  • Micro catalytic reactors are alternative propulsion device that can be used on a nano satellite. When used with a monopropellant, $H_2O_2$, a micro catalytic reactor needs only one supply system as the monopropellant reacts spontaneously on contact with catalyst and releases heat without external ignition, while separate supply lines for fuel and oxidizer are needed for a bipropellant rocket engine. Additionally, $H_2O_2$ is in liquid phase at room temperature, eliminating the burden of storage for gaseous fuel and carburetion of liquid fuel. In order to design a micro catalytic reactor, an appropriate catalyst material must be selected. Considering the safety concern in handling the monopropellants and reaction performance of catalyst, we selected hydrogen peroxide at volume concentration of 70% and perovskite redox catalyst of lantanium cobaltate doped with strondium. Perovskite catalysts are known to have superior reactivity in reduction-oxidation chemical processes. In particular, lantanium cobaltate has better performance in chemical reactions involving oxygen atom exchange than other perovskite materials. In the present study, a process to prepare perovskite type catalyst, $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}CoO_3$, and measurement of its propellant decomposition performance in a test reactor are described.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) performed the preliminary design of liquid rocket engine high-altitude simulation firing test facility for the development and qualification of LRE for the 2nd stage of KSLV-II. The engine high-altitude simulation firing test facility, which are to be constructed at Goheung Space Center, will provide liquid oxygen and kerosene to enable the high-altitude simulation firing test of 2nd stage engine at ground test facility. The high-altitude environment is obtained using a supersonic diffuser operated by the self-ejecting jet from the liquid rocket engine.

  • 2nd stage of KSLV-I, NaRo-Ho, performs CCAM not to collide with Naro Science Satellite. At that moment, the satellite should pass through the Plume Density area which was generated by KSLV-I KM residual thrust. Therefore, it is necessary to predict Plume Density field of KM residual thrust and guarantee the safety of the trajectory of payload. In this paper, DSMC method was used to simulate Plume Density by KM residual thrust and the simulation showed that the trajectory of Naro Science Satellite was safe.

A Basic Study of Fuel 2-staging Y-jet Atomizer to Reduce NOx in Liquid Fuel Burner (액체 연료용 버너에서 NOx 저감을 위한 연료2단 분사 Y-jet 노즐에 관한 기초연구)

  • A basic experimental study has been carried out to find out the design parameters of fuel 2-staging atomizers in order to reduce nitrogen oxides(NOx) rate emitted from the steam boilers used the liquid fuel. The heavy fuel oil(B-Coil) and fuel 2-staging Y-jet twin-fluid atomizers were adopted in this study. The results of this paper were obtained from the real as well as the model scale atomizers. In the case of model atomizers test, NOx reduction rate was strongly dependent on the staged fuel rate, but it was weakly dependent on the injection hole arrangement and air swirl conditions. The real scale atomizers was designed and manufactured on the base of these test results, and those was mounted and operated in the real boiler generates 185 ton steam per an hour. The reduction rate of the model and real plant was reached 10∼30% of base NOx by atomizers. but dust was sharply increased in the low O$_2$combustion region of the real plant.

  • Most droplet generators are based on the Rayleigh's theory of droplet breakup, and various kind of droplet generation devices have been designed in accordance with vibrating method of capillary liquid column. At present, VOAG(Vibrating Orifice Monodisperse Aerosol Generator) is used to generate primary aerosol standards. For the combustion experiments with isolated single droplet, it is found that dripping method or separating method of suspended drop at an end of filament are more effective. Single drops can be separated from continuous streams of droplets by controlling electric charge.

  • A study of low NOx atomizer was carried out to reduce nitrogen oxides(NOx) in a liquid fuel burner flame. The basic concept of NOx reduction in this atomizer is the fuel 2-staging combustion which is generated by a single atomizer forming two different stoichiometric flames. Two orifices swirl atomizer was selected and modified to realize this concept, and it was tested to obtain the design process of low NOx atomizer. These experiments were achieved to find out the relationship between the injection pressures and the flow rate, spray angle and drop size of swirl atomizer as well as to confirm the NOx reduction concept in real plant(power boiler). In comparison between experimental and theoretical results, the correct discharge coefficient and spray angle were obtained. In real burning test, NOx reduction rate was reached to above 27% of the case using conventional swirl atomizer.

  • The 2nd stage Kick Motor under the national aerospace middle and long term plan operates over the height of 300Km. Rocket Motors, designed for operation in high altitude, need nozzles with large expansion ratio to improve thrust efficiency. Hence, to evaluate the performance of such rocket motors on the ground, similar low pressure with the operating condition has to be made for the ground test to prevent flow separation in the nozzle. This study is for the installation of the high altitude test facility and test result for Kick Motor.

Numerical Study on Pilot Ratio Effect of Shale-Gas in a Commercial Gas Turbine (상용급 가스터빈에서 셰일가스 파일럿비 영향에 관한 수치해석적 연구)

  • In this work, the flow and combustion characteristics using a 3-D numerical simulation was evaluated for a shale gas fueled combustor in a commercial class gas turbine. The Standard k-e turbulence model, 2 step methane oxidation mechanism, Finite rate/Eddy dissipation reaction model, DTRM radiation model were employed and validated well at the baseline condition (Natural Gas, Pilot Ratio 0.2). Based on the validated models, the combustion characteristics of shale gas was evaluated for three pilot ratios cases. It was found that NOx concentrations for all shale gas cases were less than the that for city gas, which imply that, at the selected PRs, the condition for combustion stability is satisfied. In addition, for higher PR, whereas the average temperatures at the exit are the same, the NOx increases. It means that diffusion combustion portion increases due to the higher PR.

비활성 가스제너레이터 성능분석

  • 비활성 가스제너레이터는 가스터빈 추진기관 및 기타 열기관을 이용하여 연소가 되지 않는 저온의 공기를 생산하는 기계장치를 말하며 이러한 저온의 비활성 기체를 화재 지역에 분사하는 경우 기존의 소방수를 이용한 화재 진압방식보다 매우 효율적으로 화재진압에 사용되어 질 수 있다. 일반적으로 민항기 등의 가스터빈 추진 기관에서 배기되는 기체내에는 터빈입구온도(TIT : Turbine Inlet Temperature)및 초과공기지수(Excess Air Coefficient)에 따라 다르게 나타나지만 TIT가 1500$^{\circ}$K인 경우 약 13-14%정도의 산소가 잔존하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 가스터빈 및 열교환 시스템 그리고 터빈 1단 등의 시스템 조합율을 통하여 대기 중의 기체의 온도를 영하 2$0^{\circ}C$ 및 산소함유량을 약 5%수준까지 낮춤으로서 이를 대형 화재 진압에 사용하기 위한 연구이다. 비활성 가스제너레이터에 사용하는 연료로는 Kerosene 및 CNG(Compressed Natural Gas)등이 사용될 수 있으며, 유량이 8.1kg/sec인 터보축 가스터빈 엔진을 사용하는 경우 18750㎥ 부피의 비활성기체를 생산하는데 Kerosene 연료가 약 1톤(200$ 이하)이 필요한 것으로 계산되며 이에 소요되는 시간도 약 52분에 지나지 않는 것으로 계산되었다. 만일 50kg/sec의 보다 큰 가스터빈 엔진을 사용하는 경우 약 9분 정도가 필요한 것으로 계산되었다. 사용되는 가스터빈은 압축비가 15, 열교환기의 효율이 $\varepsilon$=0. 그리고 최종 터빈 1단의 팽창비가 1.25가 적합한 것으로 계산된다. 연구 분석 결과 기술적 문제점으로는 배기 가스온도가 낮은데 따른 출구 부분의 Bearing, Sealing이 문제가 될 수 있다고 판단되며 배기 가스 자체에 대기 공기중에 함유되어 있던 습기가 얼어붙는(Icing화) 문제가 발생하기 때문에 배기가스의 Icing을 방지하기 위하여 압축기 끝단에서 공기를 추출하여 배기부분에 송출할 필요성이 있는 것으로 판단되었다. 출구가스의 기체 유동속도가 매우 빠르므로 (100-l10m.sec) 이를 완화하기 위한 디퓨저의 설계가 요구된다고 판단된다. 또 연소기 후방에 물을 주입하는 경우 열교환기 및 기타 부분품에 발생할 수 있는 부식 및 열교환 효율 저하도 간과할 수 없는 문제로 파악되었다. 이러한 기술적 문제가 적절히 해결되는 경우 비활성 가스 제너레이터는 민수용으로는 대형 빌딩, 산림, 유조선 등의 화재에 매우 적절히 사용되어 질 수 있을 뿐 아니라 군사적으로도 군사작전 중 및 공군 기지의 화재 그리고 지하벙커에 설치되어 있는 고급 첨단 군사 장비 등의 화재 뿐 아니라 대간첩작전 등에 효과적으로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Synthesis of Dense $ZrSi_2-SiC$ Composites by High-Frequency Induction Heated Combustion and Its Mechanical Properties (고주파 유도가열 소결법에 의한 치밀한 $ZrSi_2-SiC$ 합성 및 기계적 특성)

  • 고주파 유도가열 연소합성법에 의해 2분 이내의 짧은 시간에 단일 공정으로 ZrC와 3Si의 혼합 분말로부터 $ZrSi_2-SiC$ 복합재료의 합성과 치밀화가 동시에 이루어졌다. 60MPa의 압력과 90%의 고주파 출력을 가하여 제조된 복합재료의 상대밀도는 약 97%였으며, $ZrSi_2$ 상과 SiC의 평균 결정립 크기는 약154nm와 78nm이었다. 비커스 경도계를 이용하여 측정된 $ZrSi_2-SiC$ 복합 재료의 경도와 파괴인성 값은 각각 $1180kg/mm^2$$2.5MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ 이었다.
