BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Low early pregnancy serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25[OH]D) levels can increase gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk, although inconsistent findings related to that association have been reported. This study examined the association of serum vitamin D with GDM and the possible influencers on this association. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study included 259 pregnant women within the Seremban Cohort Study (SECOST). Blood samples at < 14 weeks of gestation were drawn to determine serum 25(OH)D levels. GDM diagnosis was made at 24 to 32 weeks of gestation using a standard procedure. Association between serum vitamin D and GDM was tested using binary logistic regression. RESULTS: Nearly all women (90%) had mild (68.3%) or severe (32.2%) vitamin D deficiency (VDD). Non-GDM women with mild VDD had a significantly higher mean vitamin D intake than GDM women with mild VDD (t = 2.04, p < 0.05). Women with higher early pregnancy serum vitamin D levels had a greater risk of GDM. However, this significant association was only identified among those with a family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and in women with a body mass index indicating overweight or obese status. CONCLUSIONS: The high prevalence of VDD in this sample of pregnant women underscores the need for effective preventive public health strategies. Further investigation of this unexpected association between serum vitamin D level and GDM risk in predominantly VDD pregnant women and the potential effects of adiposity and family history of T2DM on that association is warranted.

Objectives: Insulin resistance (IR) is major cause of type 2 diabetes (T2D), and adipokines (e.g., adiponectin, leptin, and resistin) play an important role in insulin sensitivity. Medicinal plants are frequently used for T2D treatment. This study investigates the effect of Artemisia annua L. (AA) extracts on adipokines in mice with high-fat-diet (HFD)/streptozotocin (STZ)-induced T2D. Methods: We divided 60 mice into 12 groups (n = 5 per group): control, untreated T2D, treated T2D, and 9 other groups. T2D was induced in all groups, except controls, by 8 weeks of HFD and STZ injection. The treated T2D group was administered 250 mg/kg of metformin (MTF), while the nine other groups were treated with 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg of hot-water extract (HWE), cold-water extract (CWE), and alcoholic extract (ALE) of AA (daily oral gavage) along with 250 mg/kg of MTF for 4 weeks. The intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (IPGTT) was performed, and the homeostasis model assessment of adiponectin (HOMA-AD) index and blood glucose and serum insulin, leptin, adiponectin, and resistin levels were measured. Results: Similar to MTF, all three types of AA extracts (HWEs, CWEs, and ALEs) significantly (p < 0.0001) decreased the area under the curve (AUC) of glucose during the IPGTT, the HOMA-AD index, blood glucose levels, and serum insulin, leptin, and resistin levels and increased serum adiponectin levels in the MTF group compared to the T2D group (p < 0.0001). The HWEs affected adipokine release, while the CWEs and ALEs decreased leptin and resistin production. Conclusion: Water and alcoholic AA extracts have an antihyperglycemic and antihyperinsulinemic effect on HFD/STZ diabetic mice. In addition, they decrease IR by reducing leptin and resistin production and increasing adiponectin secretion from adipocytes.
Chitosan membranes crosslinked with glutaraldehayde that contained chiral environment were prepared. The chitosan membranes were characterized using FTIR and swelling index measurements. Their swelling index in water ranged from 100 to 70%, depending on the crosslinking time. The separation of D- and L-isomers of tryptophan was achieved through a pressure driven membrane separation process, using the self-supporting crosslinked chitosan membranes. The chiral separation performance of the membranes depended strongly on the swelling index of the membranes and the separation conditions such as concentration of feed solutions and different operating pressures. Especially when a chitosan membrane with a swelling index of 70% was used, almost complete optical resolution of D- and L-tryptophan was obtained ; enantiomeric excess (ee %) of 97.92% and flux of 2.26 g/㎡$.$h.

This study aims to derive the effect of road traffic noise perception by the visual and aural information through a laboratory experiment. To verify the result more precisely, ME(Magnitude Estimation) and SD(Semantic Differential Method) evaluation on the effect of visual and aural effect were carried out by 43 university students. As the result, up to 10% of psychological reduction effect was shown under the 65dB(A). As the noise level, it was analyzed that the vision affected about 7dB(A) and sound affected 5dB(A). However, if these two are given simultaneously, mainly sound affects to reduce the annoyance of noise and the vision next. Compared with the urban central circumstances, this effect(2dB(A) under 65dB(A) noise) was shown smaller than field test.

This study was designed to evaluate the effects of arthritis and comorbid chronic conditions on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the Korean older population. The study subjects were 2,708 Korean adults aged 65 and older from the $3^{rd}$ Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys data: 1,357 persons with a single chronic condition, such as arthritis, herniations of the intervertebral disc, osteoporosis, asthma, peptic ulcers, stroke, or cataract; 886 persons with arthritis and a second chronic condition described above; and 465 persons with no chronic condition. An analysis of covariance was performed to compare the EQ-5D index among the groups. The effects of arthritis, second chronic condition and their interactions were analyzed by multiple linear regression analysis. The results are as follows. Compared to men with arthritis only, men with stroke only, stroke and arthritis, or cataract and arthritis had a lower age adjusted EQ-5D index. Women with a stroke only, asthma only, cataract only, osteoporosis and arthritis, peptic ulcer and arthritis, stroke and arthritis, or cataract and arthritis had a lower age adjusted EQ-5D index than women with arthritis only. Arthritis and comorbid conditions had additive effects on the HRQol in both genders except for arthritis and stroke in women. In conclusion, comorbid chronic medical conditions in older people with arthritis may reduce the HRQoL in an additive manner.
This paper addresses an indexing scheme capable of efficiently processing range queries in a large-scale trajectory database. After discussing the drawbacks of previous indexing schemes, we propose a new scheme that divides the temporal dimension into multiple time intervals and then, by this interval, builds an index for the line segments. Additionally, a supplementary index is built for the line segments within each time interval. This scheme can make a dramatic improvement in the performance of insert and search operations using a main memory index, particularly for the time interval consisting of the segments taken by those objects which are currently moving or have just completed their movements, as contrast to the previous schemes that store the index totally on the disk. Each time interval index is built as follows: First, the extent of the spatial dimension is divided onto multiple spatial cells to which the line segments are assigned evenly. We use a 2D-tree to maintain information on those cells. Then, for each cell, an additional 3D $R^*$-tree is created on the spatio-temporal space (x, y, t). Such a multi-level indexing strategy can cure the shortcomings of the legacy schemes. Performance results obtained from intensive experiments show that our scheme enhances the performance of retrieve operations by 3$\sim$10 times, with much less storage space.
This paper aim; to develop the National R&D Information Navigation System(NRnDINS) that is convenient and easy to use by the researchers on the basis of information filtering and visualization by converging and integrating the three types of the contents, namely, paper, report and project at the stage of development of the information system An information system is developed by establishing ontology and RDF on the three types of contents, and by applying information filtering and semantic search technology after having created the prototype for the screen by reflecting the user needs analysis and information visualization elements surveyed at the previous stage of information service planning. In this paper, to make the measure for information filtering, R&D navigation index is prosed and implemented, and NRnDINS capable of integrated search of the R&D contents through information visualization is developed. Also, for the testing of the developed system, the preference survey for its design by 1m persons and usability test of the system by 10 users are performed The result of the survey on the preference for the design is affirmative with 85% of the subjects finding it favorable and the composite receptivity is good with the score of 87.2 the results of the usability test. However, it was also found that further development of the personalization functions is needed. It is hoped that the R&D navigation index of the proposed and implemented in this paper would present quantitative objectivity and will induce further development of other information filtering index of contents in the future.

This paper proposes the multidimensioa! nested attribute indexing techniques (MD- NAI) in object-oriented databases using a multidimensional index structure. Since most conventional indexing techniques for object oriented databases use a one-dimensional index stnlcture such as the B-tree, they do not often handle complex qUlTies involving both nested attributes and class hierarchies. We extend a tunable two dimensional class hierachy indexing technique(2D-CHI) for nested attributes. The 2D-CHI is an indexing scheme that deals with the problem of clustering ohjects in a two dimensional domain space that consists of a kev attribute dOI11'lin and a class idmtifier domain for a simple attribute in a class hierachy. In our extended scheme, we construct indexes using multidimensional file organizations that include one class identifier domain per class hierarchy on a path expression that defines the indexed nested attribute. This scheme efficiently suppoI1s queries that involve search conditions on the nested attribute represcnted by an extcnded path expression. An extended path expression is a one in which a class hierarchy can be substituted by an indivisual class or a subclass hierarchy in the class hierarchy.

National R&D programs play an important role in the development of a country in this age of the knowledge economy. Since many numbers of R&D programs compete for limited resources such as national R&D budget, the R&D program evaluation problem is a challenging decision-making problem faced by decision makers that deal with R&D management. In this sense, DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis) has been regarded as one of the most widely accepted methods to measure the relative efficiency of productivity of R&D programs. DEA is a methodology to measure and to evaluate the relative efficiency of a homogeneous set of decision-making units(DMUs) in a process which uses multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. However, the sample of the R&D programs could consist of two or more naturally occurring subsets, thus exhibiting clear signs of heterogeneity such as different objectives. In such situations, the fairness of DEA is limited, for the nature of the relative efficiency of a DMU is likely to be influenced by its membership in a particular subset of the sample. In this study, we propose a methodology AI-DEA(attainment index DEA) allowing for reflecting decision maker's subjective judgement on difference among different subsets of R&D programs which have heterogeneous objectives. This methodology combines AHP and Delphi in order to decide the attainmnet index of each DMU for each outputs, and apply them to DEA model. We illustrate the proposed approach with a pilot evaluation of 13 programs involving 6 different subsets of Korean National R&D programs and compares the results of the original DEA model and AI-DEA model.
In this study was implemented to develop tree stem weight prediction equation of Larix kaempferi in central region by selecting a standard site, taking into account of diameter and position of the local trees. Fifty five sample trees were selected in total. By utilizing actual data of the sample trees, 11 models were compared and analyzed in order to estimate four different kinds of weights which include fresh weight, ovendry outside bark weight, ovendry inside bark weight and merchantable weight. As to estimate its weight, the study has classified its model according to three parameters: DBH, DBH and height, and volume. The optimal model was chosen by comparing the performance of model using the fit index and standard error of estimate and residual distribution. As a result, the formula utilizing DBH (Variable 1) is $W=a+bD+cD^2$ (3) and its fit index was 90~92%. The formula for DBH and height (Variable 2) is $W=aD^bH^C$ (8) and its fit index was 97~98%. In summation, Variable 2 model showed higher fitness than Variable 1 model. Moreover, fit index of formula for total volume and merchantable volume (W=aV) showed high rate of 98~99%, as well as resulting 7.7-17.5 with SEE and 8.0-10.0 with CV(%) which lead to predominately high fitness in conclusion. This study is expected to provide information on weights for single trees and furthermore, to be used as a basic study for weight of stand unit and biomass estimation equations.
