  • This paper describes the analysis and design of a GaAs FET distributed amplifier connecting a series capacitor to get a super wide bandwidth by reducing the gate line attenuation constant. In this approach a design example with a 300$\mu$ gate length FET devices is presented, and the abtained results are; that without series capacitors the bandwidth is 2-12 GHz, but with capacitors 2-20 GHz in flat gain.

  • We demonstrate an ultra-dense wavelength-division- multiplexed (UD-WDM) passive optical network (PON) where 12.5-GHz spaced 1 GbE ${\times}$ 256 optical channels are distributed using 12.5- and 200-GHz arrayed waveguide gratings in series. For the generation of upstream signals, we use reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers. We use two optical fiber amplifiers at the optical line terminal to amplify downstream and upstream channels.

  • Microwave model and high-frequency measurement of the ACF flip-chip interconnection was investigated using a microwave network analysis. S-parameters of on-chip and substrate were separately measured in the frequency range of 200 MHz to 20 GHz using a microwave network analyzer HP8510 and cascade probe. And the cascade transmission matrix conversion was performed. The same measurements and conversion techniques were conducted on the assembled test chip and substrate at the same frequency range. Then impedance values in ACF flip-chip interconnection were extracted from cascade transmission matrix. ACF flip chip interconnection has only below 0.1nH, and very stable up to 13 GHz. Over the 13 GHz, there was significant loss because of epoxy capacitance of ACF. However, the addition of SiO$_2$filler to the ACF lowered the dielectric constant of the ACF materials resulting in an increase of resonance frequency up to 15 GHz. High frequency behavior of metal Au stud bumps was investigated. The resonance frequency of the metal stud bump interconnects is higher than that of ACF flip-chip interconnects and is not observed at the microwave frequency band. The extracted model parameters of adhesive flip chip interconnects were analyzed with the considerations of the characteristics of material and the design guideline of ACA flip chip for high frequency applications was provided.

  • This paper presents analysis of passive metal interconnection of the LNA block in CMOS integrated circuit. The performance of circuit is affected by the geometry of RF signal path. To investigate the effect of interconnection lines, a cascode LNA is designed, and circuit simulations with full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulations are executed for different positions of a component. As the results, the position of an external capacitor (Cex) changes the parasitic capacitance of electric coupling; the placement of component affects the circuit performance. This analysis of interconnection line is helpful to analyze the amount of electromagnetic coupling between the lines, and useful to choose the signal path in the layout design. The target of this work is the RF LNA enabling the seamless connection of wireless data network and the following standards have to be supported in multi-band (WCDMA: 2.11~ 2.17 GHz, CDMA200 1x : 1.84~1.87 GHz, WiBro : 2.3~2.4GHz) mobile application. This work has been simulated and verified by Cadence spectre RF tool and Ansoft HFSS. And also, this work has been implemented in a 0.13um RF CMOS technology process.

  • In this paper, we propose an asymmetric dipole antenna utilizing the metal case as a ground radiator for a pen-type wireless presenter which operates in the ISM frequency band(2.4~2.48 GHz). A normal mode helix mounted on the top end of the long metallic cylinder case which acts as the ground plane takes the form of the asymmetric dipole structure in the proposed antenna. The metallic cylinder case which performs as a radiating element increases the inherent narrow bandwidth and low gain of the helix. The effects of the hand contacts with the metal case on the antenna performance are measured and analyzed with a specially designed human phantom. Experimental results show that the -10 dB return loss bandwidth of the proposed antenna in free space(no hand contact) is 200 MHz that ranges from 2.3 to 2.5 GHz and the maximum gain is measured to be 5 dBi. Under the normal operating condition where the metal case is contacted with a human hand, the bandwidth is 480 MHz from 2.24 to 2.72 GHz. The maximum gain is 2 dBi, lowered by 3 dB due to the hand contact.

  • This paper presents the results of one of early sciences with Korean VLBI Network (KVN): a large fringe survey of compact radio sources at 43GHz. We established the catalog of correlated flux densities in three ranges of baseline projection lengths of 637 sources from a 43 GHz (Q-band) survey observed with the Korean VLBI Network. Of them, 623 sources have not been observed before at Q-band with VLBI. The goal of this work in the early science phase of the new VLBI array is twofold: to evaluate the performance of the new instrument that operates in a frequency range of 22--129 GHz and to build a list of objects that can be used as targets and as calibrators. We have observed the list of 799 target sources with declinations down to $-40{\circ}$. Among them, 724 were observed before with VLBI at 22 GHz and had correlated flux densities greater than 200 mJy. The overall detection rate is 78%. The detection limit, defined as the minimum flux density for a source to be detected with 90% probability in a single observation, was in a range of 115--180 mJy depending on declination. However, some sources as weak as 70 mJy have been detected. Of 623 detected sources, 33 objects are detected for the first time in VLBI mode. We determined their coordinates with the median formal uncertainty 20 mas. The results of this work set the basis for future efforts to build the complete flux-limited sample of extragalactic sources at frequencies 22 GHz and higher at 3/4 of the celestial sphere.

  • We suggested a macro medel for MOS transistors, which incorporates the distributed substrate resistance by using a method which utilizes external diodes on SPICE MOS model. By fitting the simulated s-parameters to the measures ones, we obtained a model set for the W=200TEX>$\mu\textrm{m}$ and L=0.8TEX>$\mu\textrm{m}$ NMOS transistor, and also analyzed the effects of distributed substrate resistance in the RF range. By comparing the physical parameters calculated from simulated s-parameters such as ac resistances and capacitances with the measured ones, we confirmed the validity of the simulation results. For the frequencies below 10GHz, it seems appropriated to use a simple macro model which utilizes the existing SPICE MOS model with junction diodes, after including one lumped resistor each for gate and substrate nodes.

  • A new low phase noise Dielectric Resonator Parallel Feedback Oscillator(DRPFO) that is proposed in this paper has a simple structure so that it can be fabricated in low cost and with high performance. The proposed DRPFO is in a feedback loop oscillator configuration, which is composed of a low noise amplifier, a power amplifier, a power attenuator, a power divider and a parallel resonator feedback element that consists of a dielectric resonator coupled with two microstrip lines. The measured phase noise of DRPFO was less than -81 dBc/Hz at offset frequency 1 kHz of 10.75 GHz carrier frequency, and the frequency stability of DRPFO was less than $\pm$200 kHz over the temperature range of -40$^{\circ}$C to +60$^{\circ}$C.
