  • Uplift response of symmetrical circular anchor plates has been evaluated in physical model tests and numerical simulation using Plaxis. The behavior of circular anchor plates during uplift test was studied by experimental data and finite element analyses in loose sand. Validation of the analysis model was also carried out with 50 mm, 75 mm and 100 mm diameter of circular plates in loose sand. Agreement between the uplift responses from the physical model tests and finite element modeling using PLAXIS 2D, based on 100 mm computed maximum displacements was excellent for circular anchor plates. Numerical analysis using circular anchor plates was conducted based on hardening soil model (HSM). The research has showed that the finite element results gives higher than the experimental findings in the loose sand.

  • A CATHENA model for the reactor regulating system is developed and tested independently. A CATHENA plant model is created by combining this model with the reference CATHENA model which has been developed to analyze a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) for the Wolsong 2 generating station. This model is intended to provide a trip coverage analysis capability. The CATHENA reactor regulating system model includes the demand power routine. the light water zone control absorbers, mechanical control absorbers and adjusters. The CATHENA model is tested for steady state at 103% full power. A postulated accident transient (small LOCA) was also tested. The results show that the control routines in CATHENA were set up properly.

  • The aim of this paper is to perform a finite element analysis that will have the ability to predict the seal performance characteristics, such as deformation, contact load and friction and also is to provide a means of potential seal designs, which can reduce the time and cost of designing the performance of the seal. The material property tests of elastomer seal are performed to obtain the hyperelastic properties and The Mooney-Rivlin constants are determined from these test results. A 2D modelling of the seal cross section is performed to simulate the contact behavior between the seal on the piston and the cylinder bore under operation conditions. The deformation behavior, contact load and friction of an elastomer seal is analyzed by a finite element method which performs three analytic phases of interference fit, the variations of pneumatic pressure and piston movement under the operational conditions.

  • The tidal front forming in the Mid-Yellow Sea off Korea, near Tae-An peninsular, is calculated using a 3-D general circulation model(Semtner, 1974) and the concept of mixing rate, an extension of the concept of mixing efficiency proposed by simpson & Hunter(1974). Along the north and south open boundaries, simple radiation conditions are applied. The model is run with the initial state which represents the winter condition. With imposed uniform heating by solar radiation and spatially-different vertical mixing, the model then generated the tidal front comparable to the observed one.

  • A new conception of fundamental tasks in dynamics of the bridge-track-train systems (BTT), with the aim to evaluate moving load's models adequacy, has been developed. The 2D physical models of BTT systems, corresponding to the fundamental tasks, have been worked out taking into account one-way constraints between the moving unsprung masses and the track. A method for deriving the implicit equations of motion, governing vibrations of BTT systems' models, as well as algorithms for numerical integration of these equations, leading to the solutions of high accuracy and relatively short times of simulations, have been also developed. The derived equations and formulated algorithms constitute the basis for numerical simulation of vibrations of the considered systems.

  • In this study, 3-dimensional virtual visualization was performed for a rapid and accurate analysis of sea bottom topography, The visualization was done through the extracted data using the developed program and the generated data using the gridding method. The data extraction program was developed with AutoLISP programming language and this program was able to extract the needed sample bathymetry data from the electronic sea chart systematically as well as effectively. The gridded bathymetry data were generated by the interpolation or extrapolation method from the spatially-irregular sample data. As the result of realization for the 3-dimensional virtual visualization, it was shown a proper feasibility in the analysis of the sea bottom topography to determine the route of submarine cable burial.

  • Recently, optical disk drives are increasingly demanded to have higher speed as well as high information density, especially for applications like CD-ROM drives. To this end, improvement of their optical pick-up structure and control is recognized the very challenging issue. In this paper, the 2-D motion of the pick-up is first analytically modelled to identify the cause and effect of the troublesome cross coupling between auto-focusing and tracking directions. Subsequently, the overall system equations are derived to include the dynamics of the related components in the auto-focusing servo system. While its unmeasurable parameters being estimated by the least square error method, a simple but decent linear model can be obtained within its operating frequency range. To design the high speed and robust positional servo controller, the design specifications are detailed and H$\sub$.inf./ control method is employed based on the simple model. Using the pickup in a commercial 8 fold speed CD-ROM drive as an example, performance of the designed controller is verified by realtime experiments.
