  • This study is to analyze and predict the contaminant transport based on the hydrauli characteristics using 2-dimensional finite element model. The dynamic wate quality model. RMA-4. is used to predict the contaminant transport using the hydrulic characteristics obtained from RMA-2v model. The study region is from downstream of Cham-sil weir to upstream of Shin-Kok weir. From the results of contaminant transport analysis. it is shown that the variations of discharge and velocity give quite large effect to the transport and dispersion of contaminant material. and that the water qualities of Joong-Rang and Tan streams play an important role to the downstream also. when the incidental contaminant accident occurs and contaminant material moves to the downstream. it is resulted the decreasing of the maximum COD and the increasing of the duration time to be affected by contaminant. Finally. 2-dimensional analysis is required in the case of large river like Han River. since the large difference of contaminant concentration has been investigated in the left and right bank.

  • Tidal and wind-driven currents in Chinhae Bay are investigated using a three-dimensional numerical model developed by Kim et al. (1993). The simulations indicate that the flow patterns in the bay are predominated by the bathymetry, wind and river inflow, and the effects of wind on the flow pattern in the inner bay are much stronger than those in the entrance channel. Computed tidal currents coincide with the field measurements. The horizontal and vertical velocities of tidal and residual currents are strong in the entrance channel of the bay, whereas the velocities are relatively weak in the western and northern parts of the bay. Computed velocity fields show the expected phase difference between the velocities in the surface and those in the bottom layer, and these characteristics are more remarkable during the spring tide than the neap tide. The surface currents in the bay depend strongly on the wind and river inflow, and such phenomena are more remarkable during the neap tide than the spring tide.

  • This study analyzed the hydrodynamic flow behavior on a standard ogee spillway with pier by using FLOW-3D. The simulation results were compared with the experiment data of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Waterways Experiment Station (WES) and also compared with 2-dimensional simulation results on a spillway without pier. In particular, the characteristics of the distribution of the overflow nappe and pressure in a spillway with pier were investigated in detail. As for the results of the simulation on the flow rate, overflow nappe, and pressure, although there were a few differences in the experiment results of WES, they were identical in most cases in terms of trend. Summarizing the major flow behavior in a standard ogee spillway with pier, first, the water stage at the center line of the bay was higher than that at the side of the bay along the pier. Second, when the water head was larger than the design head of the spillway, at the upstream area of the weir crest, the absolute magnitude of negative pressure occurred highest at the side of the bay along the pier. On the other hand, at the downstream area of the weir crest, the absolute magnitude of negative pressure occurred highest at the centerline of the bay.

  • Predicting the deformation behaviors of sheets in thermoforming processes has been a daunting challenge due to the strong nonlinearities arising from very large deformations, mold-polymer contact condition and hyperelasticity constitutive equations. Nonlinear numerical analysis is always required to face this challenge especially for realistic processing conditions. In this study a 3-D algorithm and the membrane approximation are developed for thermoforming processes. The constitutive equation is expressed in terms of the 2nd Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor and the Cauchy-Green deformation tensor. The 2-term Mooney-Rivlin model is used for the material model equation. The algorithm is established by the finite element formulation employing the total Lagrangian coordinate. The deformation behavior and the stress distribution results of 3-D algorithm with various point boundary conditions are compared to those of the membrane approximation algorithm. Also, the slip boundary condition and the no-slip boundary condition are applied for the systems that have molds. Finally, the effect of sheet temperatures on the final thickness distribution is investigated for the ABS material.

  • In this study, quasi-3D inundation flow simulations were conducted for a simplified subway station configuration. The effects of variations in rainwater inflow locations and discharge were investigated, analyzing the resulting inundation flow patterns and flood risk. The inundation simulation results calculated the incipient velocities for slipping and toppling accidents to assess pedestrian safety. The results indicated that velocities exceeding the incipient velocity for slipping accidents mainly occurred on the flooded staircase. Meanwhile, velocities surpassing the incipient toppling accidents were observed around the staircase and the corridor near the staircase leading to B2F. This observation is consistent with the results from the specific force distribution analysis. To provide detailed flood risk assessments, the Flood Hazard Degree (FD) was applied with four levels of criteria, along with the Flood Intensity Factor (FIF). The results demonstrated that FD identified a broader area at risk of flood-induced consequences compared to FIF. When comparing the different inundation risk assessment methods, the specific force method tended to overestimate the risk area, whereas FIF tended to underestimate it. Furthermore, among all assessment methods, the influence of rainwater discharge was found to have a more dominant effect on flood risk assessment compared to the number of rainwater inflow locations. Additionally, the direction of inundation flow influenced the assessed risk, with collision-induced flow patterns leading to higher flood risk than those with identical flow directions.

  • A laterally averaged 2-dimensional hydrodynamic model is newly developed. The coordinate system is first transformed to minimize the effects of irregularity of bottom and surface. The advection terms of the governing equations are then discretized by an upwind scheme. By employing an explicit scheme for longitudinal direction and an implicit scheme for vertical direction, the model is free from restriction of temporal step size caused by a relatively small grid ratio. To demonstrate the applicability of the model, calculated time histories of free surface displacements and distributions of velocity and salinity are compared with the field measurements of the Keum River Estuary before construction of the estuary dam. A reasonable agreement is observed between them.

  • To investigate the structure of internal flow hydrodynamically, the complete vertical equation of motion should be assembled into the model. In the present study a numerical simulation model not hydrodynamically approximated is established. From the comparison of the predicted results with the computed results from k-$ two equation turbulence model by Huh et. al.(1991)and the experimental data by Nakatsuji(1984), the vertical acceleration and its effects on the development of buoyant surface jets are evaluated quantitatively.

  • For construction and design of tunnels, groundwater flow models are used to find the influence of groundwater to the stability of tunnels considering the geological condition around the tunnels and the materials used in tunnel linings. For the analysis of tunnel flow, some commercial programs, e.g. MODFLOW, SEEP/W etc., are used. These programs have limitations that MODFLOW could not define curved surface smoothly in three dimensional flow media and SEEP/W is the 2-dimensional flow model. In this paper, the ability of a finite element program developed for analyzing 3-dimensional groundwater flow is examined. Confined steady state groundwater flow solution in non-homogeneous media is obtained using isoparametric element with eight trilinear hexahedron nodes and is compared with the result of MODFLOW. It was found that the solution yielded a good result with the three dimensional flow studied.
