Evaluation of Electromagnetic Shielding Performance of SiC and Graphite Mixed Mortar (SiC 및 흑연 혼입 모르타르의 전자파 차폐 성능 평가)

  • Blocking electromagnetic waves on the exterior walls of buildings effectively reduces the intensity of electromagnetic fields in buildings, which leads to attenuation of electromagnetic disturbances, so there is a great interest in developing technologies. In this study, SiC by-products and graphite generated in the semiconductor field were selected and mixed into mortar after pretreatment such as pulverization to evaluate their physical properties and electromagnetic wave shielding performance. Considering the economic efficiency of each shielding material, only 10% volume of the outermost side of the experiment was mixed with each shielding material to evaluate the shielding performance. The shielding performance was predicted when the experiment was manufactured by mixing the shielding material with the entire volume of the experiment using the shielding effect evaluation formula. The results of the experiment showed that the shielding performance was up to 20 dB when SiC grains were mixed with shielding materials, the shielding performance was up to 18 dB when graphite powder was mixed with shielding materials, and the shielding performance was up to 28 dB when SiC powder was mixed with shielding materials, and the shielding performance was close to 30 dB, which is known to have a shielding rate of 99.9%.

  • Vanadium-doped SiC crystals have been grown by using a porous graphite inner crucible filled with vanadium carbide (VC) and by using a porous graphite plate and SiC + VC powders, respectively. Semi-insulating SiC crystals were grown onto the 6H-SiC seed crystals by PVT (Physical Vapor Transport) method. The grown crystals were indicated to be 6H-SiC polytype by XRD. As result of SIMS analysis, vanadium-rich precipitates were observed when the vanadium concentration was relatively higher than the maximum solubility of vanadium ($3-5{\times}10^{17}cm^{-3}$) in vanadium-doped SiC crystals, which resulted in degradation of crystal quality.

Effect of F$e_2$P Addition on Microstructures of Sintered 4600 Steel (4600계 소결강의 조직에 미치는 F$e_2$P첨가의 영향)

  • AISI 4600 Iron powder was mixed with 0~1.0% phosphor as F$e_2$P powder and/or 0~0.8% carbon as graphite powder in rotating mixer. Mixed powder was pressed 800MPa in double-punch mould. Compacts were sintered at 115$0^{\circ}C$for 30 min. in vacuum or mixed hydrogen and nitrogen gas. Sintered compacts were ground and polished, and etched by 2% nital etchant. The microstructure was observed by image analyzer and optical microscope. Density and microhardness were tested by ASTM B3l2 and Microvickers hardness tester. The results obtained were as follows : (1) As the amount of F$e_2$P powder increased, sintered microstructure showed more densified effect and the grain size was larger. (2) The shape of pore was rounded and the number of pore was decreased by F$e_2$P addition. But mean pore size was larger with F$e_2$P content. (3) Simultaneous alloying addition of F$e_2$P and graphite brought about larger grain growth than respective addition. (4) Sintering atmosphere did not affect the microstructure. (5) Hardness of sintered compact increased with phosphrous and carbon content.

Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Al 6061/Gr Composites (Al6061/흑연 복합재료의 미세조직과 기계적 특성)

  • A process has been successfully used to manufacture 6061/Graphite composite material and the Graphite particles are distributed uniformly within the Al alloy matrix. The 6061 powders was mixed with natural Graphite particles in a ball milling blender and cold compacted specimens were extruded into rods 15mm in diameter at 450$^{\circ}C$. The results showed that tensile properties of the composites with Graphite content have been reduced. The emergence of fine microstructures appeared to be related to the graphite volume. Heat-treated composites were found to possess good mechanical properties as compared with those of non heated composites. A model was used that the tensile strength of the composites would be estimated from the theoretical calculation and experimental data.

  • Porous graphite was synthesized by removal of template in HF after pyrolysis of pyrolyzed fuel oil (PFO) at $900^{\circ}C$ using the template of Co or Ni intercalated magadiite. Porous graphite had a plate structure like template, and d-spacing value of about 0.7 nm. The extent of crystallization of porous graphite was dependent on the contents of Co or Ni intercalated in interlayer. It can be explained that the metal such as Co and Ni acts as a promotion catalyst for graphite formation. Porous graphite shows the surface area of $328\sim477 m^2/g$.

  • A technique for determination of proportions of char, coal ana coke is needed in order to monitor pulverized coal injection performance in operating blast furnace. Quantitative X-ray powder diffraction analysis can be applied to the problem providing that structural information on carbonaceous materials, coal, char, coke and their mixture are known. Chars were prepared from a coal at different temperatures (1000∼1400$^{\circ}C$) and were characterised by X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD). The XRD result gave crystallite size (height Lc and diameter, La), aromaticity, number of (002) plane in carbon, and d-spacing. As a result, with increasing heat treat temperature of char, Lc$_{(002)}$, La$_{(10)}$ and number of (002) plane in carbon were increased, and d-spacing and FWHM(Full With Half Maximum) were decreased. Result of prediction of amount of char from the mixtures (char, coke and ore) based on the Lc$_{(002)}$ information of two mixtures (coke and char) showed very close values expected.

The Improvement of Interlaminar Shear Strength for Low Density 2-D Carbon/Carbon Composites by Additives (첨가제에 의한 저밀도 2-D 탄소/탄소 복합재의 층간전단강도 개선)

  • The optimum cure cycle and carbonization condition were selected by the DSC and TGA analysis and green bodies were prepared by the method of hot press molding and then carbonized up to 140$0^{\circ}C$. Additives such as graphite powder, carbon black, milled carbon fiber and carbon fiber mat, which were considered to be effective in improving the interlaminar shear strength, were also added to check their effects on the density and porosity of products. Then, their relations with mechanical properties such as ILSS and flexural strength were investigated. The composites added 9 vol% of graphite powder showed the greatest values of ILSS and flexural strength. Otherwise, in case of adding carbon black, the composites showed the slight improvement of ILSS at its contents of 3 vol% but the flexural strength was decreased. When milled carbon fiber and carbon fiber mat were added, the lack of resin and the heat shrinkage during the carbonization caused the delamination, resulting in decreasing the density, ILSS and flexural strength.

Mechanical Properties of Bulk Graphite using Artificial Graphite Scrap as a Function of Particle Size (입자 크기별 가공부산물로 제조된 벌크흑연의 기계적 성질)

  • Bulk graphite is manufactured using graphite scrap as the filler and phenolic resin as the binder. Graphite scrap, which is the by-product of processing the final graphite product, is pulverized and sieved by particle size. The relationship between the density and porosity is analyzed by measuring the mechanical properties of bulk graphite. The filler materials are sieved into mean particle sizes of 10.62, 23.38, 54.09, 84.29, and 126.64 ㎛. The bulk graphite density using the filler powder with a particle size of 54.09 ㎛ is 1.38 g/㎤, which is the highest value in this study. The compressive strength tends to increase as the bulk graphite density increases. The highest compressive strength of 43.14 MPa is achieved with the 54.09 ㎛ powder. The highest flexural strength of 23.08 MPa is achieved using the 10.62 ㎛ powder, having the smallest average particle size. The compressive strength is affected by the density of bulk graphite, and the flexural strength is affected by the filler particle size of bulk graphite.

Changes in Mechanical and Electrical Properties as a Function of Unidirectional Pressure Changes in Preforming While Isostatic Pressing for Graphite Block Fabrication (흑연블록 제조를 위한 등압성형 시 일축가압 예비성형의 압력변화에 따른 기계적 및 전기적 특성 변화)

  • In this study, a graphite block is fabricated using artificial graphite processing byproduct and phenolic resin as raw materials. Mechanical and electrical property changes are confirmed due to the preforming method. After fabricating preforms at 50, 100, and 150 MPa, CIP molding at 150 MPa is followed by heat treatment to prepare a graphite block. 150UP-CIP shows a 12.9% reduction in porosity compared with the 150 MPa preform. As the porosity is decreased, the bulk density, flexural strength, and shore hardness are increased by 14.9%, 102.4%, and 13.7%, respectively; and the deviation of density and electrical resistivity are decreased by 51.9% and 34.1%, respectively. Therefore, as the preforming pressure increases, the porosity decreases, and the electrical and mechanical properties improve.

Improvement of Oxidation Resistance of Gray Cast Iron with Thermal Sprayed Silicon Coating by Laser Surface Alloying

  • 회주철 모재의 표면에 감압 플라즈마 용사법으로 실리콘 분말을 피복시킨 후 $CO_2$ 레이저를 이용하는 표면 합금화로 고온 내스케일성이 향상된 표면 개질층을 제조하였다. 실리콘의 표면 합금층에는 응집상의 흑연(chunky graphite)이 $Fe_5Si_3$로 구성된 망상의 화합물 기지속에 정출하는 조직특성을 보였다. 대기 분위기에서 18.0ks동안 열중량측정(TG)한 결과 실리콘 표면 합금층의 무게 증가율은 회주철 모재에 비하여 923K에서는 약 1/3, 1098K에서는 약 1/10을 나타내었다. 그리고 1098K에서 18.0ks동안 유지시킨 주철모재 시편에서 원래의 모재표면을 기준으로 다공성의 외부스케일과 편상흑연을 따라 생성된 내부스케일로 구성된 두께 $60{\sim}70\;{\mu}m$의 두꺼운 산화스케일이 생성되었으나, 실리콘의 표면 합금층에서는 두께 $3{\sim}5\;{\mu}m$의 치밀한 외부 산화스케일만이 생성되었다. 실리콘 합금층의 단면 미소경도값은 MHV $300{\sim}1100$으로 그 변동폭이 심하였으나, 진공분위기에서 열처리(1223K, 18.0ks)한 경우 미소경도값의 편차는 MHV $300{\sim}500$으로 개선되었다.
