  • We propose a haptic interface algorithm for joystick operators working in remote control systems of unmanned vehicles. The haptic interface algorithm is implemented using a force-feedback joystick, which is equipped with low price DC motors without encoders. Generating specific amounts of forces on the joystick pole according to the distance between a remote controlled vehicle and obstacles, the haptic interface enables the operator to perceive the distance information by the sense of touch. For the case of no joystick operation or no obstacles in the working area, we propose an origin control algorithm, which positions the joystick pole at the origin. The origin control algorithm prevents the false movement of the remote vehicles and provides the operator with a realistic force resisting the joystick pole's movement. The experiment results obtained under various scenarios exemplify the validity of the proposed haptic interface algorithm and the origin control algorithm.

  • This paper presents force feedback control performance of a 3DOF haptic device that can be used for minimally invasive surgery (MIS). As a first step, a 3DOF electrorheological (ER) joint is designed using a spherical mechanism. And it is optimized based on the mathematical torque modeling. Subsequently, the master haptic device is manufactured by the spherical joint. In order to achieve desired force trajectories, model based compensation strategy is adopted for the ER master. Therefore, Preisach model fur the PMA-based ER fluid is identified using experimental first order descending (FOD) curves. A compensation strategy is then formulated through the model inversion to achieve desired force at the ER master. Tracking control performances for sinusoidal force trajectory are presented, and their tracking errors are evaluated.

  • In typical master/slave teleoperation systems, a human operator generally manipulates the master to control the slave through the visual information like camera image. However, the operator may get into trouble due to the limited visual information depending on the camera positions and the delay on the visual information because of low communication bandwidth. To cope with this inherit problem in the camera-based teleoperation system, this paper presents a teleoperation system using a reconstructed graphic model instead of the camera image. The proposed teleoperation system consists of a robot control module, a master module using a force-reflective joystick, and a graphic user interface (GUI) module. The graphic user interface module provides the operator with a 3D model reconstructed using a small set of sensing data received from the remote site. The proposed teleoperation system is evaluated through a peg-in-hole assembly task.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore a safe, advanced, and environment-friendly demolition equipments and their operation methods. As an initial achievement, the capacity of the existing equipments have been evaluated through technical discussions and demonstrations with some experts in the related industry. From these evaluations, it was concluded that a haptic based remote control with force feed-back mechanism and sensor fusion functions would be the most appropriate to the demolition equipments. Therefore, a novel haptic device that is adequately designed for the demolition equipments is proposed in this paper. Top-down demolition method is also proposed, which is very effective in the demolition of high-rise buildings.

  • SBS's -also known as - is one of the most famous investigative programs in South Korean television sector. This program is well-known for its much detailed and tenacious investigation of unsolved crimes, various social wrong-doings, as well as public scandals through a mystery code and meticulous storytelling. As a result, generates much popular interests and responses from local audiences. This work both examines and contextualizes the multiple roles and implications of this program through a textual and production analysis. Especially, it critically pursues this program's achievements and limits in the context of the changing roles of investigative journalism and its unstable status at current juncture.

  • This paper describes development of Polarized Stereo Monitoring System (KAERI-PSM) and compares the remote handling performance of KAERI-PSM with that of other monitoring systems, electric shutter type stereo monitoring system and general TV monitoring system. Remote handling performance is evaluated by total time and error number on remote operating experiments. Four kinds of remote handling experiments are carried out through 1) directly 2) general TV 3) electric shutter type monitor, and 4) KAERI-PSM. In these experiments six employees are participated and PUMA robot with force-torque reflectional joystic is used. The result of experiments show that camera angle against object is significant factor in monitoring and stereo monitoring system give more performance benifits in terms of accuracy and speed of remote handling operation than general TV monitoring system. In comparision of the polarized and electric shutter type stereo monitoring system, both have similar accuracy and speed for remote handling operation, but the former is superior in image quality and stability of the performance.

  • In this paper, a 2 DOF haptic yawing joystick for use as the navigation input device in virtual environments is introduced. The haptic yawing joystick has 360° range for yawing motion and ±100° for pitching motion. The device can support weights of up to 26N for χ axis and 10N for axis with 10kHz of sampling rate. The size of the haptic yawing joystick is so small that it can be assembled on armrest of an arm chair and has relatively larger work space than other conventional 2 DOF joysticks. For the haptic yawing joystick, an ellipse navigation algorithm using the user's velocity in the virtual navigation is proposed. The ellipse represents the velocity of the user. According to the velocity of the navigator, the ellipse size is supposed to be changed. Since the path width of navigation environments is limited, the ellipse size is also limited. The ellipse navigation algorithm is tested in 2 dimensional virtual environments. The test results show that the average velocity of the navigation with the algorithm is faster than the average navigation velocity without the algorithm.

  • LAS (Laparoscopy Assisted Surgery) has been substituted alternatively for traditional open surgery. However, when using a commercialized robot assisted laparoscopic such as Da Vinci, surgeons have encountered some problems due to having to depend only on information by visual feedback. To solve this problem, a haptic function is required. In order to realize the haptic teleoperation system, a force feedback and bilateral control system are needed. Previous research showed that the perturbation value estimated by a SPO (Sliding Perturbation Observer) followed a reaction force that loaded on the surgical robot instrument. Thus, in this paper, the force feedback problem of surgical robots is solved through the reaction force estimation method. This paper then introduces the possibility of the haptic function realization of a laparoscopic surgery robot using a bilateral control system. For bilateral control, the master uses an impedance control and the slave uses a SMC (Sliding Mode Control). The experiment results show that a torque and force sensorless teleoperation system can be implemented using a bilateral control structure.

  • For dismantling heavy structure under special environment in radioactivity, there are many problems which should be tele-operated and feedback a cutting force for cutting a thick structure such as concrete. When operator dismantles a thick heavy concrete structure, it is in sufficient to judge whether robot is contacting or not with environment by using only vision information. To overcome this problem, force feedback and impedance model based bilateral control are introduced. The sliding mode control with sliding perturbation observer (SMCSPO) based bilateral control is applied and surveyed to a single rod hydraulic cylinder in this paper. The sliding mode control is used for robustness against a disturbance. The sliding perturbation observer is used for estimation of a reaction force such as cutting force. The bilateral control is executed using the information of reaction force estimated by SMCSPO. The contribution of this paper is that the estimation method and bilateral control of the single rod hydraulic cylinder are introduced and discussed by experiment.
