  • This research was performed to investigate the effects of the location of recirculation port on the wastewater treatment efficiency of an anaerobic hybrid reactor consisted of a fluidized bed and a packed bed. The recirculation port was located either at the top of the packed bed (Reactor 2) or above the fluidized bed (Reactor 1). Media for the fluidized bed and the packed bed were granular activated carbon and Pall ring-type plastic media. respectively. At organic loading rates(OLR) up to $6.2kg\;COD/m^3-day$. Reactor 2 showed somewhat better performance than Reactor 1 with COD removal efficiencies of 85.0-95.2%. The COD removal efficiencies of the reactors drastically deteriorated at OLRs above $6.2kg\;COD/m^3-day$, and the tendency was more severe for Reactor 1 than for Reactor 2. Eventhough the two reactors showed similar effluent SS concentrations at OLRs below $3.6kg\;COD/m^3-day$, Reactor 2 showed higher effluent SS concentrations than Reactor 1 at OLRs above $5.3kg\;COD/m^3-day$. Reactor 2 was stabler than Reactor 1 with a methane production rate of $5.5kg\;COD/m^3$-day at the OLR of $13.3kg\;COD/m^3-day$. An abrupt increase in effluent volatile acid concentration was observed at the OLR of $6.2kg\;COD/m^3-day$ for Reactor 1 and $7.1kg\;COD/m^3-day$ for Reactor 2. and the increase was greater in Reactor 1. In conclusion. the range of OLR for adequate treatment in the hybrid reactor was determined according to the location of the internal recirculation port. It is more desirable for higher OLRs to locate the recirculation port at the top of the packed bed in order to utilize the whole volume of the reactor.

  • In this study, we analyzed a two-dimensional Stokes flow through a microchannel containing projections with constant spacing attached to each wall. The projections on the top and bottom walls were semi-circular in shape, with in-phase locations. By considering the periodicity and symmetry of the flow, the eigenfunction expansion and least squared error method were applied to determine the stream function and pressure distribution. For some typical radius and spacing values, the streamline patterns and pressure distributions in the flow field are shown, and the shear stress distributions on the boundary walls are plotted. In addition, the average pressure gradients in the microchannel are also calculated and shown with the radius and spacing of the projections. In particular, the results for the case of extremely small gaps between the projections on the top and bottom walls are in good agreement with the lubrication results.

  • With the rapid increase in gas consumption, the role of pipelines as a transportation means of natural gas is increasing. In general, when natural gas is being transported in pipelines, some liquid mainly from formation of condensate is introduced and this phenomenon makes operational problems more complex in the gas industry. Thus, an appropriate method is necessary for predicting the effect of presence of gas condensate on operational efficiency. In this study, a statistical model was developed using an integrated single- and two-phase flows concept. Using this model, the effects of the incipient point of gas condensate and its quantity on outlet pressure were analyzed. Also, the effect of variations of flow regimes in two-phase region on outlet pressure after the incipient point was analyzed.

  • In this study, the mixing process of two-phase flow generated by two jets with height difference is analyzed. The primary jet is jetted on the condition of the state mixed pulverized solid particles with air. The height difference between the main jet and the secondary jet is changed into three kinds(0, 32.5, 47.5mm). The velocity vector field, concentration field and turbulent properties of solid particles are measured by using 3-Dimensional Particles Dynamics Analyzer. As the height difference of two jets through the two nozzles increases, the solid particle recirculation zone and the dense zone in the combustion chamber become large. The solid particle concentration at the center of the combustion chamber gets dense because the particle velocity remains slow due to the existence of the solid particle recirculation zone. The particle concentration in the combustion chamber can also be influenced by the hight difference of two jets.

  • The phenomena of two-phase suspension flows appear widely in nature and industrial processes. Hence, it is of great importance to understand the mechanism of the gas-solid two-phase flows. In the present study, the numerical simulation has been approached by utilizing the Eulerian-Lagrangian methodology for describing the characteristics of the fluid and particulate phases in a vertical pipe and a 90°square-sectioned bend. The continuous phase(gas phase) is described by the Eulerian formulation and a κ-ε turbulence model is employed to find mean and turbulent properties of the gas phase. The particle properties(velocity and trajectory) are then described by a Lagrangian approach and computed using the mean velocity and turbulent fluctuating velocity of the gas phase. The predictions are compared with measurements by laser-Doppler velocimeter for the validation. As a result, the calculated results show good agreements.

  • In this study, experimental and numerical analyses are carried out to investigate the performance of centrifugal pump with various air admitting conditions. Experiments on the pump performance under air-water two-phase flow are accomplished using a centrifugal pump with semi-open type impeller having three, five and seven blades, respectively. Also, the numerical analysis of turbulent air-water two-phase flow using the finite volume method has been carried out to obtain the pressure, velocities and void fraction on the basis of a so-called bubbly flow model with the constant size and shape of cavity. The results obtained through this study show the reasonable agreements within the range of bubbly flow regime. There are promising developments concerning application of the present study for the flow in a centrifugal pump with two-phase flow conditions and efforts must be followed to improve the turbulence model and two-phase flow model for turbomachinery.

  • This experimental study was conducted to figure out the drag reduction and convective heat transfer in vertical downward two-phase flow with polymer additives. The drag reduction effect were analyzed by using the difference of the pressure drop between the flow with polymer additives and without it. Experimental results show that the pressure drop with polymer additives is less than the pressure drop without polymer in vertical downward two-phase flow. And the convective heat transfer has decreased with increasing the polymer concentration in vertical downward two-phase flow.

  • Characteristics of two-phase flow and heat transfer were numerically investigated in a submerged gas injection system when temperature of the injected gas was different from that of the liquid. The Eulerian approach was used for both the continuous and dispersed phases. The turbulence in the liquid phase was modeled using the standard $k-\varepsilon$$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The interphase friction and heat transfer coefficient were calculated from the correlations available in the literature. The turbulent dispersion of the phases was modeled by a "dispersion Prandtl number". In the case with heat transfer where the temperature of the injected gas is higher than the mean liquid temperature, the axial and the radial velocities are lower in comparison with the case of homogeneous temperatures. The results in the present research are of interest in the design and operation of a wide variety of material and chemical processes.
