  • In identifying bodies that are severely decayed or damaged, methods using fingerprints and various biochemical tests are known to have its limits. To overcome this, forensic odontological method which is based on the analysis of the cranium, tooth and dental restoration is used to enhance the accuracey of individual identification. For this reason, I have come to analysis of the dental materials that exists between the teeth that is perceived to have been previously restored and the one adjacent to it. By analyzing the constituents of gold crown-restored, non-precious metal-restored, gold inlay-restored and amalgam -restored teeth, and adjacent teeth using EDX(energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis) which was invented to analyze very small amount of elements, the nature of the restoration could be predicted and the results obtained were as follows. 1. Some of constitute of gold alloy was extracted from residual cement of gold crown restoration, but that was not extracted from the restored tooth and the one adjacent to it. 2. Some of constituents of non-precious metal alloy was extracted both in the residual cement on the tooth with no-precious metal restoration and in the tooth with the restoration itself. However, none of its constituents were found in the tooth adjacent to it. 3. Some of constituents of gold alloy were found in the residual cement of gold inlay, but they were not found in the restored tooth and the adjacent tooth. 4. Some of constituents of amalgam alloy were found both in tooth restored with amalgam and in the adjacent tooth. From the results obtained above, it is possible to utilize the data obtained from analyizing residual dental materials in a more effective way. This data compensates for the lost data due to any harm done to the restorations prior to individual identification and further enhances the accuracy. Therefore, it could be concluded that this process of analyzing residual dental materials could be beneficial to individual identification in the area of forensic odontoldogy.

  • The tubes in a heat exchanger, such as a steam generator (SG), are subjected to crossflow, and interaction between tubes and supports can happen, which can cause fretting wear of tubes. Although many experiments and models have been established, some detailed mechanisms are still not sufficiently clear. In this work, more attention is paid to obtain the regulation of impact and sliding in the complex process and many factors, such as excitation forces and clearances. The responses and contact forces were analyzed to obtain clear understanding of the influences of these factors. Room temperature tests in the air were established. The results show that the effect of clearance on the normal work rate is not monotonous and instead has two peaks. The force ratio can influence the normal work rate by changing the distribution of contact angles, which can result in higher sliding in the contact process. Fretting wear tests are conducted, and the wear surfaces are analyzed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX). The results of this work can serve as a reference for impactsliding contact analysis between AVBs and tubes in steam generators.

  • To investigate the physio-chemical components and properties of aerosol particles in urban area sampling of aerosol particles was carried out in the campus of Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, during snowfall. Aerosol particles were collected on millipore filter papers using a low volume air sampler. Their shapes, sizes and chemical components were analyzed by a SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and an EDX(Energy Dispersive X-ray). As a results, ice crystals of dendrite and column types were predominantly shown at mature and developing stage of snowfall intensity. The denerite and sector plate types of ice crystals were mainly originated from the sea but column types were come from soil. Scavenging effect by snowfall was greatly also shown at dendrite type ice crystals that embryo was fully developd. Al, Si elements were shown at high frequencies as compared with others. Na, Cl components were especially shown at high frequencies under the sea-breeze wind during snowfall. Anthropogenic aerosol particles had shown with irregular shapes and sizes, relatively. Mainly 3-7$\mu$m aerosol particles were abundant and coarse particles also could be seen during snowfall. Ca, Zn, Fe components mainly caused by spike tires from vehicles in winter season were dominant before snowfall, however the element S mainly caused by human activity was rich after snowfall. The pH values of snow in Sapporo city were higher than those at coastal area. The concentration of chemical components in aerosol particles was also affected by surface winds. Aerosol particles in urban area, Sapporo were mainly affected by human activities like vehicles and combustion with wind system. And their types were related with snowfall intensity.

  • In this study, we examined the effect of cathode from electrolysis reactor for treating ballast water. We are going to select a suitable cathode for seawater electrolysis after considering the effect on the generation of the oxidant of cathode and the electrode deposition materials adhering to the surface of cathode. Anode is Ru-Ti-Pd electrode and cathode are Ti, Pt, JP520 (Ni-Pt-Ce) electrodes. Using the cathode of the three types, experiments were conducted to examine the effects of TRO (total residual oxidants) generation concentration and RNO (N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline, indicator of the generation of OH radical) degradation concentration (in 1, 35 psu), ohmic drop, FESEM(field emission scanning electron microscope) observation of cathode surface and EDX (energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) measurements of attached fouling material. The results showed that TRO generation concentration and RNO degradation concentration in according to each type of cathode are not different. The attached fouling materials were observed on the surface of Ti and the JP520 electrode by the observation of SEM after electrolysis for two hours, but it was not observed on the surface of Pt electrode. When considering the surface ohmic drop of cathode and the attached fouling materials, Pt electrode was judged as the excellent cathode.

  • Our study focuses on upgrading real biogas obtained under Indian scenario using carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology to remove carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and utilize it by forming metal carbonate. Amines such as monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA), and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were used to rapidly convert gaseous $CO_2$ to aqueous $CO_2$, and $BaCl_2$ was used as an additive to react with the aqueous $CO_2$ and rapidly precipitating the aqueous $CO_2$. All experiments were conducted at $25^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. We analyzed the characteristics of the $BaCO_3$ precipitates using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy - Energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses. The precipitates exhibited witherite morphology confirmed by the XRD results, and FT-IR confirmed that the metal salt formed was $BaCO_3$, and EDS showed that there were no traces of impurities present in it. The quantity of the $BaCO_3$ was larger when formed with DEA. Also, a comparison was done with a previous study of ours conducted in Korean conditions. Finally, we observed that the carbonate obtained using real biogas showed similar properties to carbonates available in the market. An economic analysis was done to show the cost effectiveness of the method employed by us.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to compare recycled and unused orthodontic miniscrews to determine the feasibility of reuse. The comparisons included both miniscrews with machined surfaces (MS), and those with etched surfaces (ES). Methods: Retrieved MS and ES were further divided into three subgroups according to the assigned recycling procedure: group A, air-water spray; group B, mechanical cleaning; and group C, mechanical and chemical cleaning. Unused screws were used as controls. Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, insertion time and maximum insertion torque measurements in artificial bone, and biological responses in the form of periotest values (PTV), bone-implant contact ratio (BIC), and bone volume ratio (BV) were assessed. Results: Morphological changes after recycling mainly occurred at the screw tip, and the cortical bone penetration success rate of recycled screws was lower than that of unused screws. Retrieved ES needed more thorough cleaning than retrieved MS to produce a surface composition similar to that of unused screws. There were no significant differences in PTV or BIC between recycled and unused screws, while the BV of the former was significantly lower than that of the latter (p < 0.05). Conclusions: These results indicate that reuse of recycled orthodontic miniscrews may not be feasible from the biomechanical aspect.

  • The friction behavior of a 60-${\mu}m$-thick anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) film having cylindrical nanopores of 45-nm diameter was investigated as a function of impregnated oil viscosity ranging from 3.4 to 392.6 cSt. Reciprocating ball-on-flat sliding friction tests using a 1-mm-diameter steel ball as the counterpart were carried out with normal load ranging from 0.1 to 1 N in an ambient environment. The friction coefficient significantly decreased with an increase in the oil viscosity. The boundary lubrication film remained effectively under all test conditions when high-viscosity oil was impregnated, whereas it was easily destroyed when low-viscosity oil was impregnated. Thin plastic deformed layer patches were formed on the worn surface with high-viscosity oil without evidence of tribochemical reaction and transfer of counterpart material.

  • The ultrastructural characteristics of epidermis isolated from healthy and rusty ginseng roots(Panax ginseng) were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the distribution profiles of inorganic elements were also examined by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The epidermis of rusty ginseng was thick and cell walls were also severely disrupted whereas the epidermal image of healthy ginseng showed relatively thin, clear and rectangular structure. A high amount of rod-shaped bacteria was found in rusty ginseng and cells near bacteria were degraded. The bacterial density in epidermis of rusty ginseng was ranged from 2.9$\times$10$^{6}$ to 3.5 $\times$ 10$^{7}$ CFU/g fresh weight, while that of healthy ones was from 4.7$\times$10$^2$ to 1.2$\times$10$^3$CFU/g. Artificial inoculation of bacteria isolated from rusty ginseng induced similar symptom like rusty ginseng. The mineral contents inculding Al, Si and Fe were Higher in the epidermis of rusty ginseng, but K content was lower compared to healthy ones.

  • Byobusan area of Aomori prefecture in Japan was a marshy sand dune and had developed for agricultural land use with a large-scale sprinkler system. Recently, it becomes an agricultural problem at this area that distinctive damage with browning maculation and fissures frequently occurs in Chinese yam tubers. Acetaldehyde is one of the factor candidates of underground part damage in plants. In this study, incidence rate of the tuber damage, and the morphological character and elemental composition of the damage parts in tubers were investigated with applications of excessive irrigation water or acetaldehyde water solution into the yam field. The incidence rate of the distinctive tuber damage increased as the input amount of irrigation water was increased. At the browning maculation parts of the tubers, many fissures and damages of cork layer were observed under scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the periderm of tubers was significantly thicker in damaged parts than in non-damaged parts. Funguses, bacterium and nematodes were not observed in the damaged part under scanning electron microscopy. The weight ratio of each constituent element in an analyzed area relative to the total weight of major essential elements was measured with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The results showed that the weight ratios of boron, carbon, phosphorus, sulfur and calcium were higher in damaged parts than in non-damaged parts whereas the weight ratios of oxygen and chlorine were lower in damaged parts than in non-damaged parts. It was also shown by this spectrometry that iron, cadmium, lead and zinc were not directly involved in occurrence of the tuber damage. In this study, there was no remarkable difference of tuber appearance between non-acetaldehyde and acetaldehyde application treatments. From the above results, it is shown that the damage would be a physiological disorder induced by the input of a large quantity of water in the sandy field.
