  • This paper proposes an effective compression method to utilize the 3D integral image with large amount of data obtained by a lens array in various applications. The conventional compression methods for still images exhibit low performance in terms of coding efficiency and visual quality, since they cannot remove the correlation between elemental images. In the moving picture compression methods, 1D scanning techniques that produce a sequence of elemental images are not enough to remove the directional correlation between elemental images. The proposed method effectively sequences the elemental images from an integral image by the 2D referencing technique and compresses them using the multi-frame referencing of H.264/AVC. The proposed 2D referencing technique selects the optimal reference image according to vertical, horizontal, and diagonal correlation between elemental images. Experimental results show that compression with the sequence of elemental images presents better coding efficiency than that of still image compression. Moreover, the proposed 2D referencing technique is superior to the 1D scanning methods in terms of the objective performance and visual quality.

  • Hand posture recognition has been a wide region of applications in Human Computer Interaction and Computer Vision for many years. The problem arises mainly due to the high dexterity of hand and self-occlusions created in the limited view of the camera or illumination variations. To remedy these problems, a hand posture recognition method using 3-D point cloud is proposed to explicitly utilize 3-D information from depth maps in this paper. Firstly, hand region is segmented by a set of depth threshold. Next, hand image normalization will be performed to ensure that the extracted feature descriptors are scale and rotation invariant. By robustly coding and pooling 3-D facets, the proposed descriptor can effectively represent the various hand postures. After that, SVM with Gaussian kernel function is used to address the issue of posture recognition. Experimental results based on posture dataset captured by Kinect sensor (from 1 to 10) demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and the average recognition rate of our method is over 96%.

  • Multiple Description (MD) coding is a promising alternative for the robust transmission of information over error-prone channels. Lattice vector quantization (LVQ) is a significant version of MD techniques to design an MD image coder. However, different from the traditional 2D texture image, the 3D depth image has its own special characteristics, which should be taken into account for efficient compression. In this paper, an optimized MDLVQ scheme is proposed in view of the characteristics of 3D depth image. First, due to the sparsity of depth image, the image blocks can be classified into edge blocks and smooth blocks, which are encoded by different modes. Furthermore, according to the boundary contents in edge blocks, the step size of LVQ can be regulated adaptively for each block. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, which show better rate distortion performance compared with the conventional MDLVQ.

  • Two cases of block coded phase/frequncy modulations are investigated. minimum Euclidean distances are calculated as the function of modulation index h and rotation angle \ulcorner in the cases of 2-FSK/4-PSK and 2-FSK/8-PSK. Method of signal set partitioning is described, especially for the case of 2-FSK/8-PSK. The results are compared with S.I. Sayegh's work and shown better performance. For example, with simple parity check and repetition codes, we can get coding gain of 3 dB in the case of 2-FSK/4-PSK with block length n=4. We get 5.33 dB in the case of 2-FSK/8-PSK with n=4. And it is believed that we can get higher coding gain with proper combinations of block code and n-FSK/m-PSK type channel signal constellations.

  • In this paper, a rate-distortion based image segmentation algorithm is presented using a recursive merging with region adjacency graph (RAG). In the method, the dissimilarity between a pair of adjacent regions is represented as a Lagrangian cost function considered in rate-distortion sense. Lagrangian multiplier is estimated in each merging step, a pair of adjacent regions whose cost is minimal is searched and then the pair of regions are merged into a new region. The merging step is recursively performed until some termination criterion is reached. The proposed method thus is suitable for region-based coding or segmented-based coding. Experiment results for 256x256 Lena show that segmented-based coding using the proposed method yields PSNR improvement of about 2.5 - 3.5 dB. 0.8 -1.0 dB. 0.3 -0.6 dB over mean-difference-based method. distortion-based method, and JPEG, respectively.

  • This paper proposes a $16{\times}16$ and $32{\times}32$ inverse transform architecture for HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding). HEVC large transform of $16{\times}16$ and $32{\times}32$ suffers from huge computational complexity. To resolve this problem, we proposed a new large inverse transform architecture based on hardware reuse. The processing element is optimized by exploiting fully recursive and regular butterfly structure. To achieve low area, the processing element is implemented by shifters and adders without multiplier. Implementation of the proposed 2-D inverse transform architecture in 0.18 ${\mu}m$ technology shows about 300 MHz frequency and 287 Kgates area, which can process 4K ($3840{\times}2160$)@ 30 fps image.

  • Fractal-based monochrome image coding method can be easily applied for color image compression by splitting the color image into different primary spectral channels such as RGB, YIQ or $YC_bC_r$, and encoding each channel independently According to this method, it needs to repeat the fractal coding for each channel, so it have the problem of encoding time. In this paper, a fractal-based coder for color still image is proposed which features the enhancement of compression rate and the reduction of coding time. As the result of the experiment where the proposed algorithm is applied far color images, the compression rate is enhanced by 28 : 1 above with average PSNR value $28{\sim}29[dB]$, do not lossless encoding process using JPEG. And the encoding time is reduced by maximum 11.5 %.

  • In this paper, we propose an effective stereo-view video coding method that considers stereo-view and displayer characteristics. Current many stereo video displayers are designed for not only stereo display but also conventional single view display. In these systems, the resolution of two input videos for a stereo mode is half of that of single view for compatibility with conventional single view video services. In this raper, we propose a stereo video codec to deal with both single view and stereo view services by encoding whole left image and down-sampled right image. However, direct disparity estimation is not possible between two views because the resolution of a left image is different from that of the corresponding right image. So, we propose a disparity estimation method to make use of full information of the left reference image without down-sampling. In experimental result, we achieved $0.5{\sim}0.8\;dB$ coding gain, compared with several conventional algorithms.

  • Transform image coding using DCT is proved to be efficient in the absence of channel error but its performance degrades rapidly over noisy channel. In this paper, in the case of appling bit selcetive error correction coding that protects some significant bits in a codeword, an efficient allocation method of imformation bits and additive redundancy bits used for quantization and error correction coding respectively under constant transmission bit rate is proposed, and its performance is analyzed. As a result, without increasing trasmission bit rate, PSNR can be improved up to 7~8 [dB] below bit error rate $10^2$ and the image without blocking effect caused by bit error resulted from channel noise can be recostructed.

  • As immersive video contents have started to emerge in the commercial market, research on it is required. For this, efficient coding methods for immersive video are being studied in the MPEG-I Visual workgroup, and they released Test Model for Immersive Video (TMIV). In current TMIV, the patches are packed into atlas in order of patch size. However, this simple patch packing method can reduce the coding efficiency in terms of 2D encoder. In this paper, we propose patch packing method which pack the patches into atlases by using the similarity of each patch for improving coding efficiency of 3DoF+ video. Experimental result shows that there is a 0.3% BD-rate savings on average over the anchor of TMIV.
