  • The people who complain of pain due to voice causes such as vocal cord nodules is increasing year by year. If the voice is changed, it is possible to give to colleagues discomfort or inconvenience during conversation. In this paper, we propose a way to reduce discomfort by improving the husky voice during the conversation. A VBF (voice boosting filter) is firstly designed to improve the husky voices. This filter may further emphasize the formant frequency components than the frequency components around the formant frequency, because the value is relatively greater than the other frequency. And a fixed-point type DSP chipset, TMS320F2812 is applied to the system, the operating frequency is 150MHz. The system was implemented as a compact for use as a portable, its size is $2.5cm{\times}10cm$. Through the test using three husky voices with some type of statement, it was satisfactory in processing speed and sound quality improvement.

  • Arcology (architecture plus ecology) is a new term that was coined by the visionary architect, Paolo Soleri (1919-2013), and aims to provide a useful solution for a sustainable dense urban environment. Inspired by the environmental and humanistic crisis in the 1970s, he continuously promoted ideal future city forms with arcology in mind. Arcosanti is one of the many arcologies he proposed and is the only one that was constructed. This paper constructs arcology as a sustainable architectural theory with Arcosanti as a verifiable case study. Despite the fact that arcosanti is only partially built, and far from completion, it still possesses some of the values that Soleri's vision may offer to future generations.

  • Poly(anthranilic acid) was synthesized by rapid mixing method using 5-sulphosalicylic acid as a dopant. The synthesized polymer was characterized by various techniques like FT-IR, UV-Visible, and X-ray diffraction $etc.$, The FT-IR studies reveal that the 5-sulphosalicylic acid is well doped within the polymer. The morphological property was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopic technique. The electrochemical properties of the polymer were studied by cyclic voltammetric method. The synthesized polymer was used to modify glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and the modified electrode was found to exhibit electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of uric acid (UA).

  • This paper proposes a background image extraction algorithm for traffic environment analysis in a school zone. The proposed algorithm solves the problems by level changes and stationary objects to be occurred frequently in traffic environment. For the former, it renews rapidly the background image toward the current frame using a fast Sima-Delta algorithm and for the latter, it excludes the stationary objects from the background image by detecting dynamic regions using a just previous frame and a background image averaged for a long time. The results of experiments show that the proposed algorithm adapts quickly itself to level change well, and reduces about 40~80% of SAD in background region in comparison with the conventional algorithms.

  • Due to Japanese imperialism's invasion of Korea and the policy of exterminating national culture, many independence activists from Korean medicine participated in the Manchurian Independence Army activities and the fight for freedom. Kang Woo-kyu, who threw a bomb at the governor-General of Korea on September 2, 1919, can be cited as a leader who learned East Asian medicine. Kim Kwanje, who organized a secret organization by opening an East Asian medicine clinic in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, was involved in the struggle of the medical corps while working as a medical student. He is accused of providing a shelter by treating members of the Uiryeoldan. In 1919, the Manchurian Independence Army unit, which launched the March 1st Movement armed struggle, was established, and those who served as military doctors in various organizations can be found. Park Se-jung, who participated as an independent soldier at the age of 47, treated wounded soldiers and patients as a military doctor. A branch office was also created by raising military funds and participating in the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. Jang Hyong was able to raise independent military funds, campaign for the provisional government's independence petition, and lecture across the country mostly disguised as an East Asian medicine doctor, which led to several imprisonments for "fraud charges under the guise of similar medical practices".

  • The March 1st Movement in Korea and the May 4th Movement in China, which both occurred in 1919, have often been thought to reflect each other like two mirrors. This paper is an attempt to reexamine the relationship between these two events in terms of simultaneity, and thus to articulate their world-historical significance. Their distinctive historical character is also understood through the perspective of an interlocking East Asia, by which is meant that although imperial Japan, semi-colonial China, and colonial Korea were all connected to the modern world-system, these three states each occupied different positions within the hierarchy of interstate relations. The differences between the anti-Japanese national movements of colonial Korea and those of semi-colonial China deserve particular attention, since they help to reveal the complexities of (semi-)colonial modernity, and may provide some clues for overcoming modernity. In this context the theory of the Double Project of Modernity is useful, which describes the process of simultaneously adapting to and overcoming modernity. The (re)remembrance of the March 1st Movement and the May 4th Movement is more than a historical issue: it is also an existential issue. The historical significance of these two events should be beyond doubt, and to make this clear it is proposed to rename them respectively as the March 1st Revolution and the May 4th Revolution. This renaming is surely justified by the way that people gathered at these events.

  • Light bending by gravity was the key prediction of general relativity. Solar eclipse expedition of 1919 provided the observational support for the theory of general relativity. Diverse gravitational lensing, i.e., light bending, phenomena have been speculated and predicted by general relativity and ultimately discovered many years later. Gravitationally lensed quasars, luminous arcs, weak lensing, and microlensing have provided invaluable information about the distribution of matter, especially of dark matter, and the cosmology. Gravitational lensing is one of the most spectacular manifestation of general relativity and will remain as an extremely useful astrophysical tools in the future.
