During the 1980s and 1990s, most of the old industrial cities of advanced countries have experienced serious de-industrialisation. This has caused many problems, such as economic decline, increasing unemployment, environmental degradation and social unrests. Since the mid-1980s, some of these cities have started to tackle the problems by urban regeneration programs with cultural and artistic activities, new industries, and implementing housing projects. The cities of Newcastle and Gateshead in Northeastern England were the examples of the ones which have created major development projects, such as building condominiums, renovating old factory building, and promoting cultural and art activities. This paper introduces policies and programs of the cities' urban regeneration, analyses their governance structure, and articulates factors contributing to the success of the policies and programs.
Volcano hazard mapping became a focus of scientific inquiry in the 1960s. Dwight Crandell and Don Mullineaux pioneered the geologic history approach with the concept of the past is the key to the future, to hazard mapping. The 1978 publication of the Mount St. Helens hazards assessment and forecast of an eruption in the near future, followed by the large eruption in 1980 demonstrated the utility of volcano hazards assessments and triggered huge growth in this area of volcano science. Numerical models of hazardous processes began to be developed and used for identifying hazardous areas in 1980s and have proliferated since the late 1990s. Model outputs are most useful and accurate when they are constrained by geological knowledge of the volcano. Volcanic Hazard maps can be broadly categorized into those that portray long-term unconditional volcanic hazards-maps showing all areas with some degree of hazard and those that are developed during an unrest or eruption crisis and take into account current monitoring, observation, and forecast information.

Until 1980s, Korean elementary school architecture has been stereotyped by standard drawings. But there have been very few researches focused on this subject, especially regional one. As an attempt to improve these conditions, this study reviewed standard drawings of elementary school architecture by Education Board of Seoul in 1964 and 1975. Both standard drawings were reviewed through items such as components making a set of standard drawings, floor plan, elevation design and subsidiary facilities. They have rectangular unit classrooms, single-corridor block plan and plain exterior having no symbolic images, which are the characteristics of typical Korean school architecture until 1980s. On the other hand, they reveal the unknown characteristics such as double-corridor block plan, classrooms in basement, toilets of conventional type placed on every floor and changes in details of openings and exterior wall.
Time series of ocean climate indices and catch records were used to identify the alternation patterns of pelagic fish populations in relation to climate regime shifts. During 1910-2008, an orderly alternation of dominant pelagic fish groups was observed in the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC; Yellow Sea-East China Sea-East Sea/Japan Sea) and Kuroshio-Oyashio Current (KOC; Northwestern Pacific) regions. After the collapse of herring fishery in the late 1920s, the sardine (A group) dominated in the 1930s, 3 other species (C group; Pacific saury, jack mackerel, and anchovy) dominated in the 1950s-1960s, chub mackerel (B group) dominated in the 1970s, and then sardine (A group) dominated again during cool regime in the 1980s. As sardine biomass decreased in association with the climate regime shift that occurred in the late 1980s, catches of C group immediately increased after the regime shift and remained at high levels during warm regime in the 1990s. Alternations of dominant fish groups occurred 6 times between 1910 and 2008. The dominant period of the 7 species lasted for 10-20 years. The catch of Pacific sardine in the TWC and KOC regions showed a negative correlation with the catch of the other 5 species (Pacific herring, anchovy, jack mackerel, Pacific saury, and common squid), suggesting that the abundance of the 5 species is strongly affected by the abundance of Pacific sardine in relation to the climate regime shifts. The total catch level of the 7 species in the KOC region was generally higher than that in the TWC region before 1991 but was lower after 1992, suggesting that the fish populations in the Pacific side are shifted to the TWC region by zonal oscillation of the oceanic conditions in relation to the climate regime shift in the late 1980s.

The purpose of this study was to interpret the transformation of Cooperative Groups for Agricultural Production(CGAP) with the change of the Agricultural Productive Force. The specific objectives were; 1) To investigate the change of agricultural labour-power, 2) To investigate the change of agricultural mechanization and arable land, 3) To interpret the transformation and content of CLAP. The population of farmhouseholds has decreased continuously since the late 1960s. Especially, with the move-outs of youth ages of twenties to forties, the condition of agricultural labour-power has been more serious. The processing of agricultural mechanization was a small scale step in the 1970s, but after the 1980s there was a spread of middle-large machines. However the usage rate of agricultural machines was constrained by the bad conditions of arable land. From the 1970s to now, the CGAP have bean processed by many kinds of patterns. In the 1970s, the lack of labour-power caused the creation of the Co-Working Team. After the late of 1970s, the wage of agricultural employees was raised, because the working population of agriculture was cut down. Also, the induction of agricultural machine was promoted. As a result, in the 1980s, the Machine-Using Team occurred due to these conditions of agricultural productive force. In the late of 1980s, the population decreased more rapidly, and the use of large machines were spread. Than farmhouseholds laking labour-power gave a trust to other farmhouseholds and Teams which had machines. In 1990, Given-Trust Cooperations were enacted by law, and in order to overcome the lack of labour-power, and solve the problem of the successors of agriculture, Cooperative Organizations were also enacted by law. Finally, in Korea from the 1970s to now, as the agricultural productive force has barn changed, the Co-Working Team was transformed into the Machine-Using Team, and the Machine-Using Team was transformed into the Given-Trust Cooperation, and the Cooperative Organization.
This paper is to study globalization motives and strategies of Japanese and Korean industries by analyzing the causes and patterns of foreign direct investment (FDI) of the firms of the two countries during the 1980s and 1990s. First we develop a FDI function from the profit maximizing model of firms. Then we use regression analysis to determine internally driving-out factors and externally-inducing factors. Japanese FDI strategy has gone through three different stages; from natural resource-seeking investment in the 1950s and 1960s to market-expansion investment in the 1970s and 1980s and to a combination of cost-reducing (low-cost labor-seeking) investment and market-penetrating investment in the 1990s. On the other hand, Korean FDI behavior has gone through four different stages; from the learning stage with small investments in the 1970s, to natural resource-seeking investment in the early and mid 1980s, to the growth stage in the late 1980s and the early 1990s, to the maturity stage of the mid and late 1990s. The last two stages were characterized by a combination of cost-reducing investment and market-seeking investment. As a late comer, Korea began its FDI two decades later than Japan, but caught up the patterns of Japanese FDI by the mid 1990s and is in a competing position with Japan. Our findings show that both Japanese FDI and Korean FDI in Asia and other developing countries tendto be in labor-intensive sectors where their firms are losing their comparative advantages at home. The main motive for FDI into these regions is low-cost resource seeking. On the other hand, both Japanese FDI and Korean FDI in the U.S. and Europe tend to be knowledge-intensive sectors where Japanese and Korean firms attempt to internalize transaction and information costs by globalizing its production. The main motive for FDI into these regions is market-seeking. Firms in both countries have increased their investments in Mexico and Western and Eastern Europe in order to penetrate large economic blocs such as the EU and NAFTA area. Korean firms are more aggressive in expanding into new and untested markets than are their counterpart in Japan. Evidence of this can be seen in the scarcity of Japanese FDI and abundance of Korean FDI in Eastern Europe and China.
This study has attempted to show general characteristics of health centre directors who have served the post of directorship during the last 40 years. Of 3,000 such health centre directors, information on about 2,500 directors was collected. While average length of service for health center directors has increased, that of vacancy period has decreased. Rural areas have a shorter average length of service than the urban area. Rural areas have twice longer length of vacancy period per health center. Kangwon-do has the longest average length of vacancy period since 1980(2.79 months/year), and Daejeon has the shortest length of vacancy period(0.21 months/year). Chung-buk has no physician directors. The civil servant's rank for the directorship has promoted from the fifth level to the fourth level since 1990. A comparison between the physician director & non-physician director was made as follows : first, the proportion of physician directors had maintained rather high before 1980 s; 62.5% in 1963, 78.3% in 1970, 70.4% in 1980. It decreased to 44.1% in 1990 and 47.6% in 1997. Instead, non-physician directors has abruptly increased since 1980s (12.4% in 1980, 55.4% in 1990 and 50.8% in 1997). Second, physician directors mainly locate in the urban area(58.0% in 1997), but non-physician directors mainly in the rural area(67.2% in 1997). Third, since 1980, the average length of service for physician directors and for non-physician directors has become similar. Fourth, the mean age of physician directors is 45.1 years, and that of non-physician directors 55.7 years. The latter is 10 years older than the former.
We had reported the infection rates of trematode larvae, Cercaria tapidis and C. harengulae in the gonad tissues of Tapes philippinarum and Solen strictus in the estuary of Kum river, the west coast in Korea in 1980~1982. At the same sites from January 1994 to January 1995, we investigated the variation of the infection rates of these trematode larvae in the two clams. The results are follows. The infection rate of C. tapidis parasitized in T. philippinarum increased in 2.4 times (14.0%) higher than that (5.7%) in 1981. Monthly maxium infection rate was 32.0% in October 1994. Comparing the rate (23.3%) in December 1981, the rate in 1994 showed a higher trend than that in 1981. The mean infection rate of C. harengulae in T. philippinarum showed 2.3% in 1994. Comparing that (5%) in 1980, it showed a decreased rate than that in 1980. And monthly maximum infection infection rate of this clam was 6.7% in May 1994, compared with the rate (19.0%) in March 1980. It appeared furthermore decreased rate in 1994. The mean infection rate of the year of C. harengulae in S. strictus was 6.9% in 1994, while it was 10.2% between 1981 and 1982. It showed a decreased trend in 1994. Monthly maximum infection rate was 23.4% in August 1981, while it was 13.3% in April 1994. It showed a decreased trend in 1994 also. In case of C. tapidis the more large sizes of shell length the more infection rates were higher as same in the investigation in 1980, while in C. harengulae the smaller sizes, the more infection rates showed a higher trend.

This study investigated and summarized the history of peasant movement which had been done by various peasant associations Yesan, Hongsong, and Tangjin from the beginning of Korean Catholic Peasant Movement from 1970 to 1995. First of all, we classified all the peasant movements(Yesan ; 120 times, Hongsong; 113 times and Tangjin; 107 times / total; 340 times) into 5 categories composed of movement time, movement type, movement method, the number of participators, and the movement subjects(issues). The frequency of peasant movement from 1990 to 1995, occupied 65.6%, which shows that the peasant movement was the most active during the time. The frequency of movement type, were we could find out, self-dependence type(62.9%), resistance type(15.6%) and request type(21.5%). The active way like congregation, demonstration, sit-in, rice file up struggle occupied 28.8% and it got the first place in movement way. In the movement subject category, the construction of organizations and solidarity activity amounted to 37.8% and democratization item(the union democratization and the social democratization related peasant) covered 16.8%. The 98 times of peasant movement were done in the active ways such as congregation and demonstration. However we cannot find these active ways in 1970s. In 1980s, the frequency of each item (congregation, demonstration, publicity and propaganda) was 28 times. But in 1990s, the frequency of congregation, or demonstration was higher than the others. The number of participators in peasant movement increased during 1980s∼1990s. The movement of which participators were 100∼499 was 32 times in 1980s and 70 times in 1990s each time. Such large scale movement amounted to over 30%. Furthermore, the large scale movement in which over 500 people participated amounted to 12 times in 1990s.

One-hundred and twenty-four trimethoprim-resistant Shigella sonnei isolates extracted in Korea during the last two decades were investigated for their epidemiological relationship and mechanisms of resistance to trimethoprim. The S. sonnei isolates were distributed into two groups by three different epidemiological tools: biotyping, antibiogram, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. One group contained the isolates from the 1980s and the other group included the isolates from the 1990s. The geometric mean MICs of trimethoprim in S. sonnei isolates from the 1980s and 1990s were found to be $672.9{\mu}g/ml\;and\;>2,048{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Trimethoprim resistance was associated with dfrA5, dfrA12, and dfrA13 genes in the isolates from the 1980s, dfrA1, dfrA5, and dfrA12 in the isolates from 1991, and dfrA1 and dfrA12 in the isolates from 1992 to 1999. The dfrA1 gene was located downstream of the intI2 gene in Tn7, which was located on chromosome. Some dfrA12 genes were found as gene cassettes in the class 1 integron. The dfrA5 and dfrA13 genes were located on conjugative plasmids. These results suggested that a clonal change occurred in S. sonnei isolates in Korea during the last two decades and that dfr genes located on different transposable genetic elements had gradually changed.
