise caused by explosion in NATM. Surface settlement is one of the most important problems encountered in all tunnelling and critical in urban areas. In this study, face vibration of TBM excavation is considered to estimate surface settlement trend according to TBM extrusion. The dynamic excavation forces are calculated by total torque on the TBM cutterhead in mixed-face of soil and weathered rock condition with shallow depth. A 3-dimensional FDM code is employed to simulate TBM tunnelling and mechanical-dynamic coupling analysis is performed. The 3D numerical analysis results showed that dynamic settlement histories and trend of surface settlement successfully. The maximum settlement occurred at the excavation point located at 2.5D behind the face, and the effect of face vibration on the surface settlement was verified in this study.

  • The main object of this study is to analyze mechanical behaviors as anisotropic three-dimensional body under various static loads. This paper presents the applicability of the finite difference method to three dimensional problem of anisotropic body. The finite difference method as applied here is generalized to anisotropic three-dimensional problem of elastic body where the governing differential equations of equilibrium of such bodies are expressed in terms of the displacement u, v, and w in the coordinates axes x, y and z, care being taken to modify the finite difference expressions to satisfy the appropriate boundary conditions. By adopting a new three dimensional finite difference modelling including elimination of pivotal difference points in the case of free boundary condition, the three dimensional problem of anisotropic body was successfully completed. Several numerical results show quick convergence and numerical validity of finite difference technique in three dimensional problem.

  • Numerical models have been widely used to understand the structure of coastal currents and the transport mechanisms in regard to the fate of pollutants. This study focuses on the development of a three-dimensional model of coastal circulation and mass transport. The model was used to calculate coastal currents and temperature distributions of the thermal plume discharged from a power plant. The model results were compared with field-observed data. They showed the relatively good agreements with the data. The model can be used to estimate the currents and its mass transport in coastal waters.

  • The disaster preventing system using vegetation has been growing in the field of coastal engineering in recent years. To analyze wave and flow fields under nonlinear interactions between tsunami and vegetation, the purpose of this study is to evaluate newly-developed 3-D numerical wave tank including energy dissipation by tsunami-vegetation interaction based on existing N-S solver with porous body model. Comparing numerical results using mean drag coefficient and dynamic drag coefficient due to Reynolds number to existing experimental results it is revealed that computed results considering the dynamic drag coefficient are in good agreement with the laboratory test results for time-domain waveform. In addition, the calculated transmission coefficients of solitary waves in various vegetation densities and incident wave heights are also in good agreement with the experimental values. This confirms the validity and effectiveness of the developed 3-D numerical wave tank with the fluid resistance by vegetation.

  • A series of numerical analyses on soft clay ground improved by plastic board drain(PBD) were carried out, in order to investigate the consolidation behavior considering viscosity of the improved ground. The applicability of numerical analyses, in which an elasto-viscoplastic three-dimensional consolidation finite element method is applied in this study, was confirmed through comparison between experimental and analytical results. As the analytical results, consolidation behavior of both settlement and excess pore pressure and effective stress in clay were elucidated. Then secondary consolidation characteristics of improved ground were estimated through compare with results of typical one-dimensional consolidation analysis.

  • Three-dimensional numerical study was carried out to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics of the supersonic grid fins installed on SpaceX Falcon 9. The present three-dimensional flow results were compared to the results by the concept of the unit grid fin previously introduced for more efficient and simpler flow calculations, and the validity of the approach of the unit grid fin were evaluated. The aerodynamic characteristics in supersonic flights Mach 2.8 of SpaceX Falcon 9 with various angle of attacks were also obtained.

  • Wheelset dynamic analysis is a key element to determine the degree of accuracy of railway vehicle dynamics. In this study, a three-dimensional wheelset dynamic analysis is presented in such a way that the precise wheel-rail contact analysis in three-dimension is implemented into the dynamic equations of a wheelset. A numerical procedure that can be used for the analysis of a wheelset dynamics when the wheel-rail two point contact occurs in a cornering maneuver is developed. Numerical solutions of the constraint equations and the dynamics equations of a wheelset are achieved by using Runge-Kutta method. The proposed wheelset dynamic analysis is validated by comparison against results obtained from VI-RAIL analysis.
