  • In this study, rat hepatocytes known to have active glucose metabolism were obtained to investigate the hypoglycemic action of fat soluble fraction of red ginseng by using the liver perfusion technique and incubated in two different media-one containing insulin and glucagon (control group), and the other containing glucagon only The activities of main regulating enzymes, such as glucokinase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenate, and glucose 6-phosphatase, related to metabolic pathways of glucose in these two kinds of hepatocytes were compared between these two groups and the effects of addition of fat soluble fraction ($10^1$~$10^4$%) from red ginseng to these two groups on these enzymes were also detected. The results were as follows. The specific activity of enzymes such as glucokinase, flucorse 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase related to glucose-consuming pathways of insulin-deficient group was much less than control one. However, their decreased activity was recovered after the addition of fat-soluble fraction at all range of concentrations. The specific activity of these enzymes after the addition of ginseng components to the control group was also increased. On the other hand, the specific activity of glucose 6-phosphatase related to glucose-producing pathway of insulin-deficient group was much higher than control one, but their increased activity was decreased obviously after the addition of fat soluble fraction at all range of concentrations. The same results were observed after the addition of fat-soluble fraction to the control group. These results suggest that the red ginseng saponin components might be effective on diabetic hyperglycemia by regulating the activity of enzymes related to glucose metabolism directly and/or indirectly. The effects of fat-soluble fraction ($10^2$%) and ginsenosides (mixture, $Rb_1$ and $Rg_1$, $10^4$%) on hypoglycemic action were compared. As a result, they showed considerable effect on hyperglycemia, but the best eff ect on the activities of glucokinase and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase was appeared by ginsenoside $Rb_1$ and that of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and glucose 6-phosphatase was by ginsenoside mixture.

  • Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of cellulose addition on high (Exp. I) and low (Exp. II and III) dry matter barley straw silages. In Exp. I : 1 kg barley straw + 16 g glucose + 600 g water + 0 g as control (E0G), + 2 g (E2G), + 4 g (E4G), + 6 g (E6G), and + 8 g (E8G) of cellulose as treatments were ensiled. In Exp. II and III, 10 g glucose was and was not added, respectively, into 2 kg barley straw + 0 g (E8W, E8T) of cellulose as treatments. Samples were stored for 10 (Exp. I) and 7 (Exp. II and III) months at $21^{\circ}C$. The effect of cellulose addition on the fermentation and breakdown of the polysaccharides component in the silos at ensiling occurred more markedly at low dry matter silages rather than at the high ones. All cellulose treated silages were well preserved (pH below 5 in Exp. I and below 4 in Exp. II and III), while lactic acid and ethanol concentration increased. The fibrous fraction (ADF, NDF, crude fiber, hemicellulose, and cellulose) significantly (p<0.01) decreased (except hemicellulose content in Exp. I) compared with corresponding untreated silages. In vitro dry matter digestibility values (IVDMD) were similar for all silages. The present study showed that cellulose addition improved the potential nutritional and fermentation quality of barley straw silage.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of wheat bran addition on the fermentative quality and dry matter digestibility(Dh4D) of rye silage. This hexbage was ensiled by the conventional methods in small glass silo of 0.82 liter with addition of wheat bran of 0%, 5%. 01%, and 15%. mpectivery. The samples of rye silage were determined the pH, lactic acid, acetic acid and butyric acid. The DMD was evaluated by pepsin-cellulase technique method. The energy values (total digestible nutrients. TDN : digestible energy, DE : metabolizable energy, ME) were calculated by DMD. The results obtained were as follows : 1. The pH and butyric acid of rye silage were reduced with increasing of wheat bran addition, but the contents of lactic acid and total acid were increased. 2. TDN, DE and ME were increased with high rate of wheat bran addition. 3. Regression equation and correlation coefficients between Flieg's score(X) and DMD(Y) of silage were Y =48.7+0.157X(r=0.917, p<0.01). 4. Regression equation and correlation coefficients between level of wheat bran(X) and Flieg's score(Y) of silage were Y= 18.3+5.56X(r=0.929, p<0.01).

  • This research investigated the effect of Si addition on the microstructure, mechanical properties, electric and thermal conductivity of as-extruded Al 6013 alloys. As the content of Si increased, the area fraction of the second phase increased. As the Si content increased, the average grain size decreased remarkably, from 182 (no Si addition) to 142 (1.5Si), 78 (3.0Si) and 77 ㎛ (4.5Si) due to dynamic recrystallization by the dispersed second particles in the aluminum matrix during the hot extrusion. As the Si content increased, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength increased. The maximum values of yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were 224 MPa and 103 MPa for the 6013-4.5Si alloy. As the amount of Si added increased, the electrical and thermal conductivity decreased. The electrical and thermal conductivity of the Al6013-4.5Si alloy were 44.0 % IACS and 165.0 W/mK, respectively. The addition of Si to Al 6013 alloy had a significant effect on its thermal conductivity and mechanical properties.

  • Freeze-dried Kimchi powder has to be first produced to make Kimchi noodle. Two days, ten days, fifteen days and twenty-five days fermented Kimchi were analyzed respectively to obtain adequate material for freeze-dried Kimchi. Fourteen days' fermented Kimchi with pH 4.0∼4.7 and 0.5∼0.8% acidity was chosen for material for freeze-dried Kimchi, Fourteen days fermented Kimchi was first freeze-dried and powdered. Sensory evaluation was done to decide that 4% addition of the powdered material was optimal. The mixture of Kimchi noodle was analyzed into two perspectives; noodle and Kimchi. The analyzed factors of the mixture was a texture of noodle, color level, Kimchi flavor and its spiciness. The texture of noodle are nutty taste, softness, viscidity and oil flavor. Heavy oil flavor and nutty tasty decreased against the increase of Kimchi powder. Six percent addition of material showed a definite change to the mixture. More than six percent addition destroyed the texture of noodle into near crumbles. Four percent addition of material showed almost same as ordinary noodle texture. Therefore four percent addition of freeze-dried Kimchi was chosen optimal through sensory evaluation.

  • Automatic addition of glucose, ammonium and phosphate to alcohol distillery wastewater and their control at low concentrations have been carried increase the cell concentration of a baker's yeast cultivated in the wastewater. Glucose was automatically added using dissolved oxygen as the control parameter, and maintained below 300 mg/L. Ammonium was automatically added by a pH-stat method and maintained in the low range of 12.6~17.4 mM. An automated FIA system, which used an ascorbic acid-based method was developed for the automatic analysis nad addition of phosphate. With this system, the phosphate concentration was succesfully analysed and controlled afrer 19.4 hr in the range 23.3~43.4 mg/L. The cell concentration was increased by 33.0-fold by the addition of these three nutrients. The overall specific growth rate of the yeast was 0.19 $hr^{-1}$.

  • Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the effects of cellulase and brewers' grains addition on improvement of the fermentation quality and the nutritive value of barley straw silages made from dried or fresh straw. In Exp. I : 1 kg dried barley straw + 2 kg wet brewers' grains + 0 (I-0), 2 (I-2), 4 (I-4), 6 (I-6), and 8 (I-8) g of cellulase. In Exp. II : 2 kg fresh barley straw + 2 kg wet brewers' grains + 0 (II-0), 2 (II-2), 4 (II-4), 6 (II-6), and 8 (II-8) g of cellulase. Each prepared material was ensiled into vinyl bag silos (5 L capacity) and stored for 10 (Exp. I) or 7 (Exp. II) months at $21^{\circ}C$. The fermentation quality and nutritive value of barley straw silages produced were markedly improved by mixing them with wet brewers' grains, on the other hand the effect of cellulase addition on the fermentation and reduction of the cell wall components in the silos at ensiling more effectively occurred at low dry matter silages rather than at the high ones. All silages in both Exp. I and II were found well preserved as indicated by their low pH and high lactic acid concentration. Cellulase treated silages had a lower pH (p<0.05) and a higher lactic acid concentration (p<0.05) than those of without cellulase addition. NDF, ADF, and (Hemi)cellulose contents of cellulase treated silages reduced (p<0.05) compare to those of the corresponding silage without cellulase. Increasing levels of cellulase addition caused an increase in fermentation quality and reduction of cell wall components. In vitro dry mater digestibility was found similar in all silages. Fermentation quality and nutritive value of barley straw silages were improved by both wet brewers' grains and cellulase addition. Cellulase addition reduced the cell wall components silages, but did not improve the digestibility.

  • The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of Sn addition on the mechanical and corrosion properties of Mg-1Zn-1Zr-xSn (x = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 wt.%) alloys prepared by powder-in-tube rolling (PTR) method. The PTR-treated Mg alloys reached 98.3% of theoretical density. The hardness of the alloy increased with Sn addition. Two main intermetallic phases, Mg2Sn and Zn2Zr3, were formed in the alloys. The Mg2Sn intermetallic particles were observed along the grain boundaries, while the Zn2Zr3 particles were distributed in the Mg matrix. The addition of 1 wt. % Sn caused the corrosion potential to shift toward a more positive value, and the resulting alloy exhibited low corrosion current density.

  • In this study, in order to develop excellent lead-free composition ceramics for piezoelectric transformer, ($K_4CuNb_8O_{23}$) added $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})(Nb_{0.96}Sb_{0.04})O_3$ ceramics were fabricated using conventional mixed oxide method and their piezoelectric and dielectric properties were investigated as a fu+EY50nction of the amount of KCN addition. With increasing the amount of KCN addition, density and mechanical quality factor(Qm), electromechanical coupling factor (Kp) were increased up to 1.2 mol% and then decreased. At the 1.2 mol% KCN added specimen, mechanical quality factor (Qm), electromechanical coupling factor (Kp), density and dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}r$) showed the optimal values of 781, 0.445, $4.42\;g/cm^3$ and 443, respectively, for piezoelectric transformer application.

  • Bulk amorphous alloys with reasonable glass forming ability and large plasticity were found in Zr-Cu-Al alloys. Further increase in the GFA and the ductility is expected by appropriately choosing a fourth element. In this study, we select Be as the fourth element and added to the Zr-Cu-Al system to synthesize $(Zr_{57.4}Cu_{38.1}Al_{4.5})_{100-x}Be_x$(x=0~16) alloys and the glass forming ability and the plasticity were measured. With Be addition, the supercooled liquid region (${\Delta}T_x$), the plasticity and GFA as high as $134^{\circ}C$, 20.5%, 7 mm, respectively, can be obtained. Herein, we present the effect of Be addition on the variations of various mechanical properties and thermal characteristics of the $(Zr_{57.4}Cu_{38.1}Al_{4.5})_{100-x}Be_x$ alloys.
