Seminal plasma(SP) is usually removed from semen that is to be cryopreserved. However, some reports indicate that SP has beneficial effects on spermatozoa during chilling and freezing. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of SP on sperm survival by adding SP to the extender before cooling and freezing canine spermatozoa. In replicate experiments, ejaculates obtained from four healthy dogs(1-4 years old) of various breeds were pooled, centrifuged at $300{\times}g$ for 10 min at $25^{\circ}C$, and the supernatant of seminal plasma was decanted. Spermatozoa were suspended in egg yolk-Tris(EYT) buffer. The study comprised two experiments: [Exp 1] Sperm were suspended in EYT extender containing either 0, 20, 40, 80 or 100% SP and were slowly cooled to $4^{\circ}C$ for 2h or held at $25^{\circ}C$ as controls. Sperm concentration was adjusted to $2{\times}10^8/ml$. [Exp II] Sperm samples, each of which contained $1{\times}10^8/ml$, were assigned to nine groups to be frozen. In the first four groups, sperm in EYT containing either 20, 40, 80 or 100% SP were cooled to $4^{\circ}C$, then diluted to contain final concentrations of EYT+0.6M glycerol and then were frozen. The final concentrations of SP were 10, 20, 40 or 50%. In the other four groups, sperm in EYT alone were first cooled slowly to $4^{\circ}C$, then diluted to contain final concentrations of EYT+0.6M glycerol plus 10, 20, 40 or 50% SP and then were frozen. Spermatozoa, which chilled in EYT alone and diluted to contain final concentrations of EYT+0.6M glycerol without seminal plasma, and then frozen, was regarded as control. Spermatozoa were frozen at $25^{\circ}C/min$ of cooling rate in plastic straws that were suspended above liquid nitrogen and thawed in water at $38^{\circ}C$ for 1 min. Sperm survival was assayed by determining progressive motility and integrity of plasma and acrosome membranes. Progressive motility was determined by microscopic examination at $200{\times}$ magnification. Membrane integrity was assessed by use of a double fluorescent dye, and acrosome integrity by staining sperm with Pisum sativum agglutinin. The results of the first experiment showed that adding SP did not improve motility of spermatozoa compared to those incubated without SP regardless of temperature. The results of the second experiment showed that spermatozoa suspended in EYT+0.6M glycerol containing SP exhibited the higher progressive motility before being frozen(P<0.05). However, frozen-thawed spermatozoa that had suspended in EYT+0.6M glycerol containing SP showed the similar or lower viability(P<0.05). In summary, although seminal plasma did not affect spermatozoa that were chilled in EYT without cryoprotectant(CPA), addition of seminal plasma to EYT containing CPA did significantly improved progressive motility of canine spermatozoa that were chilled.

Effect of effective microorganisms on the growth of plant (salvia sp.) was investigated. Microorganisms used were photosynthetic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and yeasts. When photosynthetic bacteria were inoculated to soil by 100 dilution, treated plants showed 160% growth by length compared to control. When photosynthetic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and yeasts were mixed, diluted by 10 and inoculated to soil, the plants showed 212% growth compared to control. Microbial populations were increased in the treated soil.

To investigate the effects of chitosan on growth and quality improvement of vegetables, we utilized cabbage as a model plant system and SL-chitosan as a chitosan fertilizer. The chitosan fertilizer treatment increased the leaf lengths of cabbage seedlings compared with those of control groups. In addition, the content of ${\gamma}-aminobutyric$ acid (GABA) in the fertilizer-treated cabbage seedlings was higher than that in the control group. Peripheral lengths and head weights of cabbages along with their GABA contents were also measured during the growth of cabbages in field. The fertilizer treatment, without changing the physico-chemical properties of main field soil after the cultivation of cabbage, significantly increased the peripheral length, average weight and GABA content compared with control treatment. These results may suggest that the quality and quantity of cabbage can be improved by chitosan treatments.
The insecticides salithion$(Salithion^{(R)},\;25\;EC)$, decamethrin$(Decis^{(R)}\;1\;EC)$, phenthoate$(Elsan^{(R)},\;47.5\;EC)$, diazinon$(Diaton^{(R)})$, chlorfevinphes$(Birlane^{(R)},\;24\;EC)$, phosalone$(Zolone^{(R)},\;25\;EC)$, and methamidophos$(Tamaron^{(R)},\;60\;SL)$ were evaluated on the effectiveness of single ULV foliar spray for the control of the pine fall midges(Therodiplosis japonensis UCHIDA et INOUYE) when the insecticides diluted with the 50 times of water were applied to the pine trees$(1.5\~2m\;in\;height)$ on June 6 by ULV Sprayer(Battery-type of 12 voltage, devised by Union Carbide). A single ULV foliar spray of salithion, decamethrin, and phethoate among the insecticides tested was significantly effective for the pressure of the gall incidence by the insects.

Pseudoperonospora cubensis (downy mildew) is highly virulent to various Cucurbitaceae crops, including cucumber (Cucumis sativus). We tested chlorine dioxide application in a plastic greenhouse for environment-friendly control of downy mildew disease. Spraying diluted chlorine dioxide suppressed downy mildew disease with 41.2% control efficacy. Thermal fogging with chlorine dioxide had a high control efficacy of 80.9%, confirming that this approach is useful for environment-friendly downy mildew control. Using thermal fogging to control diseases that are greatly affected by humidity, such as downy mildew, may be more effective compared with conventional dilution spray control methods.

Mycelial growth of Lentinula edodes on solid or liquid culture media supplemented with differentconcentrations of oak wood vinegar varied depending on the types of wood vinegar or mushroom varieties used.Oak wood vinegar obtained from traditionally carbonizing kiln (TWV) inhibited mycelial growth of L. edodes atthe dilution level of less than $5{\times}10^{-2}$, but stimulated at $10^{-3}$ to $2{\times}10^{-3}$. Wood vinegar from mechanicallycarbonizing kiln (MWV) inhibited at $10^{-3}$, but stimulated at $2{\times}10^{-3}$. In liquid culture media, both wood vinegarinhibited at $5{\times}10^{-2}$, but stimulated at $2{\times}10^{-3}$. Sanjo-302-ho grown in liquid culture media at $2{\times}10^{-3}$, and Sanrim 2and 3-ho grown at $4{\times}10^{-3}$ showed relatively high degree of wood decay (DWD) and growing ability within wood(GAWW) when these isolates were inoculated onto oak wood logs. TWV completely inhibited mycelial growth ofgreen mold fungi, Trichoderma species, tested at $5{\times}10^{-1}$ dilution level, while MWV inhibited at $5{\times}10^{-1}$ to $5{\times}10^{-2}$dilution level. For Diatrype stigma, TWV inhibited mycelial growth at the dilution level of less than $5{\times}10^{-2}$, whileMWV did 80% of mycelial growth at $10^{-2}$, and 100% at $5{\times}10^{-1}$ dilution level. Fresh and dry weight of fruitingbodies harvested after soaking of wood logs into wood vinegar solutions with different concentrations werecompared, and were the highest at $2.5{\times}10^{-2}$ dilution level. Storage test of fruiting bodies at $10^{\circ}C$ for 10 daysshowed that fruiting bodies harvested after soaking in the solution with $2.5{\times}10^{-2}$ dilution level showed the bestfreshness by general test and color changes. In addition, shear force value of L. edodes fruiting bodies measuredby using texture analyzer showed that $2.5{\times}10^{-2}$ dilution level was the best concentration for keeping flesh texture.

This study was conducted to determine the minimum concentration of citrus juice for basal medium and also to search for an additional carbon source for the best production of the gel. A concentrate of citrus fruit juice of 65$^{\circ}$Brix, it was diluted to be used as a basal medium. Static cultivation of Gluconacetobacter hansenii TL-2C for 14 days at 3$0^{\circ}C$ produced the best gel with 7.5$\pm$0.4 mm thickness in the 6-fold diluted citrus Juice concentrate without any additional nutrient. However, the same thickness could be obtained with 60 to 100-fold diluted juice concentrate when refined white sugar was added at appropriate concentrations. Glucose was the most effective sugar for the both of gel and acid production, and optimal concentration of the sugar was 10$^{\circ}$Brix. Ethyl alcohol at 1.0% had synergistic effects in combination with refined sugar and increased the gel thickness up to 15.1 mm which was 1.85 times thicker than that of refined sugar alone. However, acetic acid was not effective. Gel productivity with supplement of ethanol was 172.6$\pm$8.4 g wet/L, and it was approximately equal to 4.7 g of dry gel/L.
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) is an annual crop belonging to Poaceae, and is the fifth-largest crop after maize, wheat, rice, and barley. This study was conducted to establish an efficient seed sterilization method to manage fungal or bacterial infections of germinating sorghum seeds. Two varieties of sorghum seeds (BTx623 and SAP317) were treated with benomyl-thiram and thiophanate-methyl triflumizole which are known to be effective disinfectants for sorghum seeds. For SAP317, the highest germination rate was accomplished with 24-hour treatment of both chemicals at a 200× dilution rate. For BTx623, the highest germination rate was observed after 24-hour treatment at a 200×/400× dilution rate for benomyl-thiram and control/200× for thiophanate-methyl triflumizole. Consequently, the optimal treatment for the seed disinfection in sorghum seeds may be at the dilution rate of 200× or 400× for 24 hours.
The effects of diluents composition on cold storage for Scapharca broughtonii (Schrenck) sperm were examined in the percentage of sperm activity and survival rate. Various diluents of glucose solutions (10 mM Hepes-pH 7.8), 600 mM NaCl, stein solution, Ringer's solution (230 mM NaCl, 8 mM KCl, 2 mM $CaCl_2$, 3.7 mM $MgCl_2$, 0.2 mM $NaHCO_3$, 10 mM Hepes-pH 7.8), 20%, 25% ASW (NaCl 2.7 g + KCl 0.07 g + $CaCl_2$ 0.12 g + $MgCl_2$ 0.46 g + $NaHCO_3$ 0.05 g + distilled water 100 ml) were used to store th sperm at $4^{\circ}C$. The storage effect was evaluated using sperm activity and survival rate. Ringer's solution was found to be better diluents which maintained high activity and survival rate of sperm for a storage period of 7 days. Optimal pH of diluents to store the sperm at $4^{\circ}C$ is 7.5.
