  • A Steady laminar natural convection heat transfer from two isothermal square beams attached to a vertical adiabatic plate has been studied numerically. The results have been obtained for dimensionless beam spacings, $0.5{\le}D/L{\le}3.0$, and for Gr=5000-10000 at ${\phi}_2/{\phi}_1=1.0$. 1. The local Nusselt number from the beam surface is increased with the dimension-less beam spacing D/L. but that of the downward surface of the lower beam is almost same as the D/L increases. And, the local Nusselt number from the upward surface of a lower beam is greatly increased with D/L. 2. The beam spacings of the maximum mean Nusselt number for the downward surface of an upper beam and the upward surface of a lower beam occur at. D/L =2.6 and 2.0 respectively. 3. The beam spacing for the maximum total mean Nusselt number occurs at D/L = 2.6.

The Effects of Ar-ion Bombardment and Annealing of D2O/Zircaloy-4 Surfaces Using XPS and UPS

  • The surface chemistry of D2O dosed Zircaloy-4 (Zry-4) surface followed by Ar-ion bombardment and annealing was studied by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). In the XPS study, Ar-ion bombardment caused decrease of the oxygen on the surface region of Zry-4 and therefore led to change the oxidation states of the zirconium from oxide to metallic form. In addition, oxidation states of zirconium were changed to lower oxidation states of zirconium due to depopulation of oxygen on the surface region by annealing. Up to about 787 K, the bulk oxygen diffused out to the subsurface region and after this temperature, the oxygen on the surface of Zry-4 was depopulated. UPS study showed that the valence band spectrum of the D2O exposed Zry-4 exhibited a dominant peak at around 13 eV and no clear Fermi edge was detected. After stepwise Ar+ sputtering processes, the decrease of the oxygen on the surface of Zry-4 led to suppress the dominant peak around 13 eV, the peak around 9 eV and develop a new peak of the metallic Zr 4d state (20.5-21.0 eV) at the Fermi level.

  • we have proposed a three-dimensional GLE approach to gas-surface reactive scattering, model H + H $${\rightarrow}$H_2/Si(100)-(2$ ${\times}$1) system, and the implementation of 3D GLE method on the hydrogen on silicon surface has been presented. The formalism and algori thm of the 3D GLE are worked properly in the reactive scattering system. The calculated normal mode frequencies of surface vibrations were almost identical to previous harmonic slab calculations. The reaction probabilities were calculated for two energies. The calculations show that a very large amount of energy is transferred in surface in low energy scattering. Three different types of reaction mechanisms has been observed, which can not be shown in flat and rigid surface models. Further work on the reaction mechanisms and calculations of the vibrational and rotation distributions of products is in progress. The results will be reported elsewhere soon.

Segmentation Using Curvature Information of 3D Body Surface for Tight-fit Pattern Making (상반신 밀착패턴 제작을 위한 3차원 인체 표면 곡률기준 분할)

  • It is inevitable to have cutting line to get the 2D pattern from 3D body surface. In this paper the efficiency of curvature plot as a cutting line in the process of flattening 3D surface was investigated. As reference, basic clothing construction line was adopted to divide the 3D surface into small blocks to make the flattening process easy. Female dummy as well as human body were scanned and surface of the upper body was segmented using curvature plot and basic constructing line. 2D tight-fit pattern was developed using three software, the RapidForm 2004, 2C-AN and Yuka CAD. Gap between clothes and body, and the clothing pressure on the body was observed to determine the fit of the clothes. As results, clothes constructed with blocks divided by curvature plot displayed a similar level of tight fit as compared with those by basic construction line. It was found that curvature plot is effective method as a segmentation of the 3D surface even for the actual body which does not have any previous reference line. It is expected that application of curvature plot will be expanded in 3D apparel technology.

  • The non-dimensional convective heat losses from each surface are investigated as a function of the non-dimensional fin length, width and the ratio of upper surface Biot number to bottom surface Biot number (Bi2/Bi1) using the three-dimensional separation of variables method. Heat loss ratio in view of each surface with the variation of Bi2/Bi1 is presented. The variation of the non-dimensioal temperare profile along the fin center line for a thermally asymmetric conditions is also presented.

  • An in-process extraction method of the ground surface roughness is a bottle-neck and essential field in conventional machining process. We define the D.A.R.F(Dimensionless Average Roughness Factor) that has a roughness characteristic of ground surface. D.A.R.F include the absolute average and the standard deviation values which are the analytic parameters of the AE(Acoustic Emission) signal generated during the grinding operation. The theoretical equation between the surface roughness and the D.A.R.F has been derived from the linear regressive analysis and verified its availability through the experimentation on the surface grinding machine.

  • In this study, the surface displacement was investigated according to the various depth of cover when the tunnel excavation equipment was used in a clay soil. For this the laboratory scaled model test was carried out using the soil sample similar to the in-situ conditions. We carried out four tests according to tunnel depth(1.5D, 2.0D, 2.5D, 3.0D). The distribution of impact due to tunnelling was quantitatively analyzed in the three-dimension by measuring the surface displacement. In addition, the pattern of surface displacements was figured out.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to determine the electrical properties of the buccal area using facial surface electromyography (sEMG). Methods : This research was conducted on 44 healthy participants irrespective of their sex. Surface electrodes were attached to the midpoints of three imaginary lines connecting ST4 (Dicang) to ST6 (Jiache), ST4 to SI18 (Quanliao), and ST4 to the center point of SI18 and ST6. Then, the participants were trained in the movement that included a comprehensive action of buccal area. While the participants were performing the motion, sEMG values ($E_1$, $E_2$, $E_3$) and the distance change of the three imaginary lines ($D_1$, $D_2$, $D_3$) were measured. The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS ver. 22.0. Results : Significant differences were observed in the distance changes ($D_1$>$D_3$, $D_2$>$D_3$) and sEMG values ($E_1$<$E_2$<$E_3$). Moreover, there were positive correlations between $D_1$ and $E_1$, $D_2$ and $E_2$. Conclusion : We suggest that the measurement at ST4 to the center point of ST6 and SI18 with this motion would be adequate to check the electrical characteristics of the buccal area.

Adhesion of Bifidobacteria to Caco-2 Cells and in Relation to Cell Surface Hydrophobicity (비피도박테리아의 Caco-2 세포에 대한 부착성과 세포 표면 소수성)

  • The adhesion of 16 bifidobacterial strains, including 10 isolates from Korea infants, to Caco-2 cells and their cell surface hydrophobicity were tested. The results of adhesion and cell surface hydrophobicity of for various bifidobacterial strains were obtained and correlations between adhesion and hydrophobicity were strain-dependent properties. Any correlations between species of tested strains were not observed. Among the tested strains, Bifidobacterim longum D6, B. longum H4, B. thermophilum ATCC 25525, B. suis ATCC 27533, and B. animalis subsp. lactis BB12 had higher adherent properties and B. bifidum B3, B. longum D6, B. longum stronger hydrophobicity, respectively. Due to the strain-dependant correlation between adhesion to Caco-2 cells and cell surface hydrophobicity of bifidobacteria, these results provide a possible method for preliminary selection of bifidobacteria potentially adherent to Caco-2 cells by means of cell surface hydrophobic properties.

  • The heat transfer and flow measurements from a convex curved surface to a circular impinging jet have been made. The flow at the nozzle exit has a fully developed velocity profile. The jet Reynolds number (Re) ranges from 11,000 to 50,000, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance (L/d) from 2 to 10, and the dimensionless surface curvature (d/D) from 0.034 to 0.089. The results show that the stagnation point Nusselt number (N $u_{st}$ ) increases with increasing value of d/D. The maximum Nusselt number at the stagnation point occurs at L/d .ident. 6 to 8 for all Re's and d/D's tested. For larger L/d, N $u_{st}$ dependency on Re is stronger due to an increase of turbulence in the approaching jet as a result of the more active exchange of momentum with a surrounding air. The local Nusselt number decreases monotonically from its maximum value at the stagnation point. However, for L/d=2 and Re=23,000, and for L/d.leq.4 and Re=50,000, the stream wise Nusselt number distributions exhibit secondary maxima at r/d .ident. 2.2. The formation of the secondary maxima is attributed to an increase in the turbulence level resulting from the transition from a laminar to a turbulent boundary layer.ndary layer.
