This study intended to investigate the effects of slaked lime and ethanol on poultry red mites (PRM) in the coops of laying hen. Three experiments were conducted to this effect. The first used untreated hydrated lime as a control and 10% and 20% aqueous solutions of hydrated lime were used as treatments. The second experiment used 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100% ethanol solutions as treatments. The third experiment used hydrated lime in two distinct concentrations (10% and 20%) and 30%, 40%, and 50% ethanol solutions mixed to yield a total of 6 (2 × 3) treatments. All treatments were tested three times each. In the first experiment, the PRM killing rates were 74.0% and 92.3% when treated with 10% and 20% hydrated lime solutions, respectively. The acaricidal activity of the control sample was 0%. In the second experiment, the lowest value was 1.67% for the 30% ethanol solution, 8.33% for the 40% solution, and 7.47% for the 50% solution. The acaricidal activities of the 60% and 70% solutions were 42.4% and 84.7%, respectively. A 100% acaricidal activity was observed in dilutions above 80% (P<0.05). In the third experiment, the PRM killing effect of the hydrated lime + ethanol mixture was 100% in all treatments. In conclusion, after taking into consideration the economical and safety factors, a mixture of 10% hydrated lime solution and 30% ethanol is considered to be a suitable candidate for controlling PRM.
Salmonella spp. and Brucella spp. are associated with considerable diseases of both humans and animals. In addition, these microorganisms cause the economic loss in animal farming and food industry. In this study, the disinfection efficacy of a commercial disinfectant, composed to povidone-iodine was evaluated against S. typhimurium and B. ovis. A bactericidal efficacy test by broth dilution method was used to determine the lowest effective dilution of the disinfectant following exposure to test bacteria for 30 min at $4^{\circ}C$. The disinfectant and test bacteria were diluted with hard water (HW) or organic matter suspension (OM) according to treatment condition. On HW condition, the bactericidal activity of the disinfectant against S. typhimurium and B. ovis was 400 and 150 fold dilutions, respectively. On OM condition, the bactericidal activity of the disinfectant was 5 and 20 fold dilutions against S. typhimurium and B. ovis, respectively. As the disinfectant composed to povidine-iodine possesses bactericidal efficacy against animal pathogenic bacteria such as S. typhimurium and B. ovis, the disinfectant solution can be used to control the spread of bacterial diseases.
Experiments were performed to find out the physico-chemical properties of milt and sperm motility in various storage conditions using starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus). The average sperm concentration and spermatocrit in stripped milt were $6.00{\pm}0.98{\times}10^8/mL\;and\;72{\pm}5$, respectively. The osmolality and pH were $337{\pm}9mmol/kg$ and $7.7{\pm}0.1$, respectively. The sperm of starry flounder was preserved with artificial seminal plasma (ASP), Stein's solution (SS) and marine fish Ringer's solution (MFRS) at $0^{\circ}C,\;2^{\circ}C,\;and\;4^{\circ}C$. The most effective condition for cold storage was SS at $0^{\circ}C$, and the preserved sperm remained motile for 30 days.
Purpose: We studied to know the effect of early feeding on the course and the recovery of acute diarrheal disease. Methods: The study was conducted on 76 patients who admitted to the Soonchunhyang university hospital for acute diarrhea. We divided 76 patients into 3 dietary groups (whole milk group (WMG): 35, diluted milk group (DMG): 29, breast milk group (BMG): 12). We compared three groups by numbers of diarrhea, numbers of vomiting, calory intake, weight increments, and duration of diarrhea. Results: 1) The mean age was $16.45{\pm}18.20$, $11.53{\pm}9.80$, $5.38{\pm}5.01$ months for WMG, DMG, and BMG, respectively. The mean weight was 9 kg and the mean duration of diarrhea was 2.29 days. 2) The numbers of diarrhea during admission was not significantly different in the three groups. 3) The calory intake during admission was significantly low in DMG. 4) The weight increments during admission was significantly low in DMG. 5) The duration of diarrhea during admission was not significantly different in the three gourps. Conclusion: Early refeeding with whole milk or breast milk did not prolong or worsen the course or symptoms of diarrhea compared with gradual reintroduction with diluted milk. But there were advantages of improved nutrition and weight increments. Futher study is necessary to demonstrate the effect of diet according to the causative organisms.
The use of activating treatment agent (formerly acid treatment agent) has been an effective strategy to remove deleterious epibiont organisms such as diatoms and green seaweeds, and it has greatly contributed to increase in Porphyra production. Although many manufacturers supply many kinds of activating treatment agent with different components in these days, no report about their effects on Porphyra culture was found. In this paper, effects of a commercial activating treatment agent were evaluated for practical use in Porphyra culture. No difference was found in dead cell ratios(%) of Porphyra yezoensis thalli between treated and control groups. However, dead cell ratios of Monostroma nitidum thalli were increased from 0~4.6% to 99.0~100% after the treatment. Bathing Porphyra thalli in activating treatment agent resulted in a great decrease in epiphytic bacterial number attached to the thalli from $10^2{\sim}10^{11}$ cells/g to $0{\sim}10^5$ cells/g but did not change the colour of the thalli. These results suggest that bathing Porphyra thalli in activating treatment agent could be a promising strategy to remove green algae, diatoms and bacteria.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the cleansing performance of a distilled water, a diluted solution of sodium hypochlorite as a household bleaching cleanser and three alkaline peroxide cleansers in vivo plaque deposits by using scanning electron microscope. Materials and methods: Five individuals were selected from department of the prosthodontics in Pusan National University Hospital, and each of them was inserted with specimens for plaque accumulation in their temporary dentures for 48 hours. The specimens were removed and cleaned by each cleansing agents for 8 hours. Scanning electron micrographs were made from the specimens at a magnification of ${\times}2,000$. A panel of ten persons with a dental or paradental background, but not directly involved in the study, was selected to analyze the photomicrographs to determine which denture cleanser was more effective in removing plaque. Results: Diluted solution of sodium hypochlorite was the most effective at removing plaque following $Polident^{(R)}$, $Cleadent^{(R)}e$, $Bonyplus^{(R)}$ and distilled water in order. But there was no significant difference of cleansing efficacy between diluted solution of sodium hypochlorite and $Polident^{(R)}$, $Polident^{(R)}$ and $Cleadent^{(R)}e$, $Cleadent^{(R)}e$ and $Bonyplus^{(R)}$, respectively (P > .05). Alkaline peroxide cleansers by themselves cannot adequately remove accumulated plaque deposits, especially if the deposits are heavy. Corrosion could be seen on the surface of non-precious alloy specimens immersed in diluted solution of sodium hypochlorite. Conclusion: It is recommended to use of alkaline peroxide type cleansers with brushing whenever possible, since denture cleanliness is often poor due to the relative inefficiency of these cleansers.
