  • The fragmentation patterns and ion-molecule reactions of two alkyn alcohols, 2-propyn-1-ol (HC≡$CCH_2$OH) and 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (HC≡CC($CH_3)_2$OH), were investigated using Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FTMS). The most abundant fragment ions formed from the molecular ions were [M-H]$^+$ for 2-propyn-1-ol and [M-$CH_3]^+$ for 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol. The dehydrated ion, [M-$H_2O]^+$ was formed only from 2-propyn-1-ol in which $\alpha$ -hydrogen atoms were available for $\alpha,\;\alpha$ -elimination reaction. The protonated molecules were dissociated into [M+H-$H_2O]^+$ and [M+H-$C_2H_2]^+$ through dehydration and deacetylenylation processes. The formations of [M+H-$H_2O]^+$ and [M+H-$C_2H_2]^+$ from 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol were more favorable than those from 2-propyn-1-ol due to stabilization by two methyl groups at $\alpha$ -carbon. Ion-neutral complexes formed at long ion trapping time gave dehydrated and/or deacetylenylated ion products by further dissociation.

  • A strategy for synthesis of the furan-fused tetracyclic system of xestoquinone was explored through a model study. Using 3-butyn-1-ol as a starting material, 5-iodo-1-methoxymethoxy pentyne (5) was prepared in 5 steps. Reaction of ethyl 2-phenylpropanoate with 5 gave ethyl 7-methoxymethoxy-2-methyl-2-phenyl-5-heptynoate (6) in 88% yield, and then methyl 9-oxo-4-methyl-4-phenyl-2,7-nonadiynoate (13), the key intermediate, was synthesized in 6 steps from the ester 6. Intramolecular cycloaddition reaction of 13 afforded isobenzofuran 14 in 5% yield, which was converted to the tetracyclic structure 15 in the presence of Lewis acid.

  • A strategy for synthesis of the furan-fused tetracyclic core of xestoquinone and halenaquinone was explored through a model study. Methyl 8-oxo-4-methyl-4-phenyl-2,7-nonadiynoate was prepared from hydratroponitrile and 3-butyn-1-ol as starting materials. The intramolecular cycloaddition of this intermediate as a key step will be involved.

  • The $d^8$-transition metal complexes containing diphosphine, $MCl_2PP$ were prepared by using $K_nMCl_m$ as starting materials, wherein M were Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II) and Au(III) and PP were bis(diphenylphosphino)methane(dppm), bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane(dppe), bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp) and bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene(dppety). The complexes were characterized by the spectral property $(^H-NMR$, $^{31}P-NMR$ and UV-Visible spectra) together with elemental analysis. The complexes were tested for the catalytic activity on the formation reactions of 3(2H)-furanone and cyclic carbonate. The only Ni(II)- and Pd(II)-diphosphine complexes displayed a good catalytic effects in the production of 3(2H)-furanone from 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol [reaction (1)]. But all the diphosphine complexes as catalyst were almost inactive towards cyclic carbonate production preaction [reaction (2)].
