  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the using pattern of alternative therapies in the elderly. Method: 197 subjects, persons who were more than 60 years old, we interviewed. We modified and complemented Shin's(2000) instrument in accordance with purpose of this study. Data were analyzed statistically by using SAS program. Result: 1. It was shown that 66.84% of subjects have utilized one or more types of alternative therapy. 2. It was shown that the most frequently used types are acupuncture (48.83%), and ethmoid bone therapy (42.75%). 3. Acupuncture was shown to be the most satisfactory type of therapy (14.50%). 4. There was a significant difference in the use ratio by sex; female 73.47% and male 60.20%. 5. Among users of alternative therapies, the most frequent responses to each question were as follows; 1. Motive of Use - "for complete cure of symptoms" (32.31%). 2. Side effects - "no side effects" (95.97%). Conclusion: We found that elderly persons used alternative therapies more frequently than others perpulations. Diet therapy and Hand therapy were most commonly used in older people. Although the elderly use alternative therapy, they cannot place confidence in its scientific reliability. Therefore, we need to examine the effects of alternative therapy.

  • Objectives The authors propose a new checklist model adapted for safety miniscalpel acupuncture procedure of cervical and lumbar spine. Methods On the basis of available literature and expert opinion, a prototype checklist was developed. The checklist was adapted on the basis of observation of daily practice. Results The checklist has three parts: 1. prevention and management of healthcare associated infections, 2. verification list before and after miniscalpel acupuncture treatment, 3. adverse event monitoring after procedure. We presented a summary checklist based on the above contents. Conclusions We propose the first patient safety checklist for minicalpel acupuncture treatment of cervical and lumbar spine. The checklist will be complemented using further research methodologies.

  • In the teacher's guide of mathematics textbook for the 1st grade of the middle school, the clear and logical reason why the multiplication of negative number to negative number makes positive number, and $a^{-m}$ with a>0 and m>0, is defined by ${\frac{1}{a^m}}$ is not given. When we define the multiplication or the power by successive addition or successive multiplication of the same number, respectively, we encounter this ambiguity, in the case that the number of successive operations is negative, In this paper, we name this number, negative counting number, and we make the following more logical and intuitive definition, which is "negatively many successive operations is defined by positively many successive inverse operations." According to this new definition, we define the multiplication by the successive addition or the successive subtraction of the same number, when the multiplier is positive or negative respectively, and the power by the successive multiplication or the power is positive or negative, respectively. In addition, using this new definition and following the E.R.S Instruction strategy which revised and complemented the Bruner's E.I.S Instruction strategy, we develope new teaching model available in the 1st grade class of middle school where the concept of integers, three operations of integers are introduced.ntroduced.

  • Purpose: Health is one of the most important interests in current and future human society. Various efforts, which to maintain and promote their good health conditions, continue to be tried in future urban and architectural environment. The purpose of this study is to establish an integrated framework of research approaches for healthy urban and architectural environment that continuously promotes health according to people's entire life course. Methods: This was done by literature reviews, which is related to interdisciplinary researches for the determinants of health and healthy environment. Results: As a result of this study, an integrated research model, as a methodology, was proposed. This explains the concept of integrated research approaches for urban and architectural environment in the respect of people's health. Integrated health concept includes not only the area of health care environment to have recovery and treatment but also the daily living environment for people who have potential of being ill, and finally the city environment for entire people as health supporting elements including safety and primary prevention. Implications: Under the basis of this model, according to the life course, various researches on sustainable healthy urban and architectural environment should be followed from now on. The model should also be continuously complemented and developed into a standard of healthy environment.

  • Real time information on disaster situation is very important in disaster prevention effort. Generally, disaster related organizations use mobile devices to collect various disaster informations of disaster site. However, current disaster collection systems do not provide effective functionality to connect with another disaster information system. Therefore, disaster-related organizations have to make smartphone application for collection and administration of disaster information and then connect it with another information system. If this system is commercialized, vulnerability of previous system can be complemented. Thus, this paper focused on designing a prototype system for information collection and management in disaster site using smartphone applicatiom.

  • Magnaporthe grisea, the casual agent of rice blast, forms an appressorium to penetrate its host. Much has been learned about environmental cues and signal transduction pathways, especially those involving CAMP and MAP kinases, on appressorium formation during the last decade. More recently, pharmacological data suggest that calcium/calmodulin-dependent signaling system is involved in its appressorium formation. To determine the role of phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) on appressorium formation, a gene (WPLCl) encoding PI-PLC was cloned and characterized from M. grisea strain 70-15. Sequence analysis showed that MPLCl has alt five conserved domains present in other phospholipase C genes from several filamentous fungi and mammals. Null mutants (mplcl) generated by targeted gene disruption exhibited pleiotropic effects on conidial morphology, appressorium formation, fertility and pathogenicity. mplcl mutants developed nonfunctional appressoria and are also defective in infectious growth in host tissues. Defects in appressorium formation and pathogenicity in mplcl mutants were complemented by a mouse PLCdelta-1 cDNA under the control of the MPLCl promoter. These results suggest that cellular signaling mediated by MPLCl plays crucial and diverse roles in development and pathogenicity of M. grisea, and functional conservation between fungal and mammalian Pl-PLCs.

  • Retroviral integrases insert viral DNA into target DNA. In this process they recognize their own DNA specifically via functional domains. In order to analyze these functional domains, we constructed six chimeric integrases by swapping domains between HIV-1 and HFV integrases, and two point mutants of HFV integrase. Chimeric integrases with the central domain of HIV-1 integrase had strand transfer and disintegration activities, in agreement with the idea that the central domain determines viral DNA specificity and has catalytic activity. On the other hand, chimeric integrases with the central domain of HFV integrase did not have any enzymatic activity apart from FFH that had weak disintegration activity, suggesting that the central domain of HFV integrase was defective catalytically or structurally. However, these inactive chimeras were efficiently complemented by the point mutants (D164A and E200A) of HFV integrase, indicating that the central domain of HFV integrase possesses potential enzymatic activity but is not able to recognize viral or target DNA without the help of its homologous N-terminal and C-terminal domains.

  • The recombinant plasmid pLEX2FP complements the mutation in Zoogloea ramigera 115MM1, and the complemented mutant produces an exopolysaccharide that shows higher affinity for the calcofluor dye than the exopolysaccharide from Z. ramigera 115SLR, resulting in higher fluorescence intensity under UV light. A compositional and structural analysis of the exopolysaccharide from Z. ramigera 115MM1 showed that the different fluorescent properties were due to a lower content of acetyl groups when compared with Z. ramigera 115SLR exopolysaccharide. These results were in agreement with a sequence analysis of the gene carried in the plasmid pLEX2FP, which appeared to encode an O-acyltransferase highly homologous to the 3-O-acyltransferase of Streptomyces mycarofaciens. The gene encoding the acyltransferase from Z. ramigera 115SLR was expressed as a GST-fusion protein with 70,000 daltons in E. coli.
