  • An integrated circuit for magnetic stripe storage system is implemented. All the analog and digital circuits are integrated in one chip. The analog block contains preamplifier, peak detecter, comparator and reference generater. And digital block includes reference window signal generater, up/down counter for F/2F signal measurement, bit-error detection logic, and control logic. Both the encoding and decoding functions for F/2F signal processing are provided. An AGC(automatic gain control) circuit which was included in conventional circuits is eliminated due to optimized circuit design. Misreading prevention circuits are also proposed by fixing up new reference bit when broken bits are detected. The prototype chip is implemented using $0.8{\mu}m$ N-well CMOS technology and operates from 3.3 V to 7.5 V of supply voltage. It occupies a die area of $3.04mm^2(1.6mm{\times}1.9mm)$ and dissipates 8 mW with a 5 V supply voltage.

And phase-frequency detector, integrated passive loop filter, LC-tuned VCO having a tuning range from 1.584 to 2.4 ㎓ at 1.8-V power supply, and higher-order sigma-delta modulator are contained. Finally, designed frequency synthesizer provides 5 ㎒ channel spacing with -122.6 dBc/Hz at 1 ㎒ in the WCDMA band and total output power is 28 mW.

  • A 1.8V 2-Gb/s scalable low voltage signaling (SLVS) transmitter (TX) is designed for mobile applications requiring high speed and low power consumption. It consists of 4-lane TX for data transmission, 1-lane TX for a source synchronous clocking, and a 8-phase clock generator. The proposed SLVS TX has the scaling voltage swing from 50 mV to 650 mV and supports a high speed (HS) mode and a low power (LP) mode. An output impedance calibration scheme for the SVLS TX is proposed to improve the signal integrity. The proposed SLVS TX is implemented by using a $0.18-{\mu}m$ 1-poly 6-metal CMOS with a 1.8V supply. The simulated data jitter of the implemented SLVS TX is about 8.04 ps at the data rate of 2-Gbps. The area and power consumption of the 1-lane of the proposed SLVS TX are $422{\times}474{\mu}m^2$ and 5.35 mW/Gb/s, respectively.

  • PLLs have been widely used for many applications including communication systems. This paper presents a VCO with an improved negative skewed delay scheme and a PLL using this VCO. The proposed VCO and PLL are intended for replacing traditional LC oscillators and PLLs used in communication systems and other applications. The circuit designs of the VCO and PLL are based on 0.18um CMOS technology with 1.8V supply voltage. The proposed VCO employs subfeedback loops using pass-transistors and needs two opposite control voltages for the pass transistors. The subfeedback loops speed up oscillation depending on the control voltages and thus provide a high oscillation frequency. The two voltage controls have opposite frequency gain characteristics and result in low phase-noise. The 7-stage VCO in 0.18um CMOS technology operates from $3.2GHz\~6.3GHz$ with phase noise of about -128.8 dBc/Hz at 1MHz frequency onset. For 1.8V supply voltage, the current consumption is about 3.8mA. The proposed PLL has dual loop-filters for the proposed VCO. The PLL is operated at 5GHz with 1.8V supply voltage. These results indicate that the proposed VCO can be used for radio frequency operations replacing LC oscillators. The circuits have been designed and simulated using 0.18um TSMC library.

  • In this paper, one of the core components of a mobile communication system, VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) IC is designed. The VCO IC was designed, have realized as LC turned oscillator using varicap. LC sinusoidal tuned oscillator generally requires external inductors and thus remainding circuit is implemneted in monolithic IC. The circuit is fabricated using an 15 mask IC process and has a die size of 1150um${\times}$780um. The tests showed that VCO was operated at frequencies in the regions between 880MHz-915MHz in the control voltage range of 1V to 3V at 5V supply voltage and as the power supply was varied from 4.5V to 5.5V, the frequency varied 425KHz/V. The VCO IC has frequency shift of 1.97MHz/T, carrier level of -7dBm and power consumption of 16.7mA. Also it has phase noise of -80dBc/Hz, offset at 50KHz and harmonic response of center frequency is -41dBm. For the future development of the transceiver 1 chip, the previously mentioned external devices need to be incorporated into Si MMIC.

Developed modulator is used to perform high-resolution analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) of high frequency band signal in a radar system. It has supply voltage of 2.7V, and has body-effect compensated switch configuration with low voltage and low distortion. The modulator has been implemented in a $0.25{\mu}m$ double-poly and triple-metal standard CMOS process, and it has die area of $1.9{\times}1.5mm^{2}$. It showed better total harmonic distortion of 20dB than the conventional bootstrapped circuit at the supply voltage of 2.7V.

  • A 120kV/70A high voltage switch has been installed at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI) in Taejon to supply power with Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research(KSTAR) Neutral Beam Injection(NBI) system. NBI system requires fast cutoff of the flower supply voltage for protection of the grid when arc detected and fast turn-on the voltage for sustaining the beam current. Therefore the high voltage switch and arc current detection circuit are important part of the NBI power supply. There are much need for high voltage solid state switches in NBI system and a broad area of applications. This switch consisted of 100 series connected MOSFETs and adopted the proposed simple and reliable gate drive circuit without bias supply. Various results taken during the commissioning phase with a 100kW resistive load and NBI source arc shown. This paper presents the detailed design of 120kV/70A high voltage MOSFETs switch and simple gate drive circuit. Problems with the high voltage switch and gate driver during thefabrication and test and solutions are also presented.

  • This work describes an 8b 200 MHz 0.18 urn CMOS analog-to-digital converter (ADC) based on a pipelined architecture for flat panel display applications. The proposed ABC employs an improved bootstrapping technique to obtain wider input bandwidth than the sampling tate of 200 MHz. The bootstrapuing technique improves the accuracy of the input sample-and-hold amplifier (SHA) and the fast fourier transform (FFT) analysis of the SHA outputs shows the 7.2 effective number of bits with an input sinusoidal wave frequency of 500 MHz and the sampling clock of 200 MHz at a 1.7 V supply voltage. Merged-capacitor switching (MCS) technique increases the sampling rate of the ADC by reducing the number of capacitors required in conventional ADC's by 50 % and minimizes chip area simultaneously. The simulated ADC in a 0.18 um n-well single-poly quad-metal CMOS technology shows an 8b resolution and a 73 mW power dissipation at a 200 MHz sampling clock and a 1.7 V supply voltage.
