  • In this paper, a best-first branch and bound algorithm based upon the bottom-up approach for the unweighted unconstrained two-dimensional cutting problem is proposed to find the optimal solution to the problem. The algorithm uses simple and effective methods to prevent constructing duplicated patterns and reduces the searching space by dividing the branched node set. It also uses a efficient bounding strategy to fathom the set of patterns. Computational results are compared with veil-known exact algorithms and demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

  • Cholesterol-containing surfactant was synthesized, and it was sonicated with monomer in water to form a vesicle solution. This vesicle solution was dried to construct a membrane which had a molecular multilayer structure. Using UV irradiation the monomer in this membrane were polymerized, and then surfactant was extracted by organic solvent. Using a X-ray diffractometer, the thickness of one layer and the regularity of the multilayer were measured. And scanning electron microscopy was conducted for fractured polymer film.

  • The two-dimensional guillotine cutting problem is to maximize sum of piece profits that cut from one stock rectangle and widely applied in the industry. The branch-and-bound method for this problem uses complementarily several upper bounds(the Gilmore and Gomoryp[8]'s two-dimensional knapsack function and the Hifi and Zissimopoulos[10]'s method using one-dimensional knapsack problem, etc) to reduce the number of searched nodes. These upper bounds has a shortcoming that does not consider the bound and layout of pieces simultaneously. In this paper, we propose an efficient upper bound which can complement the shortcoming of existing upper bounds. The proposed upper bound needs less memory spaces and computing time. Computational results show that the proposed upper bound significantly contribute to reduce the computational amount of time and number of searched nodes in tree.

  • We investigate magnetism and magnetocrystalline anisotropy of CoFe thin films, using VASP code in GGA. In this study Co-terminated and Fe-terminated 5-layer CoFe thin films are employed. The Co-terminated CoFe thin film shows two total energy minima at 2-dimensional lattice constants of $2.45{\AA}$ and $2.76{\AA}$. The film of $2.45{\AA}$ has fcc-like structure and the film of $2.76{\AA}$ has bcc-like structure similarly to a bulk CoFe alloy. And the fcc-like film is more stable by the energy difference of about 160 meV compared to the bcc-like film. The Fe-terminated CoFe film shows very complicated behaviour of total energy which is suspected to be closely related to its complex magnetic structure. The Co-terminated CoFe film of $2.76{\AA}$ shows perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA), while the film of 2.45 does parallel MCA. The Fe-terminated CoFe film also exhibits similar MCA behaviour.

  • Location-Based Services(LBS) give rise to location-based queries of which results depend on the locations of moving objects. One of important applications of LBS is to examine tracks of continuously moving objects. Moving objects databases need to provide 3-dimensional indexing for efficiently processing range queries on the movement of continuously changing positions. An extension of the 2-dimensional R-tree to include time dimension shows low space utilization and poor search performance, because of high overlap of index nodes and their dead space. To solve these problems, we propose a new R-tree based indexing technique, namely TR-tree. To increase storage utilization, we assign more entries to the past node by using the unbalanced splitting policy. If two nodes are highly overlapped, these nodes are forcibly merged. It is the forced merging policy that reduces the dead space and the overlap of nodes. Since big line segments can also affect the overlap of index nodes to be increased, big line segments should be clipped by the clipping policy when splitting overfull nodes. The TR-tree outperforms the 3DR-tree and TB-tree in all experiments. Particularly, the storage utilization of the TR-tree is higher than the R-tree and R*-tree.

  • In this study, the effect of the fluid flow characteristics on the length distribution of the fracture elements composing the fracture network is analyzed numerically using the 3D fracture crack network model. The truncated power-law distribution is applied to generate the length distribution of the fracture elements and the simulations of fluid flow are carried out with the exponent ${\beta}_l$ from 1.0 to 6.0. As a result of simulations, when the exponent ${\beta}_l$ increases, the length distribution of the fracture elements gradually decreases, and the connectivity between the fracture elements affecting the permeability of the fracture network becomes weak. When we analyzed the distributions of flow rate calculated at each fracture element with the exponent ${\beta}_l$, the mean flow rate at ${\beta}_l=1.0$ was estimated to be about 447 times larger than that at ${\beta}_l=6.0$ and for the flow calculated at the outflow boundary of the fracture network, the case of ${\beta}_l=1.0$ was estimated to be 6,440 times larger than that of ${\beta}_l=6.0$.

  • Clinically, the fit of fixed prosthesis is an essential element for successful restoration. The fit of prosthesis is largely classified into marginal fit and internal fit, and various methods to assess these have been introduced including microscopic margin measurement, cross-sectional measurement, silicone replica technique, 3-dimensional scanning data superposition, weight technique and micro CT scanning. Thus, this study is aimed at proposing a more convenient and accurate measurement method of fits in a digital environment by comparatively analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each known method based on existing literature.

  • The calculation of the resulting fluid motion is an important problem of ship hydrodynamics. For a partially immersed body the condition of constant pressure at the free surface can be linearized. The resulting linear boundary-value problem for the velocity potential is the Neumann-Kelvin problem. The two-dimensional Neumann-Kelvin problem is studied for the half-immersed circular cylinder by Ursell. Maruo introduced a slender body approach to simplify the Neumann-Kelvin problem in such a way that the integral equation which determines the singularity distribution over the hull surface can be solved by a marching procedure of step by step integration starting at bow. In the present pater for the two-dimensional Neumann-Kelvin problem, it has been suggested that any solution of the problem must have singularities in the corners between the body surface and free surface. There can be infinitely many solutions depending on the singularities in the coroners.

  • This study was performed to compare the shape and dimension of anterior zirconia crowns to other pediatric crowns using a three-dimensional scanner to investigate adequate amount of tooth preparation. Primary central and lateral anterior zirconia crowns, stainless steel crowns and celluloid strip crowns were scanned by a three-dimensional scanner. Outer and inner surfaces of zirconia and stainless steel crowns, and outer surface of celluloid strip crowns were analyzed. In outer scanned images, all sizes of central and lateral size 1 zirconia crown had the largest labiolingual diameter among the three crowns. In inner scanned images, zirconia crown's mesiodistal diameter was 0.7-1.0 mm smaller and crown length was approximately 1 mm shorter than those of stainless steel crowns. Zirconia crown's labiolingual diameter was larger in central crowns whereas it was smaller in lateral crowns than that of stainless steel crowns. Recommended preparation required for zirconia crown is incisal 2.5-3.0 mm, mesiodistal 1.5-2.0 mm, labial 0.5-1.0 mm. Cingulum should be trimmed parallel to the long axis. No more lingual reduction is needed in central incisors whereas additional 0.5 mm reduction is suggested in lateral incisors.
