  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the underwear design shown in historical dramas set in Europe between the $16^{th}$ and the $18^{th}$ century, woman's bodies were highly restricted, in order to analyze the symbolism of the movie costume and provide basic data for the future education of the department of movie costume design. For a study method, literature relating to movie costumes and underwear as well as captured images from 29 historical dramas set in Europe between the $16^{th}$ and the $18^{th}$ century was reviewed. Among them, data from 17 movies where underwear and crinoline were observed was analyzed. Historical movies, set in the $18^{th}$ century Europe exposed underwear more frequently and decisively than movies set in the $16^{th}$ and $17^{th}$ centuries. For the figure wearing underwear, its expression effect was maximized by the implication function of costumes. Underwear can easily express the time and space background and symbolize the character's social and economic position, attitudes, and values. In addition, the exposure of underwear can reveal characters' internal expressions, such as mental status, taste, temper, intention, mood, time and space display. The result of observing the underwear shown in movies reveals that underwear plays a subjective role in expressing ideal femininity as a woman of a particular age, modesty, social position symbolism and eroticism that depended on the situation. It is expected that the study will provide an opportunity to reconsider the function of underwear, which is different from the meaning of costume history, and its role as a means of communication by considering the change of underwear by age.

  • This study examined the meteorological disaster of Jeju Island in Chosun Dynasty based on historical documents, and analyzed how its government and Jeju Islanders responded to this. Recording cases of abnormal weather days of Jeju Island in Chosun Dynasty were most in 17th Century, and then in 18th Century, 16th Century, 15th Century, and 19th Century in order. For the type of meteorological disaster, storm damage was most serious, and then flood disaster, drought disaster, and snow damage were in order. For the region, Jejumok was mostly damaged from storm and flood, and Daejeonghyeon was mostly from drought. Once meteorological disaster occurred, it was a common thing that it continued with famine. The Chosun government relieved Jeju Islanders by moving the grains of mainland into Jeju Island, and for this, installed Galdujin warehouse, Naripo warehouse, and Jemin warehouse. Also, it tried to resolve chronic famine by moving Jeju people into mainland such as Pyeong'an-do. Corresponding to severe weather, the farmers of Jeju Island implemented agricultural methods such as Dapjeon, Baryeong, molding, and wind-breaking; and the seamen conducted unique arts of navigation such as Hwanjeon, and gravel shipment.

  • Methods for harvesting and storage of rice were also originally introduced from the ancient China like other practices of agricultural techniques. Thus, optimum time or rice harvesting was adopted by appropriate draining to prevent the losses, and efficient tools were utilized for harvesting and manufacturing. In addition, our unique and original techniques for rice storage were learned and handed down, which prevented winds and rains, and allowed good ventilation. In the 15th and 16th centuries, treatment of smartweed extracts as emphasized to prevent insect damage for stored barley and rice cutting immediately at harvest was encouraged to prevent shattering of rice grains. In the 18th and 19th centuries, means for prevention of damages by water, insects and rats when grains stored in the field were suggested. Also, studies for ecology of various rice cultivars and storage techniques for a long period of time were necessarily emphasized to assume the optimum time of harvest regionally and to cooperatively work timely.

  • This research has studied the building awareness of Nu-Jeong that a view of nature and aesthetic consciousness to unite the nature are inherent by considering Nu-Jeong of scholars who left fame and wealth behind and retired to hermitage in the backwoods in the 16~18 Century. This is to clarify correlation with leaving nature as it is, namely, an ideal state that scholars at the time would enjoy, through landscape awareness accepted into Nu-Jeong literature. In addition, this research has tracked the ideologic flow that acts on space formation by clarifying Korean unique meanings inherent to Nu-Jeong's cultural landscape. As a suggestion for this, the interpretation through 'Pungsu location Nu-Jeong name's analysis Nu-Jeong literature analysis', etc. was tried, so its integrated conclusion is as follows. It is not a chance that scholars of Joseon have left numerous literature works singing the nature. They already had huge interest and knowledge on the nature, and achieved active poetic exchange by sublimating the praise of nature as literature. Nu-Jeong, which was a place of exchange like this, had cleanliness of the nature and ideological purity as an oppositional space on turbid political realities. The Nu-Jeong literature drew the nature into a literature space as it is, without doing abstraction or ideation on the nature. The owner of Nu-Jeong exclusively possessed such natural landscape in grim and independent postures, so it provided a clue of Nu-Jeong cultural landscape that this research aimed to discuss. Scholars who aimed to raise wide and large vigor filled in between the sky and earth got to convince that people are born from the nature, grow in the nature and finally return to the nature. What people are born from the nature and finally return to the nature is just consistent with Taoistic and Zhua-ngzi thoughts denying human work, and leaving nature as it is or nature itself remained intact which is an ideal state. The construction at the time is a vessel containing the spirit of the times of the era. This thesis has proved that the Nu-Jeong culture of scholars located on the central line of Korean landscape was the flower of Joseon's scholar culture by interpreting it semantically.

  • This paper is focused on objective and meaning of its compilation through reviewing system, composition, method of description, and content of "Jwagyebudam". "Jwagyebudam" has all round form of a history and character book by recording via arranging figures from the end of 16th century to the middle of 18th century in a chronological order. Figure were not only assigned at close range by steretyping people into groups to a degree in it, but also recorded in a chronological order. In view of method of description, "Jwagyebudam" concentrated a theme by recording via separating different people associated from a figure and content of the same event by using the same method like 'Hogeonbeom(互見法)' shown in "Sagiyeoljeon(史記列傳)". In addition, it obtained effect to objectify evaluation of figures included. In a method of embodying figures, it has described concretely and in a three dimensions figures by recording anecdotes and poems associated with them via focusing on lifelong characteristic aspect of corresponding figures. In other words, "Jwagyebudam" can be called by biographies or character books, writings specialized in characters center among writings of method to weave freely experience. • In this article we tried to discover the predilection of the Goncourt brothers for the noble culture of the eighteenth century. It is well known that two brothers sought to bring forth the aristocratic world formerly reigned by Louis XV and Louis XVI. The favorite themes of the Goncourts included rococo, rocaille, Kings' mistresses, and antiques. Were the brothers fascinated by the culture of the eighteenth century only because they were themselves in the lineage of an aristocratic family? Are there any other reasons behind their predilection for the eighteenth century? This research started from these questions, because we believe that, in their preoccupation with such culture, there must be other reasons beyond their aesthetic predilection. We first studied ideological grounds to answer these questions. Our attention was particularly drawn to the relationship between their attachment to aristocratic culture and their rejection of bourgeois culture in their time. We then attempted to discern the meaning of their studies on the French Revolution, in the wake of the revolution of 1848. By means of this approach, we found that they overestimated the vibrant and energetic culture of the eighteenth century, and they wanted to propose such culture to their contemporaries, in an effort to forget the terrible memory of the year 1848. We can therefore say that the Goncourt brothers proposed a remedy for the psychological torment of their time.

  • This research focuses on the relationship between mathematics and visual art from a perspective of chaos theory which emerged under the influence of post-modernism. Culture and history, which transform dynamically with the passing of time, are models of complexity. Especially, when the three periods of Medieval, Renaissance, and 17-18 Centuries are observed, the Renaissance period is phase transition phenomenon era between Medieval and 17-18 Centuries. The transition stage between the late Medieval times and the Renaissance; and the stage between the Renaissance and the Modern times are also phase transitions. These phenomena closely resemble similarity in Fractal theory, which includes the whole in a partial structure. Phase transition must be preceded by fluctuation. In addition to the pioneers' prominent act of creation in the fields of mathematics and visual an serving as drive behind change, other socio-cultural factors also served as motivations, influencing the transformation of the society through interdependency. In particular, this research focuses on the fact that scientific minds of artists in the Renaissance stimulated the birth of Perspective Geometry.
