  • The epitaxial graphene on the 4H- or 6H-SiC(0001) surface has been intensively studied due to the possibility of wafer-scale growt. However the existence of interface layer (zero layer graphene) and its influence on the upper graphene layer have been considered as one of the main obstarcles for the industrial application. Among various methods tried to overcome the strong interaction with the substrate through the interface layer, it has been proved that the hydrogen intercalation successfully passivate the Si dangling bond of the substrate and can produce the quasi-free standing epitaxial graphene (QFEG) layers on the siC(0001) surface. In this study, we report the results of the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and Raman spectroscopy for the QFEG layers produced by ex-situ and in-situ hydrogen intercalation. From the ARPES measurement, we confirmed that the Dirac points of QFEG layers exactly coincide with the Fermi level. The band structure of QFEG layer are sustainable upon thermal heating up to 1100 K and robust against the deposition of several metals andmolecular deposition. We also investigated the strain of the QFEG layers by using Raman spectroscopy measurement. From the change of the 2D peak position of graphene Raman spectrum, we found out that unlike the strong compressive strain in the normal epitaxial graphene on the SiC(0001) surface, the strain of the QFEG layer are significantly released and almost similar to that of the mechanically exfoliated graphene on the silicon oxide substrate. These results indicated that various ideas proposed for the ideal free-standing graphene can be tested based on the QFEG graphene layers grown on the SiC(0001) surface.

  • Penicillin G amidase (PGA, benzylpenicillinaminohydrolase, EC 3.5.1.11) is industrially important enzyme which converts penicillin G to 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) and phenylacetic acid (PAA). The PGA in E. coli ATCC 11105 is secreted into the periplasm after removing signal sequences and becomes heterodimer which composed of two subunits, small subunit (24 kDa) and large subunit (65 kDa). In this study, the PGA gene was obtained from E. coli ATCC 11105 using PCR (polymerase chain reaction) technique. The active PGA was successfully secreated into periplasm in E. coli BL2 1(DE3) harboring pET-pga plasmid. The optimized fed-batch fermentation, consisting of a three-step shift of culture temperature from $37^{\circ}C$ to $22^{\circ}C$, gave a productivity of 19.6 U/mL with a cell growth of 62 O.D. at 600 nm.

  • There has been lots of studies on communication systems using millimeter wave recently in many countries, specially in newly assigned 57GHz ~ 64GHz ISM band. Among those studies, IEEE 802.15.3c standard proposes OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) systems for high data rate transmission support. But OFDM method has the PAPR (peak-to-Average Power Radio) problem The PAPR problem is to decline the performance of the transmission system due to signals distorted severely when passing through nonlinear components such as ADC/DAC and power amplifiers. In order to solve the problem of P APR, this paper suggests SSC (Sine Soft Clipping) and analyzes the PAPR, CCDF, PSD, BER by applying SAW(Surface Acoustic Wave) filter and power amplifiers to IEEE 802.15.3.c OFDM WPAN systems.

  • Land-use or land-cover classification of satellite images is one of the important tasks in remote sensing application and many researchers have been tried to enhance classification accuracy. Previous studies show that the classification technique based on wavelet transform is more effective than that of traditional techniques based on original pixel values, especially in complicated imagery. Various wavelets can be used in wavelet transform. Wavelets are used as basis functions in representing other functions, like sinusoidal function in Fourier analysis. In these days, some basis functions such as Haar, Daubechies, Coiflets and Symlets are mainly used in 2D image processing. Selecting adequate wavelet is very important because different results could be obtained according to the type of basis function in classification. However, it is not easy to choose the basis function which is effective to improve classification accuracy. In this study, we computed the wavelet coefficients of satellite image using 10 different basis functions, and then classified test image. After evaluating classification results, we tried to ascertain which basis function is the most effective for image classification. We also tried to see if the optimum basis function is decided by energy parameter before classifying the image using all basis function. The energy parameter of signal is the sum of the squares of wavelet coefficients. The energy parameter is calculated by sub-bands after the wavelet decomposition and the energy parameter of each sub-band can be a favorable feature of texture. The decision of optimum basis function using energy parameter in the wavelet based image classification is expected to be helpful for saving time and improving classification accuracy effectively.

  • We present our study of the correlation between star formation rate(SFR) and merging activities of nearby galaxies(d<150Mpc). Our study uses 265 UV-selected galaxies which are not classified as AGN. The UV selection is made using the GALEX Atlas of Galaxies (Gil de Paz+07) and the updated UV catalog of nearby galaxies (Bai+15). We use deep R band optical images reaching to $1{\sigma}$ surface brightness detection limit ${\sim}27mag/arcsec^2$ to classify merger features by visual inspection. We also estimated unobscured SFR($SFR_{NUV}$) and obscured SFR($SFR_{W4}$) using Near-UV continuum and 22 micron Mid-IR luminosity respectively as a indicator of star forming activity. The fraction of galaxies with merger features in each SFR bin is obtained to see if how the fraction of galaxies with merging features($F_m$) changes as a function of SFR. As a result, for 203 late type galaxies(LTGs), we found that merger fraction increases from ~8% up to 50% with $SFR_{W4}$, while for 229 LTGs $SFR_{NUV}$ shows relatively consistent fraction(~18%) of merger fraction. For early type galaxies(ETGs), we could also find no significant correlation between $F_m$ and SFR(both $SFR_{NUV}$ and $SFR_{W4}$). This result suggests that a main driver of star forming activity of UV bright galaxies, especially for obscured late types, is mergers.

  • In a ${\Lambda}CDM$ universe, galaxies are believed to evolve by mergers and accretions. The debris resulting from such processes remains as diffuse, low-surface brightness structures, such as outer disks, stellar halos, and faint companions. These structures will give us fruitful insight into the recent mass assembly history of galaxies, but it is challenging to observe them due to their low surface brightness. In order to explore the structural properties of outskirts of nearby galaxies, we conduct deep wide-field imaging survey with KMTNet. Here we present a progress report of data reduction for the images of NGC 1291, a lenticular barred galaxy with outer rings. To achieve accurate flat fielding, we use dark sky flat and remove the sky gradient of each exposure with a polynomial fit. As a result, we are able to reach 1 sigma depth of ${\mu}_R{\sim}29.6\;mag\;arcsec^{-2}$. We expect to investigate the surface brightness profile of NGC 1291 in 1-D profile, and color-gradient in the outer part of the galaxy using the B- and R-band images.

  • $Y_{1-x}VO_4:Eu_x^{3+}$ red phosphors were synthesized with changing the mol ratios of $Eu^{3+}$ ions by using the solid-state reaction method. The crystalline structure of phosphors was found to be a tetragonal system with the maximum diffraction intensity at $25.02^{\circ}$. The grain particles showed the truncated hexagonal patterns with a very homogeneous size distribution at 0.05 mol of $Eu^{3+}$ ion. The excitation spectra of the phosphor ceramics were composed of a broad band centered at 303 nm and weak narrow multilines peaked in the range of 360-420 nm. The dominant emission spectrum was the strong red emission centered at 619 nm due to the $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_2$ electric dipole transition. The experimental results suggest that the optimum doping mol ratio of $Eu^{3+}$ ions for preparing the red phosphors is 0.10 mol with the asymmetry ratio of 5.21.

  • The underwater noise was measured by piezo-electric hydrophones submerged in the water at three different depths. The signals were led through connection cables to preamplifiers, and recorded simultaneously by a four channel tape recorder, and analysed by high resolution signal analyzer. The measurements were carried out at the fjord Skossvassen in archipelago off Bergen and at the cost of Norway in the North Sea. The results of the measurements and the analysis showed that the underwater noise consists of a steady broad band noise superposed by intermittent pulse of various strength. The noise levels measured in fjord Skossvassen indicated that they were generally higher at the shallow (10m) hydrophone than at the deeper hydrophone (25m, 50m). This tendency was not very distinct, however, the noise sources are close to the surface. The underwater noise spectrums measured in the open sea of Norway showed almost similar situation in all layers. This tendency showed that the noise sources are not close to the surface but they are far away from the measuring positions.

  • Recently graphene has emerged as a fascinating 2D system in condensed-matter physics as well as a new material for the development of nanotechnology. The unusual electronic band structure of graphene allows it to exhibit a strong ambipolar electric field effect with high mobility. These properties lead to the possibility of its application in high-performance transparent conducting films (TCFs). Compared to indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, which have a typical sheet resistance of ${\sim}60{\Omega}$/sq and ~85 % transmittance in the visible range (400?900 nm), the CVD-grown graphene electrodes have a higher/flatter transmittance in the visible to IR region and are more robust under bending. Nevertheless, the lowest sheet resistance of the currently available CVD graphene electrodes is higher than that of ITO. Here, we report an ingenious strategy, irradiation of MeV electron beam (e-beam) at room temperature under ambient condition, for obtaining size-homogeneous gold nanoparticle decorated on graphene. The nano-particlization promoted by MeV e-beam irradiation was investigated by transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy elemental mapping, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. These results clearly revealed that gold nanoparticle with 10 ~ 15 nm in mean size were decorated along the surface of the graphene after 1.5 MeV-e-beam irradiation. A chemical transformation and charge transfer for the metal gold nanoparticle were systematically explored by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. This approach advances the numerous applications of graphene films as transparent conducting electrodes.

  • In this paper, we propose a multiple access scheme using MHP(Modified Hermite Polynomial) pulse and ternary code for high-data and low-data rate for Out-body WBAN(Wireless Body Area Network). To satisfy the requirement of WBAN system, UWB-IR has been considered as a promising candidate for Out-body WBAN. The proposed multiple access scheme, using orthogonal MHP pulse and ternary code sets, reduces multi-user interference and distinguishes user signal from multi-user signals. We propose two algorithms for synchronous and asynchronous WBAN system. The symbol is constructed by MHP pulses and time hopping duration to reduce multi-user interference in the synchronous WBAN system. The symbol also is constructed by ternary code to avoid collision between pulse trains in the asynchronous WBAN system. The results of the proposed multiple access scheme show a clear improvement of BER.
