  • The purpose of this study is to provide a fundamental data of earthquake resistant design through the estimation of the response modification factor and nonlinear displacement for moment resisting reinforced concrete frames by linear and nonlinear static analysis. The analysis models are designed in accordance with AIK code and then, estimated the response modification factor and nonlinear displacement of the buildings. The parameters such as story numbers(10, 20, 30), plan ratios(1:1, 1:2) and analysis types(2D, 3D) of building structure are chosen for use in this study. After comparing the results of linear and nonlinear static analysis, the response modification factor is obtained as the product of four factors: ductility factor, strength factor, damping factor and redundancy factor. The response modification factor are close to 3.5 in case of 2 span, 4.3 in case of 3 span and 5.0 in case 4 or more span models regardless number of stories and plan ratios. The nonlinear displacement is evaluated from the ratio of story drift angle(nonlinear drift/linear drift). The ratio of story drift angle increases as story numbers increase and the value varies from 5.85 to 9.34.

  • The necessity of data compression scheme for volume data has been increased because of the increase of data capacity and the amount of network uses. Now we have various kinds of compression schemes, and we can choose one of them depending on the data types, application fields, the preferences, etc. However, the capacity of data which is produced by application scientists has been excessively increased, and the format of most scientific data is 3D volume. For 2D image or 3D moving pictures, many kinds of standards are established and widely used, but for 3D volume data, specially time-varying volume data, it is very difficult to find any applicable compression schemes. In this paper, we present a compression scheme for encoding time-varying volume data. This scheme is aimed to encoding time-varying volume data for visualization. This scheme uses MPEG's I- and P-frame concept for raising compression ratio. Also, it transforms volume data using Daubechies D4 filter before encoding, so that the image quality is better than other wavelet-based compression schemes. This encoding scheme encodes time-varying volume data composed of single precision floating-point data. In addition, this scheme provides the random reconstruction accessibility for an unit, and can be used for compressing large time-varying volume data using correlation between frames while preserving image qualities.

  • In this paper, we propose an improved optical flow algorithm which reduces computational complexity as well as noise level. This algorithm reduces computational time by applying level simplification technique and removes noise by using eigenvectors of objects. Optical flow is one of the accurate algorithms used to generate depth information from two image frames using the vectors which track the motions of pixels. This technique, however, has disadvantage of taking very long computational time because of the pixel-based calculation and can cause some noise problems. The level simplifying technique is applied to reduce the computational time, and the noise is removed by applying optical flow only to the area of having eigenvector, then using the edge image to generate the depth information of background area. Three-dimensional images were created from two-dimensional images using the proposed method which generates the depth information first and then converts into three-dimensional image using the depth information and DIBR(Depth Image Based Rendering) technique. The error rate was obtained using the SSIM(Structural SIMilarity index).

  • In this paper, we propose a rate control scheme, using histogram based rate-distortion (R-D) estimation, which produces a consistent picture quality between consecutive frames. The histogram based R-D estimation used in our rate control scheme offers a closed-form mathematical model that enable us to predict the bits and the distortion generated from an encoded frame at a given quantization parameter (QP) and vice versa. The most attractive feature of the R-D estimation is low complexity of computing the R-D data because its major operation is just to obtain a histogram or weighted histogram of DCT coefficients from an input picture. Furthermore, it is accurate enough to be applied to the practical video coding. Therefore, the proposed rate control scheme using this R-D estimation model is appropriate for the applications requiring low delay and low complexity, and controls the output bit-rate ad quality accurately. Our rate control scheme ensures that the video buffer do not underflow and overflow by satisfying the buffer constraint and, additionally, prevents quality difference between consecutive frames from exceeding certain level by adopting the distortion constraint. In addition, a consistent considering the maximum tolerance BER of the voice service. Also in Rician fading channel of K=6 and K=10, considering CLP=$10^{-3}$ as a criterion, it is observed that the performance improment of about 3.5 dB and 1.5 dB is obtained, respectively, in terms of $E_b$/$N_o$ by employing the concatenated FEC code with pilot symbols.

  • Almost literature has so far proposed the modifications to IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC protocol to improve system throughput and average delay. Jitter(variance in packet delays) is, however, considered as an important QoS parameter for real-time streaming service which is popularized increasingly. Unfortunately, legacy access protocol for WLAN can't support the jitter. This paper proposes two schemes modifying the DCF MAC protocol to reduce the average value of jitter for multimedia frames arrived at received nodes. The one scheme, referred to as DCW-DCF(Decreasing Contention Window-DCF), reduces CW(Contention Window) size by half whenever a transmitted frame collided against other frames and back-off happens. Also, it increase initial CW size according as the link utilization and the collision probability increase. The other scheme, referred to as D-DIFS(Differential-DIFS), assigns different values to DIFS. That is, the DIFS interval is deceased as the number of back-off for a frame increases. In this paper, the two schemes are evaluated through simulation using ns2 and simulation results show that the proposed schemes are effective for improving the jitter property of standard WLAN.

  • Motion artifacts of central and autonomic nervous system signals degrades the performance of the bio-signal based human factor analysis. Firstly, we propose a defining method of motion artifact section by analyzing successive image frames. Motion artifact section is defined when the amount of motion is greater than the pre-defined threshold. In here, the amount of motion is estimated by first derivation of image frames at temporal domain. Secondly, we propose another defining method of motion artifact section through designing 2D Gaussian probability density function model by analyzing feature vectors of one cycle of signal such as length and amplitude. The defined motion artifact sections are interpolated on the basis of 1D Gaussian function. At result of applying the method into photoplethysmography signal, we confirmed that the calculated heartbeat rate from the restored photoplethysmography came up to the one from electrocardiography. Also, we found that the video based method generated relatively more false acceptance of motion artifact section and the probability density function based method generated relatively more false rejection of motion artifact section.

  • DVC (Distributed Video Coding) allows us to explore the video statistics at the decoder side, resulting in a less complex encoder and more complex decoder. In this approach, it is important to generate a good prediction to the current Wyner-Ziv frame, called side information, which plays a crucial role in the overall performance of a DVC system. Conventional MCFI (motion compensated frame interpolation) techniques, which explore temporal correlations between neighbor frames of the current frame, preform the block-based or object-based motion estimation, but, they do not include the basis frame for the Wyner-Ziv frame. This paper proposes an efficient way to get better side information, by finding the average frame between neighbor frames and by comparing adaptively the candidate blocks. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed method can improve the performance up to 0.4dB and provide better subjective and objective visual qualities in Wyner-Ziv CODEC.

  • Currently, there are many processes of package assembly and inspections of real fields that examine whether a manufactured semiconductor can be operated regularly and can endure low humidity or high temperatures. As the inspection equipment of a semiconductor test handler picker has been used at the inspection process, these inspection equipment frames were modelled in 3D and these models were analyzed using 3 kinds of fatigue loadings. As the analysis result, maximum deformation occurred at the midparts of the frames at cases 1 and 2. Among the cases of nonuniform fatigue loads, the 'SAE bracket history' with the severest change in load became the most unstable but the 'Sample history' became the most stable. Fatigue analysis result can be used effectively with the design of an inspecting equipment frame of a semiconductor test handler picker to examine the prevention and durability against damage.

  • In this paper, we propose 3D cloud animation by cloud modeling method of 2D images retrieved from a meteorological satellite. First, on the satellite images, we locate numerous control points to perform thin-plate spline warping analysis between consecutive frames for the modeling of cloud motion. In addition, the spectrum channels of visible and infrared wavelengths are used to determine the amount and altitude of clouds for 3D cloud image reconstruction. Pre-integrated volume rendering method is used to achieve seamless inter-laminar shades in real-time using small number of slices of the volume data. The proposed method could successfully construct continuously moving 3D clouds from 2D satellite images at an acceptable speed and image quality.

  • In this paper, we propose an object based 2D image to 3D conversion algorithm by using motion estimation, color labeling and non-local mean filtering methods. In the proposed algorithm, we first extract the motion vector of each object by estimating the motion between frames and then segment a given image frame with color labeling method. Then, combining the results of motion estimation and color labeling, we extract object regions and assign an exact depth value to each object to generate the right image. While generating the right image, occlusion regions occur but they are effectively recovered by using non-local mean filter. Through the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed algorithm performs much better than conventional conversion scheme by removing the eye fatigue effectively.
