  • This study was conducted to examine the feeding effect of Halyomorpha halys ($St{\aa}l$) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) on the fruit drop and decay rate of Mandarin citrus fruits (Citrus unshiu). The feeding of H. halys before fruit coloring caused a severe fruit drop, while the feeding after fruit coloring induced a low level of fruit drop. However, the feeding of H. halys before or after fruit coloring did not induce significant fruit decay during cold storage. The results are expected to be useful in managing H. hlays of late season mandarine, because citrus farmers follow calendar spray to prevent fruit drop and fruit decay.

  • Rice stripe virus (RSV) has been the main viral disease of rice plant in western coastal region of Korea since 2000. The control of the vector insect, small brown planthopper (Laodelphax striatellus), is the most effective management method of the persistently-transmitted viral disease. Thus, ecological study between RSV and the vector insect was needed and investigated in order to make effective control plan, especially about study on the feeding and transmission of the virus by the vector insect. Each larval stage of vector insect differed in vector competence; larvae over 4th stage were shown as higher transmission after feeding on RSV-infected rice plant. These 4th and 5th larvae had higher transmission rates, 69.2% and 67.9% respectively, than 44.8% of the adult stage. The vector competence, however, was changed according to temperature; the highest transmission rate was 93.3% on $30^{\circ}C$ in comparison to 70.6% on $25^{\circ}C$ and 43.8% on $20^{\circ}C$.

  • This study was conducted to obtain a basic information on the structural and histological characteristics of Gerbera hybrida Hort. leaf injured by american serpentine leafminer (ASL), Liriomyza trifolii, by using light and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Based on the anatomical observation of leaf blade injured by L. trifolii, the injury process could be divided into three stages. In the initial stage, the punctured tiny holes where ASL layed eggs after suction in the upperside of leaf were observed in the palisade parenchyma. In the middle stage, the hatched larvae made mines in the palisade parenchyma only. In the final stage, the mature larvae grew up making the mines bigger, and just before going out from the epidermis, it injured the inside of leaf containing one layer palisade parenchyma and two layers of spongy parenchyma.

  • Flying behavior during nighttime and control methods of fruit sucking pests were investigated in yuzu (Citrus junos) groves at Koheung area from August to November in 1999. Among the 3 kind of bulbs with different color (white, blue and yellow), white bulb attracted the most number of fruit sucking pests . The 93 percent of the moths was attracted from sunset to 24 o\`clock. Main flying time of hemipteriods in early, mid, and late October were from 22 to 04 o\`clock, sunset to 02 o\`clock and sunset to 24 o\`clock, respectively. Their flying time become earlier as the night temperature declines. For control of fruit sucking pests, attraction liquid traps, light traps (100 W) and illumination light bulb were set up in the yuzu groves (1,000 $\m^2$) from the 1 st October to the 3rd November. Attraction liquid was composed of a raw rice wine 2,000 ml+black sugar 100 g+vinegar 100 ml. When established at 3 sites per 1,000 $\m^2$ orchard, attraction liquid trap reduced the number of sucking spots on yuzu fruit to 64% and its attracting effect maintained for 3 weeks after setting-up. Three light traps per 1,000 m2 which turned on from sunset to 02 o\`clock reduced the number of sucking spots by 60% .

  • This study was carried out to investigate the status of spot damage by fruit piercing pests and the kinds of these pests on yuzu (Citrus junos) fruit in Koheung, the most chief producing district of yuzu fruit in Korea, from ’97 to ’99. The extent of spot damage by fruit piercing pests on yuzu was increasing in recent years. This damage of fruits was severe in the lower canopy than the high one from ground and intercropping groves between yuzu trees had a greater damage to compare with single cropping of yuzu. Spot damage of yuzu fruit was occurred mainly from late September to early November when yuzu fruit is enlarging and coloring yellow. The blackish concave spot on yuzu fruit surface was appeared in 3 days after introduction of Riptortus clavatus into a netted cage containing one yuzu fruit and the diameters of this spot was 8.3 mm. At 10 days after introduction, this spot changed into milky-white with 9.2 mm diameters. One concave spot has contained oil cells by 17.7 and its external appearances has unchanged until harvest. The kinds of piercing pests of yuzu fruit were investigated with 3 orders, 16 families and 37 species. These pests were classified by 11 species of bugs, 5 species of hoppers and 21 species of moths. Among them, dominant species were Physopelta gutta, Halyamorpha halys, Empoasca vitis, Aedia leucomelas, Agrotis tokionis, etc. Macroglossum bombylans and Acherontia s쇼x are newly confirmed species as the fruit piercing moths in Korea.

  • After treatment with imidacloprid, there were clear differences in the time to the first reaction of Myzus persicae among the concentrations treated. The time taken for the proboscis of the aphids to penetrate, during the recording plants increased as the imidacloprid concentration increased. Imidacloprid concentration inflow into a leaf was investigated using high-performance liquid chromatography, and the residues of the imidacloprid varied slightly with the different concentrations treated. However, the inflow rates of this insecticide into a leaf increased as the dipping times increased. Furthermore, it was shown that there was no relationship in inflow concentration between the concentrations and times of treatment. However, the concentration in the leaf differed according to the dipping time. Judging from the fact that the first reaction behavior against imidacloprid displayed at an inflow concentration of 0.32-0.35 mg/L, we concluded that inflow concentrations causing the first reaction of the aphids to the insecticide were much lower than the concentration treated. The general feeding characteristics of the aphids indicated that xylem and/or phloem feeding behavior continued after a series of probing behaviors and stylet activity during the first 3 h from the start of EPG recording. After 90 min treatment with imidacloprid, feeding behavior over the next 30 min indicated a significant increase in the withdrawal of the stylet from the plant at all treated concentrations. Xylem and/or phloem feeding patterns were significantly decreased during this time. In particular, the proportion of xylem feeding differed according to the concentration of imidacloprid.

  • To determine the population regulation mechanism of the Green rice leafhopper (Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler), the responses of the population increase to initial densities and the effect of host conditions and temperatures during developmental period were investigated. In the out door experiment, the increasing ratio of population density of this pest was reduced as initial density increased and this density-dependent effect was differ in accordance with host condition. Host conditioning through feeding resulted in reduction in numbers of eggs produced and it seemed to be affected by some inhibiting materials secreted by the pest during feeding. though the direct effect of feeding can't be excluded. The population growth was related with population density and host stage. Thus in late planted units, the host stage was favourable to the growth of population at low initial insect density but unfavourable at relatively high initial insect density and in early planted units, vice versa. The temperature during developmental stages definitely affected the determination of sex ratio of adult population and reduced numbers of eggs produced. The most favourable temperature to the population increase was $290^{\circ}C$, and at high temperature, $33^{\circ}C$, severe reduction of fecundity was shown ana it seemed to be caused by the simple reduction in numbers of eggs produced.

  • For the comparison of feeding behavior of Nilaparvata lugens among different rice varieties, electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique was used. Ten rice varieties were selected from national-widely recommended rice varieties cultivating in Chungnam province. The correlation between feeding duration and honeydew amount excreted was investigated, and the types of EPG pattern were analyzed among rice varieties. The EPG patterns divided into 6 types according to electrical specific feature, respectively. Type 1 pattern was a searching feeding sites, resting or wandering on a rice plant. Type 2 pattern was appeared when the insect untaken from phloem sieve element. Type 3 pattern was observed when the insect piercing into the rice plant. Type 4 pattern was observed when the insect salivating in rice plant. Type 5 pattern was observed when the insect ingesting from the xylem. Type 6 pattern was observed when the stylet moving in cell. Feeding duration time on Gum-nam was significantly shorter than Dong-jin, Dae-ahn, Dong-ahn, Dae-san. Also, on Gun-nam, it was shown that the brown planthopper did not penetrate the cuticle for a long time. The total number of excreted honeydew droplets by the brown planthopper was the greatest in Dong-jin variety and the least in Gum-nam variety. In proportion to phloem feeding time, the number of honeydew droplets had been increased. According to the results of EPG patterns and honeydew droplets analysis, N. lugens seems to prefer Dong-jin, Dong-ahn, Dae-san, and Dae-ahn to Gum-nam, Da-san, and Nam-chun rice plant variety.
