  • Most of current building materials are made of organic compounds or at least made with chemical treatments. Though easy to use and comparatively pay less, those materials are generally not enviornmentally sound. VOC is one of harmful effects. On contrary, natural materials such as soil are usually eco-friendly, and environmentally sustainable as well if not treated in autoclaves. Acoustica materials made of such environmentally sound and sustainable could be widely used. It is aimed to prove that soil based materials could be effectively used in acoustical fields rather than the other usual materials. Experiments with various types of soil blocks and soil plaster were performed. It is proved that the soil plaster has better apsorption features than cement plaster. Soil blocks have higher absorption cofficients than soil plaster, due to the thickness, and the absorption characteristics can be controlled by the design of the blocks.

  • Korea's traditional house type, the Hanok, has been the essence of Korean domestic culture for hundreds of years. However, Hanok, have begun to disappear as result of urbanization. Because mud walls are crude and weak in water walls are also easily broken by impact. There are further problems in that construction cost is expensive and takes more time than modern house construction, and that the maintenance of Hanok is more difficult than people sometimes predict. Despite much interest in Hanok construction, there is a lack of in younger generation. Thus seeking new ways of maintaining Korea's traditional housing culture and extending Korean traditional houses is important. This study proposes directions for creating new residential environments for the future generation of Korea. A Dry-wall alternative to the Korean traditional mud wall is particularly needed. Dry-walling, made by sustainable materials such as mud board and wood, can strengthen the advantages and make up for the weaknesses of the Korea traditional mud wall. In this study, both wall types underwent various evaluations in terms of their performance in insulation testing, freezing and thawing testing, impacting testing and weight measuring (the size of material in this experiment was $69cm{\times}105cm$). On all of these tests, findings revealed that the dry-wall alternative performed better than traditional mud wall.

  • Lime was the solidifier mostly used at the fields of construction and civil works in the past. however, the development of Portland cement remarkably reduced the use of it. Recently as the concernment on circumstances gets higher, lime wined attention again as an eco-friendly material and was used at earth-using construction. This study examined the physical and chemical capacity of lime complexes with lime capacity improved, and performed fundamental study on the way to concretize by mixing it with earth. As a result, lime complex pressure strength was lower than cement pressure strength but it showed the possibility that its strength was improved by W/B control. The measurement of XRD after paste formation confirmed a compound generated by the reaction of Ca2+ion and Si, Al, and Fe from pozzolan reaction. A earth wall experiment by using lime complexes and earth showed that the higher, WB or the lower the quantity of unit combined materials, the lower the pressure strength was. The maximum pressure strength was maximum 11MPa when the quantity of unit combined materials was 450. It is because the composed earth particles had a high content of micro powder less than silt, so a lot of combination are demanded to secure fluidity. As a result of peptization experiment, after hardening, the material was not dissolved, which informed of the possibility of use as an outer subsidiary material. If the material is hardened by mold formation method, natural hardening crack appears. Cast expresses smart surface quality and enables to design for multiple purpose. The result shows the possibility of construction of low-story structures by using earth wall made of lime complexes and earth.

  • In this experiment, it was attempted to determine the thermal conductivities of earth block materials which are recently much available for farm building constructions in Korea as lower cost building materials. For this experiment, two kinds of earth block materials were sampled. One of them was pure earth and the other was cementstabilized earth with a ratio of earth to cement by volume, 20 to 1. Cylindrical sections of specimen surrounding a steel pipe(I.D. =1 inch) were used. A resistance neater in the pipe and thermometers for the measurement of radial temperature distribution were installed as shown in Fig. 1 and photograph 1. The heat which flows through the pipe and the sample was produced by passing a current through a resistance wire stretched along the pipe axis. The complete apparatus used in this experiment is schematically shown in Fig. 1.
