A Study on Development of Activated Carbons from Waste Timbers (폐벌목(廢伐木)을 이용(利用)한 활성탄(活性炭) 개발(開發)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • Using a Pinus koraiensis and Pinus rigida which are normally being discarded in South Korea, optimal conditions of producing activated carbons have been studied to recycle as a higher value-added product. This study consists of two processes, the production process of charcoals from waste timbers by low temperature pyrolysis and the production process of activated carbons from the charcoals by chemical activation reaction. This paper deals with the production process of activated carbons from the charcoals by chemical activation reaction. As an alkali has been generally used as an activating agent, KOH and NaOH which react well with a carbon were used in this study. As a result of the experiments, it is confirmed that activated carbons made with KOH treatment had superior values in physicochemical properties to NaOH, showing that there was no remain of KOH at the surface of the charcoals while there was $3{\sim}4%$ of NaOH remaining after the experiments. Thus, it is concluded that KOH reacted more actively with a charcoal than NaOH. Moreover, it was also found that values in physicochemical properties when using a Pinus koraiensis are superior to the ones when using a Pinus rigida. The optimal mixing ratio of an activating agent to a charcoal was 400 wt.%. To improve the physicochemical properties, activated carbons were washed out by distilled water after neutralization with SM hydrochloric acid solution. When activated carbons were produced from a Pinus koraiensis in this optimal conditions, value of BET surface area was found to be approx. $2400\;m^2/g$.

  • Protein function of ovotransferrin with various pH and temperature, and its antimicrobial characteristics were determined. Foaming ability of ovotransferrin was high in alkali condition (pH 11), then diminished as time follows. In acidic condition (pH 3.0), very little amount of foam was produced and disappeared promptly in 30min. However, neutral condition (pH 7.0) was revealed as the best area for foam production and foam stability of ovotransferrin. Temperature effect on foam stability of ovotransferrin showed that the highest foam was produced at 60℃. Ovotransferrin was shown weak antimicrobial activity against E. Coli, S .typhi, P. aerug and Candida albicans at dose of 12.5mg/ml and 25mg/ml. Anti-microbial effect of ovotransferrin with either lysozyme or albumine on pathogenic bacteria and fungi shows that the most effective dose was 25mg/ml, especially on S. typhi and C. albicans.

코로나 방전을 이용한 하이브리드 사이클론 집진 장치 특성 연구

  • 산업화가 발달됨에 따라 대기 오염 물질은 점차 증가하고 있는 추세에 있고 특히 기름 및 석탄 연소 보일러, 자동차, 제철, 시멘트 플렌트, 소각로 등은 미세 분진을 발생시키는 주원인이 되어 왔다. 최근 대기환경법은 오염 분진의 중량 규제로부터 $10{\mu}m$ 미만의 PM10에서 $2.5{\mu}m$ 미만의 PM2.5의 미세 분진에 대한 규제로 점차 심화되고 있으나, 이러한 미세분진은 고전적인 제거 방법으로는 매우 어려우며 고가의 HEPA 필터를 사용하여야 한다. 한편 코로나 방전을 이용하는 전기 집진은 미세 먼지 제거에 매우 효율적이어서 $1{\mu}m$ 미만의 미세 분지도 99%까지 제거가 가능하다는 장점이 있지만 입자크기가 클 경우에는 효율이 떨어지는 단점이 있다. 한편 사이클론 집진기는 매우 오래전부터 개발되어 사용되어 왔는데 가격이 저렴하고 운영비가 적게 들며 $10{\mu}m$ 이상의 먼지는 99% 이상 제거가 가능하여 산업현장에서 오랜 기간 사용되어 왔지만 입자크기가 $10{\mu}m$ 미만으로 가면 집진율이 급격히 떨어지는 단점을 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 사이클론 집진기의 구조를 기본으로하여 사이클론 집진기 내부에 플라즈마 방전을 설치하여 원심력에 의한 집진과 코로나 방전에 의한 전기 집진을 동시에 수행할 수 있도록 하이브리드 사이클론 집진기를 제작하였다. 제작된 사이클론 집진기는 직경 30 cm 높이 120 cm의 사이클론 구조를 가지고 있으며 1 hp의 터보송풍기를 장착하여 $20m^3$/min 이상의 유량을 처리할 수 있도록 설계 제작되었다. 제작된 하이브리드 사이클론 집진기의 성능을 평가하기 위하여 $10m^3$의 체적을 가지는 테스트 챔버 내부에 사이클론 집진기를 설치하고 향을 태워 미세 먼지를 발생시킨 후 다양한 조건에서 집진 성능을 측정하여 보았다. 미세 먼지의 경우 사이클론을 작동시키지 않아도 테스트 챔버 벽면에 흡착되어 초기에는 급격히 감소하는 경향을 보여주나 일정 시간이 경과한 후에는 매우 느리게 감소하는 현상이 관찰 되었다. 코로나 방전을 하지 않고 오존 파괴기에 활성탄만 충진한 상태에서 사이크론을 작동시킬 경우 지속적으로 천천히 감소하는 경향을 보여주었으며, 코로나 플라즈마를 방전시킨 경우 미세 먼지는 HEPA filter를 장착한 것보다도 조금 빠르게 미세먼지를 제거하였다. 챔버 내부의 미세먼지가 초기 값의 1/10에 도달하는 시간은 코로나 방전 전류가 증가할수록 짧아지는 경향을 보여주었으며 최적 조건에서 100초 이내에 90% 이상 제거가 가능하였다. 하이브리드 사이클론 집진기는 집진 뿐 만 아리라 VOC 성분도 분해가 가능하여 유해물질을 제거하는 능력이 있다. 유해 가스 제거 능력을 실험하기 위하여 분진제거 실험에 사용된 챔버 안에 아세톤을 증발시켜 50 ppm이 되도록 한 후 다양한 조건에서 유해물질 제거 실험을 수행하였다. 미세먼지와는 달리 장비를 작동하지 않을 경우 매우 느리게 아세톤 농도가 감소하였다. 이는 미세 먼지와는 달리 흡착이 발생하지 않고, 측정 챔버 자체가 완전한 밀폐가 이루어지지 않아 자연적으로 조금씩 외부로 누출되기 때문으로 판단된다. 코로나 플라즈마만 방전시켰을 경우 초기 농도의 80%가 제거되는데 걸리는 시간은 약 28분 정도로 코로나 플라즈마가 VOC 제거에 효과가 있음은 확인하였으나 제거율이 그리 높지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 한편 오존 파괴를 위해 활성탄으로 충진 된 오존파괴기를 통과시킨 경우는 약 12분 경과 후 80%가 제거됨을 확인할 수 있었으나 그 이후에는 VOC의 감소가 매우 느리게 진행됨을 알 수 있었다. 한편 활성탄 대신 $MnO_2$ 복합촉매로 충진 된 오존파괴기를 통과한 경우 약 3분 정도 경과 후 80%의 아세톤이 제거됨을 관찰할 수 있었으며 코로나 플라즈마를 작동시키면서 $MnO_2$ 복합촉매로 충진 된 오존파괴기를 통과시킨 경우 약 2분 정도 경과 80% 이상의 아세톤이 제거되어 코로나 플라즈마와 복합촉매를 사용할 경우 VOC 성분이 효과적으로 제거됨을 알 수 있었다.

  • 최근에 charge trap flash (CTF) 기술은 절연막에 전하를 트랩과 디트랩 시킬 때 인접한 셀 간의 간섭현상을 최소화하여 오동작을 줄일 수 있으며 낸드 플래시 메모리 소자에 적용되고 있다. 낸드 플래시 메모리는 고집적화, 대용량화와 비휘발성 등의 장점으로 인해 핸드폰, USB, MP3와 컴퓨터 등에 이용되고 있다. 기존의 실리콘 기반의 플래시 메모리 소자는 좁은 밴드갭으로 인해 투명하지 않고 고온에서의 공정이 요구되는 문제점이 있다. 따라서, 이러한 문제점을 개선하기 위해 실리콘의 대체 물질로 산화물 반도체 기반의 플래시 메모리 소자들이 연구되고 있다. 산화물 반도체 기반의 플래시 메모리 소자는 넓은 밴드갭으로 인한 투명성을 가지고 있으며 저온에서 공정이 가능하여 투명하고 유연한 기판에 적용이 가능하다. 다양한 산화물 반도체 중에서 비정질 In-Ga-Zn-O (a-IGZO)는 비정질임에도 불구하고 우수한 전기적인 특성과 화학적 안정성을 갖기 때문에 많은 관심을 받고 있다. 플래시 메모리의 고집적화가 요구되면서 절연막에 high-k 물질을 atomic layer deposition (ALD) 방법으로 적용하고 있다. ALD 방법을 이용하면 우수한 계면 흡착력과 균일도를 가지는 박막을 정확한 두께로 형성할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 또한, high-k 물질을 절연막에 적용하면 높은 유전율로 인해 equivalent oxide thickness (EOT)를 줄일 수 있다. 특히, HfOx와 AlOx가 각각 trap layer와 blocking layer로 적용되면 program/erase 동작 속도를 증가시킬 수 있으며 넓은 밴드갭으로 인해 전하손실을 크게 줄일 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 ALD 방법으로 AlOx와 HfOx를 게이트 절연막으로 적용한 a-IGZO 기반의 thin-film transistor (TFT) 플래시 메모리 소자를 제작하여 메모리 특성을 평가하였다. 제작 방법으로는, p-Si 기판 위에 열성장을 통한 100 nm 두께의 SiO2를 형성한 뒤, 채널 형성을 위해 RF sputter를 이용하여 70 nm 두께의 a-IGZO를 증착하였다. 이후에 소스와 드레인 전극에는 150 nm 두께의 In-Sn-O (ITO)를 RF sputter를 이용하여 증착하였고, ALD 방법을 이용하여 tunnel layer에 AlOx 5 nm, trap layer에 HfOx 20 nm, blocking layer에 AlOx 30 nm를 증착하였다. 최종적으로, 상부 게이트 전극을 형성하기 위해 electron beam evaporator를 이용하여 platinum (Pt) 150 nm를 증착하였고, 계면 결함을 최소화하기 위해 퍼니스에서 질소 가스 분위기, $400^{\circ}C$, 30 분의 조건으로 열처리를 했다. 측정 결과, 103 번의 program/erase를 반복한 endurance와 104 초 동안의 retention 측정으로부터 큰 열화 없이 메모리 특성이 유지되는 것을 확인하였다. 결과적으로, high-k 물질과 산화물 반도체는 고성능과 고집적화가 요구되는 향후 플래시 메모리의 핵심적인 물질이 될 것으로 기대된다.

Study on New Extraction Method of Microcystins from Cyanobacteria (남조류로부터 마이크로시스틴을 추출하는 새로운 추출법 연구)

  • A new analytical method of cyanobacterial toxins, i, e, microcysins was deveeloped using supercritical fluid extraction(SFE). The microcystins mcluded in the study are sparsely soluble in neat supercritical fluid CO$_2$ However, the microcystins were successfully extracted with a temary mixture(90% CO$_2$,9.0% methanol 1.0% water) at 40$^{\circ}$C and 250 atm. The SFE method developed in this study has several advantages over solid-phase extraction(SPE) sample preparation for the analysis of microcystins. Sample handling steps are minimized thus reducing possible losses of analytes and saving analysis time. No clean-up steps are employed in this SFE method. Althouhgh many methods have been described for microcystim RR and LR, the method using solid-phase extraction with ODS cartridges is the most commonly used. However, the adsorbing power of ODS caridges for microcystins is weak, so we have attempted to use a more polar CN cartridge, to increase the adsorbing power for microcystins. Lyophilized cells(100mg) were wxtracted with 5% (v/v) acetic acid. The extract was centrifuged and then the supernatant was applied to a CN cartridge. The cartridge which contained microcystins was rinsed with 5 ml of water and 5 ml of 0.5 M acetic acid. followed by 5 ml of 5% acetonitrile in water , and were determined by HPLC. Better recoveries and chromatogram were observed than with ODS cartridge.

Soil-Water Partition Coefficients for Cadmium in Some Korean Soils (우리나라 일부 토양에 대한 카드뮴의 토양-물 분배계수)

  • Distribution coefficient ($K_d$) is an universal parameter estimating cadmium partition for a soil-water-crop system in agricultural lands. This study was performed to find some factors affecting soil-water partition coefficients for cadmium in some Korean soils. The distribution coefficients ($K_d$) of cadmium for the 15 series of agricultural soils were measured at quasi-steady state in the pH ranges from 2 to 11. The adsorption data of the selected soils showed a linear relationship between log $K_d$ and pH, which was well agreed with theoretically expected results ; $log\;K_d=0.6339pH+0.5532(r^2=0.70^{**})$. Normalization of the partition coefficients were performed in a range of pH 3.5 ~ 8.5 to minimize adverse effects of Al dissolution, cationic competition, and organic matter dissolution. The $K_d$-om, partition coefficients normalized for organic matter, improved this linearity to the pH of soils. The values of $K_d$-om measured from the field samples were significantly correlated with those of $K_d$ predicted from the sorption-edge experimental data ($r^2=0.68^{**}$).

The effects of Germanium biotite on the adsorptive and inhibition of growth abilities against E. coli and Salmonella spp. in vitro (게르마늄 흑운모의 시험관 내에서의 E. coli와 Salmonella spp.에 대한 흡착력 및 성장 억제 효능 평가)

  • Germanium biotite, a natural mineral, has been used as a feed supplement to reinforce innate immune ability. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of germanium biotite on the adsorptive and inhibition of growth abilities against Escherichia (E.) coli and Salmonella spp. in vitro. Two strains of enterotoxigenic E. coli and four strains of two Salmonella serotypes (Salmonella Derby and Salmonella Typhimurium), major bacterial diarrheal pathogens, were used for this experiment. The absorptive ability of germanium biotite against most Salmonella used in present experiment was observed weakly. The germanium biotite, however, showed significant effect of bacterial growth inhibition in most experiment bacteria. These results suggest that the use of the germanium biotite as feed supplement could alleviate diarrhea following inhibition of bacteria growth. It is also presumed that antibiotics usage for farm animals, considered as causes of antibiotic residue in meat and emerging antibiotic resistance, could be reduced through the use of germanium biotite as a feed supplement, in place of antibiotics used for the prevention of diarrhea.

Removal of As(III) by Pilot-Scale Filtration System Separately Packed with Iron-Coated Sand and Manganese-Coated Sand (철 및 망간코팅사를 분리 충진시킨 파일럿 여과시스템에 의한 3가 비소 제거)

  • Removal efficiency of As(III) was investigated with a pilot-scale filtration system packed with an equal amount(each 21.5 kg) of manganese-coated sand(MCS) in the bottom and iron-coated sand(ICS) in the top. Height and diameter of the used column was 200 cm and 15 cm, respectively. The As(III) solution was introduced into the bottom of the filtration system with a peristaltic pump at a speed of $5{\times}10^{-3}$ cm/s over 148 days. Breakthrough of total arsenic in the mid-sampling position(end of the MCS bed) and final-sampling position(end of the ICS bed) was started after 18 and 44 days, respectively, and then showed a complete breakthrough after 148 days. Although the breakthrough of total arsenic in the mid-sampling position was started after 18 days, the concentration of As(III) in this effluent was below 50 ppb up to 61 days. This result indicates that MCS has a sufficient oxidizing capacity to As(III) and can oxidize 92 mg of As(III) with 1 kg of MCS up to 61 days. When a complete breakthrough of total arsenic occurred, the removed total arsenic by MCS was calculated as 79.0 mg with 1 kg MCS. As variation of head loss is small at each sampling position over the entire reaction time, it was possible to operate the filtration system with ICS and MCS for a long time without a significant head loss.

Effect of Iron Component in Filature Water on the Coloring of Raw Silk (제사용수 중 철성분이 생사 색택에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was to find out the exact amount of iron component in filature water affecting or the coloring and iron component content in the raw silk after the quantitative analysis of iron component in the filature water, cocoon bave and raw silk. 1. In Korea the extent of iron component in filature water is 0.01-0.77 PPM, and the average amount is 0.23 PPM. 2. The sample water from wells contains more than twice as much iron component as the river water. 3. The iron component content in the cocoon bave (Fe$_2$O$_3$ 0.0096%) and that in the raw silk (Fe$_2$O$_3$ 0.0084%) are similar. But it should be noticed that while the ash content in cocoon bave is twice as much as raw silk, the same amount of ash in raw silk has twice as much iron component as the cocoon bave. 4. The amount of iron component in filature water has great effect on the resolution and absorption of iron component contained in the raw silk during cooking and reeling. That is, when the amount of iron component is small, the rate of iron component resolution from the cocoon bave increases and finally the raw silk comes to contain much less iron component than the cocoon bave, but when the iron component amount is over 0.40 PPM, the raw silk happens to contain more iron component than the cocoon bave. 5. The iron component in filature water makes the raw silk grayish and the more the iron component, the grayer the raw silk. 6. While even very small amount of iron component can affect the depth of raw silk, relatively large amount of Mn component does not have so much influence on the coloring.

Anaesthetic Effects of Lidocaine-HCl as an Anaesthetic on the Webfoot Octopus, Octopus ocellatus (주꾸미, Octopus ocellatus에 대한 마취제 염산리도카인의 마취효과)

  • After the juvenile octopus individuals being discharged, it is hard to separately capture them because they attach strongly to the wall of the aquarium by the suckers on the arms. Therefore, anaesthetics (MS-222 or lidocaine-HCl) are usually used for capture from attachment. The anaesthetized time of the octopus by lidocaine-HCl was more faster 1.6 to 4.5 times under 200 ppm and 6.0 to 6.5 times in 300 to 500 ppm than those in MS-222. In the anaesthetized and recovery rates (%) by the exposed time, the juvenile octopuses were anesthetized by lower concentrations of lidocaine-HCl within the short time, and rapidly recovered from anesthesia. In the secondary anesthesia of the juvenile octopuses exposed with lidocaine-HCl by the elapsed time after the primary anesthesia, the anesthetized time was later in case of lower concentrations and long elapsed times, However, the anesthetized time was faster when their concentrations were higher and the elapsed time after anesthesia were shorter. Recovery from the secondary anesthesia was faster when the elapsed time was long in lower concentration, and was later when the elapsed time was shorter. In case of Octopus ocellatus, anaesthetic effects by lidocaine-HCl concentrations were better than those of MS-222. Doses of lidocaine-HCl and critical time for works at the indoor laboratory were proper in concentration of 100 ppm within 15 min.
