The improved photocatalytic performance of a carbon/$TiO_2$ composite was studied for the Bisphenol A (BPA) decomposition. Titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) and a rice husk from Korea were heterogeneously mixed as the titanium and carbon sources, respectively, for 3 h at room temperature, and then thermally treated at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in $H_2$ gas. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed that the bulk carbon partially covered the $TiO_2$ particles, and the amount that was covered increased with the addition of the rice husk. The acquired carbon/$TiO_2$ composite exhibited an anatase structure and a novel peak at $2{\theta}=32^{\circ}$, which was assigned to bulk carbon. The specific surface area was significantly enhanced to 123~164 $m^2/g$ in the carbon/$TiO_2$ composite, compared to $32.43m^2/g$ for the pure $TiO_2$. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that the Ti-O bond was weaker in the carbon/$TiO_2$ composite than in the pure $TiO_2$, resulting in an easier electron transition from the Ti valence band to the conduction band. The carbon/$TiO_2$ composite absorbed over the whole UV-visible range, whereas the absorption band in the pure$TiO_2$ was only observed in the UV range. These results agreed well with an electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) study that showed that the electrons were rapidly transferred to the surface of the carbon/$TiO_2$ composite compared to the pure $TiO_2$. The photocatalytic performance of the BPA removal was optimized at a Ti:C ratio of 9.5:0.5, and this photocatalytic composite completely decomposed 10.0 ppm BPA after 210 min, whereas the pure $TiO_2$ achieved no more than 50% decomposition under any conditions.
We synthesized porous $Co_3O_4/RuO_2$ composite using the soft template method. Cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) was used to make micell as a cation surfactant. The precipitation of cobalt ion and ruthenium ion for making porosity in particles was induced by $OH^-$ ion. The porous $Co_3O_4/RuO_2$ composite was completely synthesiszed after anealing until $250^{\circ}C$ at $3^{\circ}C$/min. From the XRD ananysis, we were able to determine that the porous $Co_3O_4$/RuO2 composite was comprised of nanoparticles with low crystallinity. The shape or structure of the porous $Co_3O_4/RuO_2$ composite was studied by FE-SEM and FE-TEM. The size of the porous $Co_3O_4/RuO_2$ composite was 20~40 nm. From the FE-TEM, we were able to determine that porous cavities were formed in the composite particles. The electrochemical performance of the porous $Co_3O_4/RuO_2$ composite was measured by CV and charge-discharge methods. The specific capacitances, determined through cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement, were ~51, ~47, ~42, and ~33 F/g at 5, 10, 20, and 50 mV/sec scan rates, respectively. The specific capacitance through charge-discharge measurement was ~63 F/g in the range of 0.0~1.0 V cutoff voltage and 50 mAh/g current density.
We investigated a electrical and CO gas sensing properties of pure ZnO and ZnO-ZrO$_2$ composite ceramics. We made 0∼20mo1% ZrO$_2$added ZnO composite ceramics and observed a microstructure of the broken side of the samples. The properties of the samples were studied with temperature, composition, arid a concentration of carbon monoxid. The measured 1000ppm CO sensitivities of pure ZnO were about 1∼1.42, and that of ZnO-ZrO$_2$were about 1∼10.6. In order words, the 1000ppm CO sensitivities of ZnO-ZrO$_2$composite ceramics were about 1∼2 times larger than that of pure ZnO with temperature. The measured 250ppm, 500ppm CO sensitivities of ZnO-ZrO$_2$composite ceramics were about ∼3.28. ∼5.04, respectively.
A novel superabsorbent composite was prepared by intercalation polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) in the presence of montmorillonite (MMT), using ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator and $N,N'$-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross linker. The superabsorbent composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Maximum absorbency of the composite in distilled water and 0.9% sodium chloride solution was 722 and 108 g/g, respectively. The composite was used for removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Maximum amount of adsorption for $Ni^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ was 211.0, 159.6 and 1646.0 mg/g, respectively, and the adsorption was in accordance with both Langmuir and Freundlich model. The composite could be regenerated and reused in wastewater treatment.
We investigated the void formation in composite-titanium silicide($TiSi_2$) process. We varied the process conditions of polycrystalline/amorphous silicon substrate, composite $TiSi_2$ deposition temperature, and silicidation annealing temperature. We report that the main reason for void formation is the mass transport flux discrepancy of amorphous silicon substrate and titanium in composite layer. Sheet resistance in composite $TiSi_2$ without patterns is mainly affected by silicidation rapid thermal annealing (RTA) temperature. In addition, sheet resistance does not depend on the void defect density. Sheet resistance with sub-0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ patterns increase abnormally above $850^{\circ}C$ due to agglomeration. Our results imply that $sub-750^{\circ}C$ annealing is appropriate for sub 0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ composite X$sub-750_2$ process.
In the present study, (10%$Al_2O_3$+5%Si)/AZ91 Mg hybrid composite was fabricated using the squeeze casting method. During squeeze casting, molten Mg was infiltrated into the preform of 10%$Al_2O_3$+5%Si and reaction product of $Mg_2Si$ intermetallic compound was formed by the reaction between molten Mg and Si powder. Microstructure has been observed and mechanical properties were evaluated for the reaction squeeze cast (RSC) hybrid composite. It was found that Si powder totally reacted with molten Mg to form $Mg_2Si$. Reinforcement ($Al_2O_3$) and the reaction product ($Mg_2Si$) are fairly uniformly distributed in Mg matrix for the squeeze cast hybrid composite. Mechanical properties were improved with hybridization of reinforcements, namely higher hardness and enhanced wear resistance comparing squeeze cast (15%$Al_2O_3$)/AZ91 Mg composite.
Composite polycrystals including ${\gamma}$-$6Bi_2O_3$.$SiO_2$ crystal which have needlelike regular structure are useful for the high resolution optical devices. For the purpose of obtaining the composite polycrystals described above the melts of eutectic composition in the three eutectic systems including $6Bi_2O_3$.$SiO_2$ composition were unidirectionally solidified at a rate of 0.05 and 0.25 cm/h under a thermal gradient of 10$0^{\circ}C$/m. Composite polycrystals of relatively regular structure in which needlelike ${\gamma}$-$6Bi_2O_3$.$SiO_2$ crystals were arrayed in parallel with $2Bi_2O_3$.$B_2O_3$ crystal matrix were obtained when the eutectic melt of $6Bi_2O_3$.$SiO_2 -2Bi_2O_3$.$B_2O_3$ system was solidified at a rate of 0.25 cm/h. Partial structural irregularity however was found in the obtained composite polycrystals.
