  • Two lymphoid-specific proteins, RAG1 and RAG2, are required for the initiation of the V(D)J recombination in vitro. The V(D)J cleavage that is mediated by RAG proteins at the border between the coding and signal sequences results in the production of a hairpin at the coding end and a double-stranded break at the signal end. Two hairpin coding ends are re-opened, modified, and sealed; whereas, the signal ends are directly ligated. Here I report that only RAG1 can carry out a distinct endonucleolytic activity in vitro using an oligonucleotide substrate that is tethered by a short single-stranded DNA. The purified RAG1 protein alone formed a nick at the near position to the recombination signal sequence. This endonucleolytic activity was eliminated by immunoprecipitation using the RAG1-specific antibody, and required the 3'-hydroxy group. All of the RAG1 mutants that were incapable of the nick and hairpin formation in the V(D)J cleavage analysis also showed this new endonucleolytic activity. This suggests that the nicking activity that was observed might be functionally different from the nick formation in the V(D)J cleavage.

  • In this paper, we propose an integral image compression method to improve the coding efficiency. As the characteristics of integral images are various according to the distance between a camera and objects, complexity of the objects and background, etc, the coding efficiency can be improved by applying a coding method adaptive to the characteristics. In addition, as the integral images are compressed by the unit of elemental images, the coding efficiency can be improved. by employing a coding method optimized to the coding direction of elemental images. Therefore, the proposed method remaps an integral image with six kinds of mapping rules, and then the conventional 3D-DCT based compression method is applied to the remapped images. Finally, we perform the rate-distortion optimization to choose the best of the mapping rules. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields high gains in image quality and bit-rate.

  • Guaranteeing quality of service over a multihop wireless network is difficult because end-to-end (ETE) delay is accumulated at each hop in a multihop flow. Recently, research has been conducted on network coding (NC) schemes as an alternative mechanism to significantly increase the utilization of valuable resources in multihop wireless networks. This paper proposes a new section-based joint NC and scheduling scheme that can reduce ETE delay and enhance resource efficiency in a multihop wireless network. Next, this paper derives the average ETE delay of the proposed scheme and simulates a TDMA network where the proposed scheme is deployed. Finally, this paper compares the performance of the proposed scheme with that of the conventional sequential scheduling scheme. From the performance analysis and simulation results, the proposed scheme gives more delay-and energy-efficient slot assignments even if the NC operation is applied, resulting in a use of fewer network resources and a reduction in ETE delay.

  • VP8, an open web media video format, has recently attractedmuch attention, particularly from major web browser companies, as a video codec for HTML5 on internet due to its good coding efficiency and royalty-free policy. Compared to other video compression schemes such as H.264/AVC, it has several distinctive coding tools that help to ensure good coding efficiency and low decoding complexity. In this paper, we investigate its coding techniques and analyze its rate-distortion (R-D) coding performance as compared to that of H.264/AVC.

  • Recently, the use of signal compression methods to improve the efficiency of wireless networks have increased. In particular, the MPC system was used in the pitch extraction method and the excitation source of voiced and unvoiced to reduce the bit rate. In general, the MPC system using an excitation source of voiced and unvoiced would result in a distortion of the synthesis speech waveform in the case of voiced and unvoiced consonants in a frame. This is caused by normalization of the synthesis speech waveform in the process of restoring the multi-pulses of the representation segment. This paper presents an ACFBD-MPC (Amplitude Compensation Frequency Band Division-Multi Pulse Coding) using amplitude compensation in a multi-pulses each pitch interval and specific frequency to reduce the distortion of the synthesis speech waveform. The experiments were performed with 16 sentences of male and female voices. The voice signal was A/D converted to 10kHz 12bit. In addition, the ACFBD-MPC system was realized and the SNR of the ACFBD-MPC estimated in the coding condition of 8kbps. As a result, the SNR of ACFBD-MPC was 13.6dB for the female voice and 14.2dB for the male voice. The ACFBD-MPC improved the male and female voice by 1 dB and 0.9 dB, respectively, compared to the traditional MPC. This method is expected to be used for cellular telephones and smartphones using the excitation source with a low bit rate.

  • An optimal matching approach is proposed to maximally ensure the output power uniformity of the cascaded encoder in the passive optical network (PON) monitoring system based on a remote coding scheme. The calculation results show that the optimum arrangement can effectively reduce the difference of the total insertion loss in comparison to the random arrangement (i.e., 0.07 dB vs 2.67 dB in the cascaded encoder with 16 output ports). The proposed approach realizes the optimum configuration for the $1{\times}2$ optical splitters used without adding any extra components. The test results of the fabricated cascaded encoder with 32 output ports prove the feasibility of the proposed approach.

  • In this paper, a real-time multiview video coding system using fast disparity estimation is proposed. In the multiview encoder, adaptive disparity-motion estimation (DME) for an effective 3-dimensional (3D) processing are proposed. That is, by adaptively predicting the mutual correlation between stereo images in the key-frame using the proposed algorithm, the bandwidth of stereo input images can be compressed to the level of a conventional 2D image and a predicted image also can be effectively reconstructed using a reference image and adaptive disparity vectors. Also, in multiview decoder, intermediate view reconstruction (IVR) using adaptive disparity search algorithm (DSA) for real-time multiview video processing is proposed. The proposed IVR can reduce a processing time of disparity estimation by selecting adaptively disparity search range. Accordingly, the proposed multiview video coding system is able to increase the efficiency of the coding rate and improve the resolution.

  • The video coding for very low bit rate has recently received considerable attention, but conventional block based transform coding schemes suffer from the blocking effect for the constraints of bit rates. In this paper, we present a video coding sysem suing multi-resolution motion estimation/compensation with variable size block(VMRME/C) and multi-resolution vector quantization(MRVQ) in wavelet transform domain for very low bit rate coding. It is shown that the presented scheme has better performance in the peak signal-to-nose ratio(RSNR) by 0.2-0.6 dB as well as subjective quality than that of conventional block based transform video coding techniques(especially, H. 263 which is DCT based video coding).

  • This paper proposes the H.264-based selective fine granular scalable (FGS) coding scheme that selectively uses the temporal prediction data in the enhancement layer. The base layer of the proposed scheme is basically coded by the H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC) visual coding scheme that is the state-of-art in codig efficiency. The enhancement layer is basically coded by the same bitplane-based algorithm of the MPEG-4 (Part 2) fine granular scalable coding scheme. In this paper, we introduce a new algorithm that uses the temproal prediction mechanism inside the enhancement layer and the effective selection mechanism to decide whether the temporally-predicted data would be sent to the decoder or not. Whenever applying the temporal prediction inside the enhancement layer, the temporal redundancies may be effectively reduced, however the drift problem would be severly occurred especially at the low bitrate transmission, due to the mismatch bewteen the encoder's and decoder's reference frame images. Proposed algorithm selectively uses the temporal-prediction data inside the enhancement layer only in case those data could siginificantly reduce the temporal redundancies, to minimize the drift error and thus to improve the overall coding efficiency. Simulation results, based on several test image sequences, show that the proposed scheme has 1∼3 dB higher coding efficiency than the H.264-based FGS coding scheme, even 3∼5 dB higher coding efficiency than the MPEG-4 FGS international standard.

  • Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite (DVB-S) [1] (EN 300 421(bibliography)) was introduced as a standard in 1994. However, by combing with higher order modulation, promise more powerful alternatives to the DVB-S / DVB-DSNG coding and modulation schemes. Variable rate coding and modulation (VCM) may employed to provide different levels of error protection to different service components. Adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) provides more exact channel protection and dynamic link adaptation to propagation conditions, targeting each individual receiving terminal. By these reasons, DVB-S2 introduced. This paper derives exact symbol error rate(SER) of 16-Amplitude Phase Shift Keying(APSK) modulation by using Craig's formula. 16-APSK modulation is used in DVB-S2. The difference between Union Bound and Craig's formula is 1.26dB in low SNR and 0.1dB in high SNR.
