In this study, glassy carbon coating was performed on the graphite using a phenolic resin and a curing agent was mixed with ethylene glycol as an additive to form the uniform surface. The phenolic resin was dried and cured under the environments of hot air, then converted into a glassy carbon layer by pyrolysis at 500~1,500℃. FTIR, XRD, SEM analysis, and density/porosity/contact angle measurement were performed for characterization of glassy carbon. The pyrolysis temperature for high-quality glassy carbon was optimized to be about 1,000℃. As the content of the additive increased, the effect of reducing surface defects on the coated surface, reduction of porosity, increase of contact angle, and increase of density were investigated in this study. The method of forming a glassy carbon coating layer through an additive is expected to be applicable to graphite coating and other fields.

We report a case of a 55-year-old man who diagnosed with advanced gastric cancer (AGC), with A review of the literature. A 55-year old man was transferred to our hospital for further evaluation and treatment after being diagnosed with adenocarcinoma through endoscopic biopsy during a regular health examination. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed AGC, stage IIA (T3N3M0), while an endoscopic examination showed AGC, Borrmann type 2. The patient is currently under observation after undergoing radical subtotal gastrectomy with gastroduodenostomy and subsequent administration of oral chemotherapeutic agents. As an abdominal CT response assessment performed after surgery revealed new metastasis to the liver, the patient received palliative chemotherapy as progressive disease was suspected. After receiving chemotherapy in the order of FOLFOX (5-fluorouracil (5-FU)) + Leucovorin + Oxaliplatin), FOLFIRI (5-FU + Leucovorin + Irinotecan), EAP-II (Etoposide + Doxorubicin + Cisplatin), ELF (Etoposide + Leucovorin + 5-FU), TS-1 (Tegafur + Gimeracil) + Cisplatin, an abdominal CT response assessment showed progressive disease for which the regimen was altered to PFL (Paclitaxel + 5-FU + Leucovorin). The patient has currently completed his second cycle of chemotherapy and after an abdominal CT response assessment, further course of therapy will be decided.

De-icing/anti-icing fluid is essential for removing ice formation on aircraft. It chemically removes ice using organic solvents, which can cause damage to the topcoat surface in the process. In this study, glycol-based deicing/anti-icing fluid was used to remove ice, and the resulting damage to the topcoat was examined. USB microscope was used to observe the formation and growth of ice, while a confocal microscope was employed to observe the surface morphology after treatment with de-icing/anti-icing fluid. Additionally, coating thickness measurements and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis were conducted to investigate the physical and chemical changes on the surface. The repeated application of de-icing/anti-icing fluid showed a reduction in the ice formation rate and an increase in the growth rate. Damage during the pressurization process and surface damage to the polyurethane topcoat caused by ethylene glycol were observed during the de-icing process. Although no chemical changes were detected, the analysis revealed that surface uniformity decreased, with physical damage such as cracks and undulations forming on the surface. It was confirmed that while de-icing/anti-icing fluid is effective in removing ice, it also causes surface damage.
Carbonized rice hull, neutralized by dilute nitric acid, was evaluated possibility as a bed matrial for sanitary cultivation. The growth response of Chinese Cabbage, lettuce, and spinach on the carbonized rice hull supplemented with different kinds and concentrations of available nutrition solution was accessed. The ideal nitrogen concentration of nutrition solution was 126 mg/l. Both solutions of compound fertilizer and nutrition containing microelements showed no difference in growth and chemical components of vegetables. Therefore, compound fertilizer was thought to be better than nutrition owing to the convenience of handling in practice. The gravel was also evaluated as supporting material of carbonized rice hull. Because of lasting latent heat in gravel, the mixing treatment of carbonized rice hull and gravel(7~10cm in diam.) was efficient to the growth resulting in the highest dry weight per plant, but the heavy weight of gravel made the handling very difficult. Light carbonized rice hull showed the better plant growth and ease handling, compared to the mixture of soil and compost, and had enough supporting capacity. Therefore, carbonized rice hull was thought to be a desirable bed material for environmentally controlled cultivation.

This study was conducted to develop Helianthus tuberosus (HT) juice mixed with dried bitter melon juice and assess its hypoglycemic effect in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. HT juice mixed with 5.0% dried bitter melon juice was used in this study. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups (eight rats per group) and drunk each sample for 4 weeks: normal water [normal control (NC) group], STZ+normal water (STZ group), STZ+HT juice (HT group), STZ+HT juice mixed with 2.5% bitter melon juice (HT2.5 group), and STZ+HT juice mixed with 5.0% bitter melon juice (HT5.0 group). HT juice was diluted to 25% in distilled water and supplied to rats. Food intake, body weight gain, and food efficiency ratio were lower in the STZ group than in the NC group. HT, HT2.5, and HT5.0 groups showed higher parameters than the STZ groups. Water intakes were higher in the STZ group than in the NC group. After 3 weeks, HT, HT2.5, and HT5.0 groups showed lower parameters than the STZ group. After 1 week, blood glucose level of the STZ group ($476.7{\pm}22.8mg/dL$) was significantly higher than those of the HT group ($376.3{\pm}25.8mg/dL$), HT2.5 group ($405.2{\pm}35.1mg/dL$), and HT5.0 group ($342.8{\pm}29.7mg/dL$). After 4 weeks, blood glucose level of the STZ group were significantly higher than those of the HT, HT2.5, and HT5.0 group. Serum insulin levels of the HT group ($3.13{\pm}0.32ng/mL$), HT2.5 group ($3.40{\pm}0.23ng/mL$), and HT5.0 group ($3.48{\pm}0.43ng/mL$) were higher than that of the STZ group ($2.72{\pm}0.53ng/mL$). These results indicate that H. tuberosus juice mixed with dried bitter melon juice helps prevent or attenuate progression of diabetes in rats with STZ-induced diabetes.

The ultimate objective of this study is to develop oxygen-enriched combustion techniques applicable to the system of practical industrial boiler. To this end the combustion characteristics of lab-scale LNG combustor were investigated as a first step using the method of numerical simulation by analyzing the flame characteristics and pollutant emission behaviour as a function of oxygen enrichment level. Several useful conclusions could be drawn based on this study. First of all, the increase of oxygen enrichment level instead of air caused long and thin flame called laminar flame feature. This was in good agreement with experimental results appeared in open literature and explained by the effect of the decrease of turbulent mixing due to the decrease of absolute amount of oxidizer flow rate by the absence of the nitrogen species. Further, as expected, oxygen enrichment increased the flame temperatures to a significant level together with concentrations of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ species because of the elimination of the heat sink and dilution effects by the presence of $N_2$ inert gas. However, the increased flame temperature with $O_2$ enriched air showed the high possibility of the generation of thermal $NO_x$ if nitrogen species were present. In order to remedy the problem caused by the oxygen-enriched combustion, the appropriate amount of recirculation $CO_2$ gas was desirable to enhance the turbulent mixing and thereby flame stability and further optimum determination of operational conditions were necessary. For example, the adjustment of burner with swirl angle of $30\sim45^{\circ}$ increased the combustion efficiency of LNG fuel and simultaneously dropped the $NO_x$ formation.
To establish effective and safe control method against Phytophthora root rot caused by Phytophthora capsici on tomato in hydroponic culture, three pesticides, oxadixyl copper hydroxide 8% WP, metalaxyl copper oxychloride 15% WP, and dimethomorph. dithianon 38% WP at 4 concentration levels were tested on potato dextrose agar medium inoculated with Phytophthora capsici. All pesticides inhibited mycelial growth, but two pesticides of them, metalaxyl copper oxychloride WP and dimethomorph. dithianon WP, were selected as effective pesticides for the efficacy test in a hydroponic culture. Forty days after transplanting of tomato seedlings, 4 ml of sporangia of P. capsici (about 25 sporangi/ml) per plot was inoculated around tomato plant root, and then 5 days after inoculation, the pesticides diluted at 5,000 times were drenched 1, 2 or 3 times per plot on the culture cube at 15 days interval. Fifteen days after drenching, tomato fruits and hydroponic culture solution were sampled for the analysis of pesticide residues. Dimethomorph was detected 0.001 and 0.003 mg/kg in tomato of the plots sprayed 2 and 3 times with dimethomorph dithianon WP of which detection levels were far below compared with 1.0 mg/kg of the Korean MRL of dimethomorph on tomato. Incidences of Phytophthora root rot were $30.5{\sim}50%$ in the plots drenched at 1 or 2 times with metalaxyl.copper oxychloride WP, and $16.7{\sim}25%$ in the plots treated with dimethomorph dithianon WP. However, there was no incidence of Phytophthora root rot in the plots treated at 3 times with both of pesticides, showing no phytotoxic effect. Based on the results, the drenching of these pesticides on the culture cube could be recommended as a very safe and effective control method for Phytophthora root rot in tomato.

Pure CaO, Mn-doped CaO, Mn/CaO, and K/CaO catalysts were prepared and tested as catalysts for the oxidative coupling of methane in the temperature range of 600 to 800$^{\circ}C$ to investigate the effects of Mn- and K-addition on the catalytic activity of calcium oxide. To characterize the catalysts, X-ray powder diffraction(XRD), XPS, SEM, DSC, and TG analyses were performed. The catalytic reaction was carried out in a single-pass flow reactor using on-line gas chromatography system. Normalized reaction conditions were generally $p(CH_4)/p(O_2)=250$ Torr/50 Torr, total feed flow rate=30 mL/min, and 1 atm of total pressure with He being used as diluent gas. Among the catalysts tested, 6.3 mol% Mn-doped CaO catalyst showed the best $C_2$ yield of 8.0% with a selectivity of 43.2% at 775$^{\circ}C$. The $C_2$ selectivity increased on lightly doped CaO catalysts, while decreased on heavily doped CaO([Mn] > 6.3 mol%) catalysts. 6 wt.% Mn/CaO and 6 wt.% K/CaO catalysts showed the $C_2$ selectivities of 13.2% and 30.9%, respectively, for the reaction. Electrical conductivities of CaO and Mn-doped CaO were measured in the temperature range of 500 to 1000$^{\circ}C$ at Po2's of $10^{-3}\; to\;10^{-1}\;atm.$ The electrical conductivity was decreased with Mn-doping and increased with increasing $P0_2$in the range of $10^{-3}\;to\;10^{-1}\;atm,$ indicating the specimens to be p-type semiconductors. It was suggested that the interstitial oxygen ions formed near the surface can activate methane and the formation of interstitial oxygen ions was discussed on the basis of solid-state chemistry.
In this study, Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge(Danshen) powder was extracted with ethanol, and its antimicrobial activity was investigated. The ethanol extract of the Danshen had antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. The inhibition zones of the Danshen extract(3 mg/disc) against B. subtilis, E. coli and S. aureus were 13, 12 and 8.5 mm, respectively. To test the food preservation effect of Danshen and determine the optimal ratio of the Danshen extract in a formulation, Sulgidduk samples were prepared with substitutions of 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1% Danshen extract, and then their quality characteristics were investigated over 4 days of storage. According to the results, total cell counts showed a decreasing trend with an increasing amount of added Danshen extract. Moisture contents were not significantly different among the Sulgidduk samples. As the content of Danshen extract increased, the L-values of samples decreased and the a- and b- values increased. For the textural characteristics, the hardness, gumminess, and chewiness of the Sulgidduk samples decreased as the amount of Danshen extract increased; however, they increased with the progression of storage time. In the sensory evaluation, the control group had significantly higher scores for color, flavor and after-taste as compared to the Danshen extract-added groups. With increasing Danshen extract contents, flavor and overall acceptability decreased, while Danshen flavor, bitterness and off-flavor increased. Chewiness was not significantly different among the samples. In conclusion, the results indicate that substituting 0.5% Danshen extract in Sulgidduk is optimal for quality and provides a product with reasonably high overall acceptability.
