The MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] assay is commonly used for analyzing the cell viability. In this study, effects of various solvents, different lights, and zinc protoporphyrin (ZnPP) on the chemical behavior of MTT formazan were investigated. The color response of MTT formazan in NaOH was highly pronounced; the absorbance of MTT formazan in 0.1 N NaOH at 550 nm was >2-fold higher than that in water, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), methanol, and ethanol. MTT formazan in DMSO and NaOH (>0.1 N) was relatively stable under fluorescent and UV light at 365 nm; its rapid degradation was induced under UV light at 254 nm in all solvents. ZnPP degraded MTT formazan under light in a time- and concentration-dependent manner; MTT formazan in 0.1 N NaOH was the most sensitive to ZnPP, followed by DMSO. These results suggest that NaOH and DMSO might be suitable media for MTT formazan for monitoring photosensitizing properties.
Fibrous $Na_xTi_nO_{2n+1}$ whisker was prepared by $H^+/Na^+$ ion-exchange on layered hydrous titanium dioxide ($H_2Ti_4O_9{\cdot}nH_2O$). The ion-exchange reaction was proceeded at 0.5~2.0 M NaOH solution. In the ion-exchange at 2.0 M NaOH solution, 73% of sodium was exchanged and the prepared $Na_xTi_nO_{2n+1}$ whisker was a fibrous crystal of about $10{\sim}20{\mu}m$ of length and about $0.7{\mu}m$ of diameter. The phase transition of the ion-exchange phases identified by the thermal analysis. The result showed that the $Na_xTi_nO_{2n+1}$ whisker was decomposed into $Na_2Ti_6O_{13}$ and $TiO_2$ in the temperature of $200{\sim}600^{\circ}C$.
Numerous chemicals were tasted to show antiviral activity in vitro against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). With a brief exposure of TMV to 1 N HCl or 1-0.1 N NaOH, Virions and their encapsidated RNAs were degraded completely and rapidly. When TMV was exposed to 0.1 N HCl, the hydrolysis of viral capsid in 5 min after treatment was observed in the 1% agarose gel. Virions and their encapsidated RNAs were not degraded by 0.01N HCl of 0.01N NaOH. These characteristics indicate that a short exposure to optimal concentration of acid or base is of practical value in eliminating infectious virus. The treatment of 50% isopropanol or UV light did not damage in viral integrity or their encapsidated RNAs. Disinfection of the agricultural tools and laboratory equipments using appropriate disinfectants is necessary to prevent cross contamination if farm and laboratory.
Hadong-Kaolin was treated with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The crystalline structure was studied by X-ray powder diffraction method. The optimum conditions for various crystal formation were as follows: Crystal Concentration Temp. reating time Halloysite 1~4 N NaOH $60^{\circ}C$ 0.5${\sim}$4 hr Sodium A zeolite 0.5${\sim}$2 N NaOH 80${\sim}$$100^{\circ}C$ 6${\sim}$20 hr Hydoxysodalite > 4 N NaOH 80${\sim}$$100^{\circ}C$ > 4 hr The ratio of $Na_2O to SiO_2$ for crystallizing sodium A zeolite was 0.5-1.5. The $Ca^{++}$ ion exchange capacity of produced sodium A zeolite for 0.2 N $CaCl_2$ solution at $25^{\circ}C$ was amounted to 65% of theoretical value.
Korean bentonite was treated with aqueous NaOH solution under the reaction conditions such as concentration of NaOH, 0.5-6N; ratio of $Na_{2}O$ to $SiO_2$, 1-4; reaction time, 2-30 days; reaction temperature, $70^{\circ}C-90^{\circ}C$. The products were examined by X-ray diffraction patterns. When it was treated with 2N NaOH at $70^{\circ}C$, zeolite species $P_1$ was formed with good yield. In higher concentration and at higher temperature than above, zeolite species $P_1$ was converted to hyeroxysodalite. Together with these crystals, some faujasite type zeolite, sodium A zeolite, mordenite type zeolite etc. was formed depending upon reaction conditions.

The residue after hot water extraction of blue crab, Portunus trituberculata, was hydrolyzed for utilizing the byproducts as seasonings. The acid(5N HCl) hydrolyzates were then neutralized with $Na_2CO_3$, 5N NaOH or 5N NaOH hydrolyzate, while the alkali hydrolyzates (5N NaOH) were also neutralized with 5N HCl or 5N HCl hydrolyzate. The total nitrogen and formol nitrogen contents increased, and the platability of the hydrolyzates was also enhanced by neutralization. The released amino acid contents from the neutralized hydrolyzates with $Na_2CO_3$, 5N NaOH and 5N NaOH hydrolyzate were $2,274mg\%,\;2,105.0mg\%$ and $2,683.5mg\%$, respectively. Amino acid contents from the neutralized hydrolyzates with 5N HCl and 5N HCl hydrolyzate were $1,352.5mg\%$ and $2,498.8mg\%$, respectively. In the decolorization of hydrolyzates using decolorization agent, powdered active carbon showed good decolorizing effect. Powdered active carbon decreased total nitrogen and formol nitrogen contents in direct relationship to the increase in its concentration. The effective concentration of active carbon used as decolorization agent showed as $1\~2\%$ of the crab hydrolyzate. Salt contents could be decreased at 37 brix by desalination method such as the evaporation of the hydrolyzate contents.

The $CaTio_3$powder with perovskite structure was synthesized by mixing anatase $TiO_2$and $Ca(OH)_2$powders as starting materials, and KOH or NaOH as mineralizer, followed by hydrothermal method. The change of crystal structure, particle shape and size of the synthesized $CaTiO_3$powder was investigated with kind and concentration of mineralizer. It was found that the spherical particles of 0.7 $\mu$m were obtained when using 1N KOH and the hexahedrons particles of 3$\mu$m were obtained for the case of using 10 N KOH. With increasing KOH concentration, the particle shape was changed from sphere to hexahedrons and its size also increased. When using 1 N NaOH, the powder was consisted of 0.5~1 $\mu$m particle in size, whereas hexahedrons of 1~4 $\mu$m and whiskers more than 10$\mu$m in size was obtained for the 10 N NaOH solution. With increasing NaOH concentration, the particle shape was varied from hexahedrons to whiskers, showing the similar result with the KOH case. It was confirmed from EDS analysis that Na element, which was detected in hexahedrones was not contained in the whiskers.
The optimal operation conditions of electrofloatation for oil-water separation of soil flushing effluent including electrolyte and pH were investigated. The reactor (200 ${\times}$ 10 ${\times}$ 15 cm) for the experiment was constructed by using acrylic plate. Diesel concentration was 1,000 mg/L in the 1 % mixed surfactant solution ($POE_5$: $POE_{14}$ 1: 1). Titanium coated electrode was used as cathode and stainless steel electrode as anode. Reaction time was 62 minutes (reaction time: 60 min., flotation time: 2 min.) and voltage was 6 V. The separation efficiency of electrofloatation was improved to 40% by electrolyte addition. Furthermore, NaCl (1N) added as electrolyte was showed enhanced efficiency compared to NaOH (1N). While, the effect of both NaCl and NaOH was sequentially increased in the range of 0.2∼1.0% (0.02∼0.1 M). The equilibrium time was found as 20 min. in the range of 0.4∼1.0% (0.04∼0.1M) for both of them.
Vinyl acetate usually used in PVA resin preparation was converted to PVAc by bulk polymerization using AIBN as a initiator and PVA was synthesized by changing the concentration of NaOH added for saponification subsequently. As a result of estimating molecular weight using GPC, molecular weight increased as the NaOH concentration increased to 2.5 N, 5.0 N, 7.5 N and 10.0 N and polydispersity had similar values of 2.1~2.3, however, showed slightly decreasing tendency. In addition, PVA saponificated by 10.0 N-NaOH showed high syndiotacticity in observation of tacticity using NMR spectroscopy. From this fact, the degree of tacticity was predicted to be high and it was in good agreement with the tendency of polydispersity by GPC. Also, from the result of FT-IR spectroscopy, it might be known that hydrolysis was more promoted in the PVA with 10.0 N-NaOH than other NaOH concentration. Intrinsic viscosity measured using Ubbelohde viscometer, which increased as the concentration of NaOH added for saponification increased. The change of shear strength with the change of shear rate was investigated using Brookfield viscometer, in consequence, viscosity of PVA synthesized decreased as shear rate increased. PVA solution confirmed to show the shear thining behavior by Casson plot and PVA with 10.0 N-NaOH had the largest yield value. DSC measurement was performed to know the thermal properties of PVA. Tp had nearly constant value of 214$^{\circ}C$ in all cases except for adding 2.5 N-NaOH and $\Delta$H was increased as the concentration of NaOH increased. From this properties, it was concluded that the degree of hydrogen bonding was proportional to the added concentration of NaOH and the increase of the degree of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction could affect the rheological and thermal properties of title compound.
