  • Pristine and sulfur-doped (LiFe$PO_{3.98}S_{0.03}$) lithium iron phosphates were synthesized by a sol-gel method. The XRD pattern of the prepared materials suggested an orthorhombic structure with a Pnma space group and an absence of impurities. The Li/LiFe$PO_4$ or LiFe$PO_{3.98}S_{0.03}$ cells were employed for cycling studies at various temperatures (25, 50 and $60\;{^{\circ}C}$). In all cases, the Li/LiFe$PO_{3.98}S_{0.03}$ cell showed an improved performance with a stable discharge behavior of ~155 mA$hg^{-1}$. Nevertheless, pristine LiFeP$O_4$ cells presented poor discharge behavior at elevated temperatures, especially $60\;{^{\circ}C}$.

  • Diversity and community composition of bulb-associated fungi of Fritillaria Cirrhosae Bulbus source plants, which are used in traditional chinese medicine, in the eastern Himalaya-Hengduan Mountains, southwestern China, were estimated based on the internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequence analysis, using host plant species, geographic area, and plant phenology as variables. A total of 1,486 fungal sequences assigned to 251 operational taxonomical units (OTUs) were obtained from the bulbs. Fungal OTUs comprised 96.41% Ascomycotina, 3.52% Basidiomycotina, and 0.07% Zygomycotina. Sordariomycetes, Hypocreales, and Nectriaceae were the most frequent fungal lineages at each taxonomic rank. Fusarium, Ilyonectria, Tetracladium, Leptodontidium, and Tomentella were the top OTU-rich genera. Fusarium sp. 03, Ilyonectria rufa, Fusarium sp. 08, Ilyonectria sp. 03, and Leptodontidium orchidicola 03 represented the most frequent OTUs. Fusarium spp. were the most frequent general taxa. The distribution of fungal community exhibited preferences for host plant species, geographic area, and plant phenology. These findings are the foundation of our research on culturing and active metabolites of bulb-associated fungi of Fritillaria Cirrhosae Bulbus source plants.

  • In this study, in order to develop the capacitor composition ceramics with the good dielectric properties, $(Ba_{1-x}Ca_x)(Ti_{0.85}Zr_{0.12}Sn_{0.03})O_3$ (abbreviated as BCTZ) ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method. The effects of Ca substitution on the microstructure and dielectric properties was investigated. The X-ray diffraction patterns demonstrated that all the specimens showed perovskite phase, and secondary phases are indicated in the measurement range of X-ray diffraction. Also, all the specimens indicated an rhombohedron phase structure. It was identified from the X-ray diffraction patterns that the secondary phase formed in grain boundaries and then decreased the dielectric properties. For all the specimens, observed one peak was tetragonal cubic phase transition temperature($T_c$), which is located in the vicinity of room temperature.

  • Since DBA(Design Basis Accidents) has been studied rather separately from SA(Severe Accidents) in the conventional nuclear reactor safety analysis, the thermal hydraulics during transition between DBA and SA has not been identified so much as each accident itself. Thus, in this study, the thermal hydraulic behavior from DBA to the commencement of SA has been experimentally and analytically investigated for the long-term cooling phase of LB-LOCA(Large-Break Loss-of-Coolant Accident). Experiments were conducted for both cases of the loop seal open and closed in an integral test loop, named as SNUF (Seoul National University Facility), which was scaled down to l/6.4 in length and 1/178 in area of the APR1400 (Advanced Power Reactor 1400MWe). The core mixture level was a main measured value since it took major role in the fuel heat-up rate, the location of fuel melting initiation and the channel blockage by melting material during SA. Experimental results were compared to MAAP4.03 to assess its model of calculating the core mixture level. MAAP4.03 overestimates the core two- phase mixture level because sweep-out and spill-over and the measures to simulate the status of loop seal are not included, which is against the conservatism. Thus, it is recommended that MAAP4.03 should be improved to simulate the thermal hydraulic phenomena, such as sweep-out, spill-over and the status of loop seal.

  • A survey of insect-associated fungi in Korea revealed a novel fungal strain isolated from the bean bug Riptortus clavatus (Heteroptera: Alydidae). Culturally and morphologically, the fungal strain designated KNUF-20-INY03, shares features with members of the genus Acaulium. Phylogenetic analyses based on the concatenated nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS) regions and partial sequences of the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1-α), and β-tubulin (β-TUB), and large subunit of the nuclear ribosomal RNA (LSU) genes showed that the isolate is part of a clade that includes other Acaulium species, but it occupies a distinct phylogenetic position. Based on the shape, size, and color of its conidia and conidiogenous cells, strain KNUF-20-INY03 is readily distinguishable from the closely related A. acremonium, A. albonigrescens, A. caviariformis, A. pannemaniae, and A. retardatum. The conidial length-to-width ratio (1.6) of the novel isolate is significantly lower than that of A. acremonium (1.9), A. albonigrescens (2.4), and A. pannemaniae (2.4), and KNUF-20-INY03 produces hyaline conidia and elliptical conidiogenous cells while A. caviariformis forms brown conidia and A. retardatum produces flask-shaped conidiogenous cells. Thus, both phylogenetic and morphological analyses indicate that this strain is a novel species in the genus Acaulium, and we propose the name Acaulium microspora sp. nov.

  • In October 2021, soft rot disease seriously affected radish crop in Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. The infected radishes were stunted and turned dark green, with yellowish leaf foliage. A slimy, wet, and decayed pith region was observed in the infected roots. The bacterial strain KNUB-03-21 was isolated from infected roots. The biochemical and morphological characteristics of the isolate were similar to those of Pectobacterium brasiliense. Phylogenetic analysis based on the sequences of the 16S rRNA region and the concatenated DNA polymerase III subunit tau (dnaX), leucine-tRNA ligase (leuS), and recombinase subunit A (recA) genes confirmed that the isolate is a novel strain of P. brasiliense. Artificial inoculation of radish with P. brasiliense KNUB-03-21 resulted in soft rot symptoms similar to those observed in infected radish in the field; subsequently, P. brasiliense KNUB-03-21 was reisolated and reidentified. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. brasiliense as a causal pathogen of radish soft rot in Korea.

  • Our previous study identified a resistance locus to Phytophthora sojae (isolate 2457) in an interval of 3.8-4.7 Mbp on chromosome 3 via genetic mapping using a 'Daepung'×'Daewon' recombinant inbred population. Since differential gene expression between Daepung (susceptible) and Daewon (resistant) after inoculation of P. sojae is unknown, RNA sequencing was carried out to compare transcriptomic changes between the two genotypes following inoculation with P. sojae isolate 2457. The two varieties were inoculated using hypocotyl inoculation at the VC stage and stem tissue of 1 cm above and below of the inoculated site were sampled at 0, 6, 12 hours after inoculation (hai), respectively. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) under same cultivar in different time point and Daepung vs. Daewon in same time point were investigated. In comparison of Daepung vs. Daewon at 12 hai, a total of 3,513 DEGs were identified, including two nucleotide-binding site-leucine rich repeat (NBS-LRR) genes (Glyma.03g034800 and Glyma.03g034900) that are located in the previously reported resistance locus on chromosome 3. In addition, 14,966 DEGs were detected between 0 vs. 6 hai, containing one of candidate genes (Glyma.03g035300). This gene was upregulated by up to 4-fold in Daewon and Daepung. Additional results will be further discussed in the presentation. This study will provide valuable information for soybean crop improvement.

  • Objective: This study was to examine in vitro neural cell differentiation pattern of the genetically modified human embryonic stem cells expressing tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). Materials and Methods: Human embryonic stem (hES, MB03) cell was transfected with cDNAs cording for TH. Successful transfection was confirmed by western immunoblotting. Newly transfected cell line (TH#2/MB03) was induced to differentiate by two neurogenic factors retinoic acid (RA) and b-FGF. Exp. I) Upon differentiation using RA, embryoid bodies (EB, for 4 days) derived from TH#2/MB03 cells were exposed to RA ($10^{-6}M$)/AA ($5{\times}10^{-2}mM$) for 4 days, and were allowed to differentiate in N2 medium for 7, 14 or 21 days. Exp. II) When b-FGF was used, neuronal precursor cells were expanded at the presence of b-FGF (10 ng/ml) for 6 days followed by a final differentiation in N2 medium for 7, 14 or 21 days. Neuron differentiation was examined by indirect immunocytochemistry using neuron markers (NF160 & NF200). Results: After 7 days in N2 medium, approximately 80% and 20% of the RA or b-FGF induced Th#2/MB03 cells were immunoreactive to anti-NF160 and anti-NF200 antibodies, respectively. As differentiation continued, NF200 in RA treated cells significantly increased to 73.0% on 14 days compared to that in b-FGF treated cells (53.0%, p<0.05), while the proportion of cells expressing NF160 was similarly decreased between two groups. However, throughout the differentiation, expression of TH was maintained ($\sim$90%). HPLC analyses indicated the increased levels of L-DOPA in RA treated genetically modified hES cells with longer differentiation time. Conclusion: These results suggested that a genetically modified hES cells (TH#2/MB03) could be efficiently differentiated in vitro into mature neurons by RA induction method.
